Chapter 4 Why I Left My Old Home and What I Have Accomplished in America Aaron Domnitz (Aba Beitani) b. 1884,Romanovo, Belarus To U.S.: 1906;settled in Baltimore, Md. The autobiography of Aaron Domnitz is the purest example of the maskil type in this collection. A deeply pious and zealous student of Gemara as a child and youth, he was drawn to the study of Hebrew literature and secular subjects as a yeshiva student. Influenced by the revolutionary fervor sur- rounding him, Domnitz romanticized workers and industrial labor but lasted only a brief time in the “shop” when he arrived in the United States. Domnitz describes his experiences as a member of the literary and intellectual circle known as “Di Yunge,” the Young Ones, while living in the Bronx in the first decades of the twentieth century. An ideal informant, the writer has a knack for keen observation, evoking his surroundings with a sharp eye and close detail, always placing the phenomena he describes vividly in their historical contexts. Introduction I want to make use of the autobiographical form, so I will skip many, many things that have occurred in my life. I will record only those details of my childhood that have in my consciousness some connection with my later urge to travel somewhere. Ruminating over my past has renewed in my memory several details that at one time made a strong impression on me, and I portray them here. These too would be interesting for a histo- rian who might sometime ruminate over old documents and want to form 124 Why I Left My Old Home and What I Have Accomplished in America 125 a complete picture of the people who took part in the great Jewish immi- gration at the beginning of the century. -

He swam against the current of the philosophical exposition of his day. He was bold enough to oppose the speculative reasoning of Aristotle, the man who held nearly all the philosophers in his grip during so many centuries; and, above all, he dared to criticize the introduction of Aristotelian views into the religious philosophy of his own people, even though these views were dressed in Jewish garb by the master hand of Maimonides. The current passed him by; it could not overwhelm him. In the following pages Dr. Meyer Waxman has given us a detailed and a very interesting exposition of Crescas's philosophic system; and he has added to this a comparison of Crescas's views, not only with those of Maimonides, but also with those of Spinoza. We have thus lined up for us the three greatest minds that speculative Jewish theology produced during the Middle Ages; and the means are afforded us to estimate the value of their dip into the Unknown. -

DIRECTORIES AND LISTS JEWISH NATIONAL ORGANIZATIONS. Introduction The record of Jewish organizations, their purposes, mem- bership, and publications, reveals a colorful pattern of Jewish affiliation. That the Jews of the United States, like other Americans, are "joiners" is evident from the long list that follows, including 268 organizations, exclusive of numerous local associations. The national organizations report a total membership of approximately 2,000,000. This figure, how- ever, includes numerous cases of multiple membership, while some organizations do not list their membership. The organizations may be classified into six major cate- gories: 1) religious (exclusive of congregational member- ship), 2) fraternal, including Landsmannschaften, 3) phil- anthropic and welfare, 4) Zionist and pro-Palestine, 5) educational and cultural, 6) miscellaneous (defense, professional, war veterans, etc.). Grouping the organizations according to their year of formation reveals that all but fifteen have been founded during the past fifty years and that a larger number of new organizations have been formed during the past five years than in any previous five-year period, forty seven new organi- zations having been established since 1940. RICHARD J. H. GOTTHEIL 1862-1936 RICHARD J. H. GOTTHEIL A Biographical Sketch By Louis I. NEWMAN In April, 1925, Professor Richard James Horatio Gottheil was sent by Columbia University as delegate to the dedica- tion of the Hebrew University on Mount Scopus in Jeru- salem. He bore with him a message from Dr. Nicholas Murray Butler, President of Columbia. After reading this in the Latin in which it was written, Professor Gottheil proceeded to translate it into Hebrew. No incident in his long career was a more accurate symbol of the interests of the great Semitics scholar and Jewish communal leader who passed away in New York City, May 22, 1936. Richard Gottheil was born at Manchester, England, October 13, 1862, his mother being Rosalie Wollman, his father, the distinguished Rabbi Gustav Gottheil, then minister of the Manchester Congregation of British Jews. In "The Life of Gustav Gottheil: Memoir of a Priest in Israel" (The Bayard Press, 1936), Professor Gottheil has given many informative details regarding his own child- hood and youth. He received his early education at Chorl- ton High School, England, and, on his father's removal to this country in 1873 to become Rabbi of Temple Emanu-El, New York City, he continued his studies at Columbia Grammar School, which, many years later, was destined to come under the leadership of George Alexander Kohut, whose tribute to Professor Gottheil in the Columbia Uni- versity Quarterly* is one of the authoritative sources of our knowledge regarding him. In 1881, he was awarded an A. B. degree at Columbia College, the institution with which his name was to be linked for one year less than half a century. -

