Mr Martin Gill General Manager Meander Valley Council PO Box 102 WESTBURY TAS 7303

Dear Mr Gill

Representation - Draft Meander Valley Local Provisions Schedule

Thank you for the opportunity to make a representation on the Draft Meander Valley Local Provisions Schedule (LPS).

SES supports the improvements in the draft flood prone hazard areas overlay mapping for the , and .

I note that the draft flood prone hazard areas overlay map does not incorporate a number of defined watercourses adjacent to proposed village and rural living zones, including;  Black Sugarloaf Creek and Reids Creek adjoining the proposed rural living zone at Birralee;  Jackeys Creek and other water courses adjoining the proposed rural living zone at Jackeys Marsh;  adjoining the proposed rural living zone at Liffey;  Liffey River adjoining the proposed rural living zone south of Carrick;  Limestone Creek adjoining the proposed village and rural living zones at ;  Meander River adjoining the proposed village zone at Meander;  Mersey River at Liena;  Mersey River adjoining the proposed rural living zone at Kimberly upstream of 1171 Railton Rd;  Mersey River adjoining the rural living zone at Weegena; and  Western Creek adjoining the proposed rural living zone at Western Creek.

I am interested in understanding how the Meander Valley Council will manage the risk of flooding in these and other areas without flood prone hazard areas overlay mapping, and how it has considered flooding in the zoning of land.

The SES Tasmanian Flood Mapping Project will deliver a statewide comprehensive and consistent flood map, and detailed local flood maps in priority communities by 2021. A primary purpose of the maps is to inform the development of flood prone hazard areas overlay maps by planning authorities with advice from SES. I encourage Meander Valley Council to participate in this project so that future updates to the flood prone hazard areas overlay can be informed by the best available flood hazard and risk mapping.

If you have any questions please contact Chris Irvine, Manager – Flood Policy Unit via email on [email protected] or via telephone on 03 6173 2718.

Yours sincerely

ANDREW LEA ESM Director
