4 A CHRISTMAS CAROL ABOUT VIRGINIA STAGE COMPANY

Virginia Stage Company is Southeastern Virginia’s leading non-profit theatre, serving an audience of over 58,000 patrons annually, both at the Wells Theatre and throughout the community. Our mission is to enrich, educate, and entertain the region by creating and producing theatrical art of the highest quality.

Virginia Stage Company is one of the country’s foremost regional theaters. We are proud of our history of developing new plays and musicals. There have been 28 world premieres at the Wells in our 40 year history. We value collaboration, and have forged meaningful partnerships with many of the extraordinary arts, educational, and social service institutions in Hampton Roads. Virginia Stage productions are created on site and from the ground up – costumes to choreography, sound to lighting – working with a mix of local artists and artisans as well as some of the leading actors, directors, and designers from around the country to produce world class theatre for our Hampton Roads audience.

Virginia Stage Company connects the Hampton Roads community through initiatives that enrich lives and encourage artists and audiences for the future. Our education and community engagement programming strives to reflect the needs of the communities we serve and to advocate for arts integration and experiences that promote literacy, character development, and critical thinking in the next generation.

Virginia Stage Company uses theatre as a catalyst to foster public discourse. We believe that theatre is more than a play, place, or product - it is a living process that can expand thinking and offer fresh perspectives. Learning, critical thinking, and self-confidence all grow as we sit together in one space to experience and contemplate our shared world. Acknowledging and embracing differences in identity is essential to a dynamic cultural conversation - and theatre has just the tools to do that.

Virginia Stage Company is owned by our community and relies heavily on the generosity of individuals, corporations, municipalities and charitable foundations in reaching its mission. For their support and for the invested enthusiasm of our community, we are deeply grateful. To find more information on becoming involved and supporting professional theatre in our region, please visit us at vastage.org.

6 A CHRISTMAS CAROL A NOTE FROM TOM & DAVID

We cannot tell you how meaningful and moving it is to be working with this group of artists and artisans to bring a holiday tradition back to Hampton Roads, here at the end of the most challenging year in our memory. The entire crew is masked and distanced, the cast is always ten feet away from each other, and the work is stunning.

We hope you enjoy this year’s production, reimagined by the incomparable Patrick Mullins, who after years of directing and adapting Dickens’ classic, is finally taking a turn as Scrooge. A Christmas Carol is made possible by the generous support of PNC Bank, who got behind the idea that we should make this available for the entire community. If you are here in person, where we are seating at 18% capacity, with rigorous cleaning protocols in place, welcome! If you are joining us virtually, I suggest you dim the lights get ready for a great ghost story. Either way, A Christmas Carol is a great way to ring out 2020, a year we are all looking forward to showing the door.

In a year like no other, we bring you A Christmas Carol like no other. Enjoy!

SEASON 42 | 2020/2021 17 DRAMATURGY

Dickens and the Theatre

Most people readily classify Dickens as a novelist, a few more add journalist, and fewer still would consider him a playwright. But the theater was Dickens’ first love. He once wrote, “I was an actor and a speaker as a baby.” With no television to watch or radio to listen to, Dickens greatly enjoyed the family nights of amateur theatrical productions. As a schoolboy he formed a small dramatic company of his friends.

At the age of twenty, he applied for and was granted an audition at one of the leading theaters in London, the Covent Garden theater. Fortunately for his future literary fans, he was not able to make his audition having suddenly come down with a bad cold, combined with a tootheache. He never applied again.

However, Dickens did not forget his love for the theater. Though a committed journalist, he dabbled in theater whenever he had an opportunity. At the age of 24, while on his honeymoon, he wrote his first play as entertainment for his bride. The Strange Gentleman was a farce that eventually went on to be peformed at the St. James Theatre for a long run, despite mixed reviews. His next theatrical venture was an operetta called The Village Coquettes for which he wrote the book, lyrics and music.

After years away from the stage, Dickens agreed to direct and perform in three plays while in Montreal, Canada in 1842. The success of the Montreal plays provided the spark that rekindled Dickens’ love of the footlights. Back home in London Dickens gathered friends to perform Ben Jonson’s Every Man in his Humour for charity, which was a huge success.