ABSTRACT The Dual Role of Rabbi Zvi Hirsch Chajes: Traditionalist and Maskil Bruria Hutner David The name of Rabbi Zvi Hirsch Chajes (1805-1856) is familiar to those well versed in the history of Jewish culture, to students of the Talmud as well as to those who study the origins of the haskalah-- movement. Yet very few of these very same. people would be able to offer a compre- hensive intellzctual or personal portrait of this colorful figure. This study undertakes a careful investigation of his writings and activities with the aim of identifying elements in his habit of mind. In an era of cultural conflict between the two worlds of traditional culture and a more secular haskalah approach, he represent^-: a rare oddity: a prominent rabbi in the Galician community of Zolkiew partaking, socially and intel- lectually, of the world of haskalaQ. How successful was he Fzl synthesizing a harmonious blend of both worlds? It is the central thesis of this dissertation that in both thought and deed, 1. ,.vdbi Chajes showed a tendency to vacillate be- tween the two worlds. Although he identified with time- honored evaluations of Jewish culture, his views are often characterized by a subtle dualism so that he may be classi- fied as the traditionalist amidst maski'lim and at the same time as the maskil anong traditionalists. -
Jewish National Organizations in the United States
JEWISH NATIONAL ORGANIZATIONS IN THE UNITED STATES In the following list information is given respecting those Jewish organizations which have a national scope as distinguished from societies of a local character which are listed in the Directory of Local Jewish Organizations, pp. 330-583. Seventy-six bodies are listed below. Although these organizations vary widely in their functions, they may be classified into ten broad groups. Of course, there are several organizations which, owing to their manifold aims and purposes, could be placed into more than one class, but these were grouped in accordance with their most prominent activity. In the international group are such bodies as the American Jewish Committee, the American Jewish Congress, and the organizations interested in the welfare of the Jews of Roumania; the Zionist organizations have been grouped separately. In the educational class are the Council of Young Men's Hebrew and Kindred Associations, the Intercollegiate Menorah Association, the Jewish Chautauqua Society, and others of a similar character. The three Theological Seminaries and the Dropsie College for Hebrew and Cognate Learning are given sepa- rately. As research institutions are classed the American Jewish His- torical Society, the Bureau of Jewish Social Research, and the Jewish Academicians of America. Professional associations include the various rabbinical societies and the National Conference of Jewish Social Service. The Religious Unions include the congregational federations and their national auxiliaries. No explanation of the other groups is necessary. The First English Edition of the Talmud Revisited
Partnership Minyanim and More Partnership Minyanim and More Marc B. Shapiro 1. A few people have wanted me to comment on the recent debate between Rabbis Barry Freundel and Zev Farber about the so- called Partnership Minyanim in which women lead Kabbalat Shabbat. See here. The issue goes back to R. Freundel’s article in Tradition 44:2 (2011) on the topic. I was planning to respond to this article when it first appeared, and even wrote some pages, but I never completed the piece. Since the issue has once again surfaced, now is a good time to deal with it. Some of what I will say was also stated by an anonymous commenter on the Torah Musings blog, but both R. Zev Farber and Lazer Kaganovitch can testify that I sent them these points before the commenter posted anything, so I see no reason not to record my thoughts. (I should also note that this anonymous commenter, while pointing out errors and misreadings by R. Freundel, did not show proper respect in recording his criticisms.) In his article, R. Freundel argues against the Partnership Minyanim with an original approach. Rather than summarize his viewpoint in my own words, this quotation sets forth his thesis, which the article attempts to prove: In those communities which do not employ a Hazan for Kabbalat Shabbat, that lack would indicate that they view this liturgy as neither mandatory nor communal. Nonetheless, putting a woman (and maybe a child) into the role of Hazan would still be problematic. Adding a Hazan makes the prayer mandatory and communal but women and possibly children cannot lead a mandatory communal prayer.
