Ulverstone War Memorials Reibey St, Ulverstone Ulverstone is well known for its unique memorial parks with many reunions and services held each year in Ulverstone. The Shrine of Remembrance is the most prominent memorial in Ulverstone built in 1952.

10 www.cradlecountry.com.au Big Penguin Main Rd, Penguin The Big Penguin, standing a proud 3metres tall on the foreshore, was erected to commemorate the town’s centenary in 1975. It has become one of the most photographed landmarks in Tasmania.

Gunns Plains Cave Gunns Plains Rd, Gunns Plains Ph: 6429 1388 It’s a magical underground world, one of the best examples of its type, the cave is home to some of the largest limestone shawl formations in the Southern Hemisphere and features a subterranean stream, stalactites, stalagmites and glittering glow-worm displays. Tours are conducted daily at 10am, 11am, 12 noon, 1.30pm, 2.30pm and 3.30pm

Leven Canyon 42kms south of Ulverstone, Loongana Rd, Loongana Come to the edge of a 250 metre ravine that’s part of a wildlife corridor from the coast to Cradle Mountain. The views from the lookout above the canyon are inspiring. The ground shakes at the base when the Leven River thunders through in flood. See just how much force mother nature has needed to carve the canyon, on a canyon floor walk. Take a peaceful forest walk in the reserve, stroll through towering manferns, or enjoy an easygoing picnic or barbecue.

Penguin Viewing

Cradle Mountain, Dove Lake Parks passes are required for all Tasmanian National Parks - available at Devonport, Latrobe or Sheffield Visitor Information Centres. Summer Ranger programs run December to February. Cradle Mountain World Heritage Area Cradle Mountain Rd (C132) Cradle Visitor Centre Ph: 6492 1133 A one-hour drive south-west of Sheffield. The jagged contours of Cradle Mountain are a Tasmanian icon. This National Park is a pristine landscape of alpine heath and buttongrass plains, ancient lakes and streams, and inspiring rainforest. During September to May a shuttle bus service from the park entry to Dove Lake runs regularly from early morning to dusk. Timetables are available at businesses and information points in Cradle Valley. There are numerous short, half-day and full-day walks located close to the Visitor Information services and accommodation at Pencil Pine Creek. The has an access point in this national park, but is a multi-day walk for prepared and experienced walkers only. Cradle Mountain National Park Cradle Valley is an alpine environment, so be prepared - weather can change suddenly at any time of the year.

Rich in both Aboriginal and European heritage, the park has an abundance of mammal and bird life. For the best chance to catch a glimpse of Tasmanian marsupials, especially wombats, wallabies and Forester kangaroos, stay overnight at powered or unpowered sites which are available for a fee. There are numerous walking tracks to cater for all levels of fitness. Swimming, fishing and bird watching are also popular activities within the park. Visit the great Interpretation Centre for parks passes and local knowledge on flora and fauna.

Warrawee Forest Reserve 4 kms on Hamilton St, Latrobe Bookings Ph: 6421 4699 ‘Warrawee’’ is aboriginal for plenty. This nature reserve offers a great picnic area, walking tracks and fishing. Guided tours to view platypus.

Sykes Sanctuary Sunnyside Rd, Railton This tranquil bush retreat was once home to hermit Norman Sykes. Today it is an ideal spot to stretch legs, see native birds, or share a picnic lunch. Be challenged by the curious marble edicts created by Norman’s son, Ian.

Leven Canyon Loongana Rd, Loongana A spectacular 250 metre-deep ravine 41 kilometres south of Ulverstone, the Leven Canyon is a must-see for any visitor. From a well-equipped picnic area, follow the rainforest walk to the cliff-face viewing platform and marvel at the breathtaking scenery.

Three Sisters - Goat Island Nature Reserves Penguin Rd, Ulverstone The small off-shore islands comprising the Three Sisters are sanctuaries to a variety of bird life. Goat Island, to their east, is accessible at low tide - but take care not to get stranded. Fish, explore or just observe the bird and marine life.