Throughout his career as a novelist, Dickens continued to write plays, direct and act in his spare time. While most famous for staged readings of his own Dickens as Captain Bodadill, a boastful but cowardly soldier, in a work (primarily A Christmas production of Every Man in His Humour by Ben Jonson. Dickens acted Carol), Dickens wrote and directed the part in amateur productions he organized in 1845, 1847, 1848, and 1850. three other farces, A Roland for an Oliver, A Good Night’s Rest, and Deaf as a Post, which received high-quality amateur productions.

18 A CHRISTMAS CAROL DRAMATURGY

Beginning in 1850 Dickens’ amateur acting troupe performed Edward Bulwer- Lytton’s Not so Bad as We Seem for the benefit of the Guild of Literature and Art, founded by Lytton and Dickens to help support indigent and deserving artists and writers. In London they performed before Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, afterwards taking the show on the road in the north of England, where the troupe performed at the newly built Lyceum Theatre in Sunderland on August 28, 1852 under anxiety that the entire new building would collapse under the cheers of the crowd (Perdue, “Dickens on Stage”).

These amateur theatricals continued throughout the middle years of Dickens’ career as a world famous author. He worked tirelessly as actor and stage manager and, as his friend John Forster remarked, often adjusted scenes, assisted carpenters, invented costumes, devised playbills and generally oversaw the entire production of the performances. This close association with the theater had an important impact on Dickens the author. Theatrical characters abound in the novels and the stories are told in such a visual

way that they easily lent themselves first to Charles Dickens at his last Public reading, illustrations in the novels, stage dramatizations, 1870. Image Source: Leighton, George C.: and finally to film. “Illustrated London News Vol 56” (1870)

Later in his career Dickens’ theatrical training contributed to the success of public readings of his works.

Dickens’ often performed public readings of A Christmas Carol in England as well as America. These readings helped to sustain interest in old Christmas stories and traditions. Dickens pared down A Christmas Carol for his public readings to one that can be read in a single sitting!

His original prompt book contains a significant number of handwritten words and phrases in the margins, intended to remind him of the tone he should take on when reading a particular passage. Audiences at these readings reported that the first few minutes of the performances were somewhat dull and unenergetic, but that Dickens transformed when the character of Scrooge began to speak. They were amazed at his ability to transform himself into each of his characters.

34 A CHRISTMAS CAROL The historic WELLS THEATRE

Designed by the New York firm of E. C. Horn and Sons, the Wells Theatre is significant both as a representation of early 20th-century popular culture and as an outstanding example of Beaux architecture. The Wells was built in 1913 and served as the opulent flagship for Wells Amusement Enterprises, a string of forty vaudeville theaters owned by Jake and Otto Wells throughout the South.

On August 26, 1913, the Wells opened to a full house with The Merry Countess, a Schubert musical. In 1916, Jake Wells installed a movie screen and projector, making the Wells the most dazzling, first- run movie house in the Southeast, although theatrical bookings continued to occupy most of the theatre’s schedule. Many of America’s leading performers appeared at the Wells including John Drew, Maude Adams, Otis Skinner, John Philip Sousa, Billie Burke, Fred and Adele Astaire, and Will Rogers, among many others. Throughout the Great Depression, the Wells continued to stage vaudeville shows and movies, with burlesque being added during World War II to attract the thousands of sailors stationed in Norfolk. In the 1960s, the Wells shared in the general decline of downtown Norfolk by converting to an X-rated movie house and occasionally staging live burlesque shows. The stage itself became the Jamaican Room, one of Norfolk’s infamous gin mills and brothels.

The Theatre originally had 1,650 seats spread over three balconies. The top balcony served as a segregated balcony “For Negro Audiences Only,” and had it’s own entrance and box office. The downstairs lobby facing Tazewell Street housed the original Doumar’s Cones and BBQ.

Shortly after Virginia Stage Company took over the Wells in the late 1970s, the theatre was named to the National Register of Historic Places. Over the last 40 years the Wells has been renovated three times, housed dozens of World Premieres, and hosted more than one million visitors. Virginia Stage Company is proud to have been part of the magnificent revitalization of Downtown Norfolk through its stewardship of the Wells, which is now one of Norfolk’s distinguished Seven Venues. more pictures and information at wellstheatre.org