Ferndene Forest Reserve Ironcliffe Rd, Penguin From the well-equipped picnic area there is a short walk up along the stream through beautiful shady manferns and tall Eucalypt forest to an historic mining area and Thorsby’s Tunnel. This Reserve is the only one in Tasmania in which Blechnum cartilagineum, an extremely rare fern species, is protected.

Kelcey Tier Nature Walk

Kelcey Tier Nature Walk Accessed via the top end of Durkins Rd, off Stony Rise Rd, Devonport 160 hectares of native bushland which abounds with many varieties of birds, skinks and wildflowers. Discover the sculpture ‘Preeatenna’, which means ‘lizard’ in the Tasmanian Aboriginal language, reinforcing the important Aboriginal cultural links to the area. Read the message on the Peace Pole, and take in the superb views of Devonport and the Mersey River Estuary. The circuit walk is 3.6 kilometres and takes 1.5 to 2 hours.

Devonport City Walk Beginning in the city centre this walk follows the Mersey River foreshore where you will pass many interesting sculptures and the viewing platform, which is a great vantage point for photographing boats and ships as they enter and leave the river. Continue on to the Lighthouse at the ‘Bluff’ headland where you can see the blowhole and aboriginal rock carvings. The walk then continues on to Coles Beach before taking you into the Don Bushland Reserve which follows the Don River and concludes at the Don River Railway. The walk is approximately 9 kilometres and the majority is on flat, sealed pathways. Along the way are many interesting historical and cultural features, as well as lookouts offering spectacular coastal and river views. Enjoy the entire walk or just one of its unique sections.

Henry Somerset Railton Rd, Latrobe October to December see one of the best gene banks of orchids with 42 types of small to medium orchids in this 39-hectare reserve. Keep to the defined walking tracks.

Formerly the wharf, this is a restful riverside reserve and picnic ground under the banks of Dooley's hill. Historical and cultural monuments. Sheean walk starting in Gilbert Street, is a short canopied walk commemorating the heroic wartime exploits of Edward ‘Teddy’ Sheean and Australian conflicts and peacekeeping efforts. Port Sorell Guided Walking Tracks Adjacent to Narawantapu National Park, Port Sorell seaside village is abundant in Tasmanian flora and fauna. Stroll on the coastal and bush reserve tracks and be inspired by the natural beauty, preserved for the enjoyment of all. Pick up your accompanying guide for Port Sorell Walks from the Latrobe Visitor Centre. Kimberley’s Lookout, Sheffield Nook Rd (C150), Sheffield This moderate 90-minute return walk up the Badger Ranges has some steep sections with the lure of stunning 360-degree views from the top. Look for signs on Nook Road for Kimberley’s Lookout and follow the gravel road to a parking area. Sheffield Area - Short Walks This area has many short walking tracks including the mural walking trail along Sheffield’s streets,40-minute Stoodley Forest Walk through pine and beech trees (access off B14), the 90-minute Billett Creek Walk at the Lake Barrington Rowing Course where 1000- year-old manferns reside, or the 15-minute O’Neils Creek Nature Trail at Gowrie Park (access C136). Sheffield Area - Mountain and Waterfall Walks There are half-day and full-day walks of varying length and difficulty traversing Mt Roland, Mt Claude and Mt Van Dyke. Approximately 9 kilometres south-west of Moina are the Bridal Veil and Champagne Falls - 2-hour walks. The Sheffield Visitor Centre can advise on access, walk difficulties and estimated times. Braddons Lookout Braddons Lookout Rd, Leith 10 kilometres east of Ulverstone, the lookout has stunning views of the coastline, Forth valley and beyond.

Dial Range Ironcliffe Rd, Penguin This chain of mountains and valleys was given its name because the silhouette of one of its summits, the Gnomon, resembles an ancient sundial.
