We continue that tradition in this issue. This new issue of The Codex is arriving during a pandemic which has shut down all normal services in our state. Rather than let our members and subscribers down, we decided to go digital for this issue. And, by doing so, we NOTE FROM THE EDITOR 1 realized that we could go “large” by publishing Marshall Becker’s important paper on the ANNOUNCEMENTS 2 contents of caches in the Maya world wherein he calls for more investigation into supposedly SITE-SEEING: REPORTS FROM THE “empty” caches at Tikal and at other Maya sites. FIELD: ARCHAEOLOGY IN A GILDED AGE: THE UNIVERSITY OF Hattula Moholy-Nagy takes us back to an earlier PENNSYLVANIA MUSEUM’S TIKAL era in archaeology with her reminiscences of her PROJECT, 1956-1970 days at Tikal in the 1950s and 1960s. Lady by Sharp Tongue got her column in just before the Hattula Moholy-Nagy 3 shut-down happened, and she lets us in on some secrets in Lady K’abal Xook’s past at her GOSSIP COLUMN palace in Yaxchilan. -

2 The Ceramics of Tikal T. Patrick Culbert More than 40 years of archaeological research at Tikal have pro- duced an enormous quantity of ceramics that have been studied by a variety of investigators (Coggins 1975; Culbert 1963, 1973, 1977, 1979, 1993; Fry 1969, 1979; Fry and Cox 1974; Hermes 1984a; Iglesias 1987, 1988; Laporte and Fialko 1987, 1993; Laporte et al. 1992; Laporte and Iglesias 1992; Laporte, this volume). It could be argued that the ceram- ics of Tikal are better known than those from any other Maya site. The contexts represented by the ceramic collections are extremely varied, as are the formation processes to which they were subjected both in Maya times and since the site was abandoned. This chapter will report primarily on the ceramics recovered by the University of Pennsylvania Tikal Project between 1956 and 1970. The information available from this analysis has been significantly clar- ified and expanded by later research, especially that of the Proyecto Nacional Tikal (Hermes 1984a; Iglesias 1987, 1988; Laporte and Fialko 1987, 1993; Laporte et al. 1992; Laporte and Iglesias 1992; Laporte, this volume). I will make reference to some of the results of these later stud- ies but will not attempt an overall synthesis—something that must await Copyrighted Material www.sarpress.org 47 T. Unfortunately, much of the material currently utilized for interpretations about the ancient Maya comes from publications written after contact by the Spanish or from artifacts with no context, likely looted items. Both sources of information can be problematic and can skew interpretations. Cosmological tales documented after the Spanish invasion show evidence of the religious conversion that was underway. Noncontextual artifacts are often altered in order to make them more marketable. An example of an iconographic theme that is incorporated into the surviving media of the ancient Maya, but that is not mentioned in ethnographically-recorded myths or represented in the iconography from most noncontextual objects, are the “travelers”: a group of gods, humans, and animals who occupy a unique niche in the ancient Maya cosmology. -

Because of the volume of requests for additional copies and the influx of new or overlooked citations received since the first printing, production of a second , revised edition became necessary. More than half a hundred new ref erences in Spanish, English, German and French have been incorporated into this new edition and help Strecker's work to maintain its position as the most comprehen sive listing of rock art studies undertaken in Central America. -

METAPHORS OF RELATIVE ELEVATION, POSITION AND RANKING IN POPOL VUH Nathaniel TARN and Martin PRECHTEL Rutgers University This paper is an account of work very much in progress on the textual analysis of Popol V uh, and is one study among others (since this theme is attracting a number of students today) of inter-con nections and mutual illuminations between Popol Vuh and the con temporary ethnographic record in Highland Guatemala and Chiapas. For some considerable time now Popol Vuh has been considered as the major extant text of the Mesoamerican literary traditions, and as one of the most remarkable of all human creation stories, both for its beauty and for the complexity of its cosmological and mythical messages. While it may or may not have had a hieroglyphic original, the present alphabetic version of Po pol V uh wars written down some where between 1545 and 1558 by an anonymous member of the Cavek lineage of the Quiche Maya of Guatemala. This lineage had been a ruling house until it fell to the Spaniards in 1524. The manu script was copied by Francisco de Ximenez, a Spanish priest, some 150 years later. While there are references to Christianity in the text, these are few and it is generally regarded as one of the purest extant accounts of prehispanic Maya world-view. At the end of the hook, what we call mythical history shades into the historical history of the Quiche, so that the hook can serve as an illustration of the extent to which these two kinds of history are not held a,part by Maya generally. -

We know a good deal about the events that led to the conquest of Yucatan by these foreigners, and the subsequent replacement of their state by a resurgent but already decadent Maya culture, for we have entered into a kind of history, albeit far more shaky than that which was recorded on the monuments of the Classic Period. The traditional annals of the peoples of Yucatan, and also of the Guatemalan highlanders, transcribed into Spanish letters early in Colonial times, apparently reach back as far as the beginning of the Postclassic era and are very important sources. But such annals should be used with much caution, whether they come to us from Bishop Landa himself, from statements made by the native nobility, or from native lawsuits and land claims. These are often confused and often self-contradictory, not least because native lineages seem to have deliberately falsified their own histories for political reasons. Our richest (and most treacherous) sources are the K’atun Prophecies of Yucatan, contained in the “Books of Chilam Balam,” which derive their name from a Maya savant said to have predicted the arrival of the Spaniards from the east. -

Mesoweb Publications The Rulers of Palenque INTRODUCTION The unsung pioneer in the study of Palenque’s dynastic history is Heinrich Berlin, who in three seminal studies (Berlin 1959, 1965, 1968) provided the essential outline of the dynasty and explicitly identified the name glyphs and likely accession dates of the major Early and Late Classic rulers (Stuart 2005:148-149). More prominent and well deserved credit has gone to Linda Schele and Peter Mathews (1974), who summarized the rulers of Palenque’s Late Classic and gave them working names in Ch’ol Mayan (Stuart 2005:149). The present work is partly based on the transcript by Phil Wanyerka of a hieroglyphic workshop presented by Schele and Mathews at the 1993 Maya Meet- ings at Texas (Schele and Mathews 1993). Essential recourse has also been made to the insights and decipherments of David Stuart, who made his first Palenque Round Table presentation in 1978 at the age of twelve (Stuart 1979) and has recently advanced our understanding of Palenque and its rulers immeasurably (Stuart 2005). -

Why we use the Aztec Myth (Leyenda de los Soles) to Explain Maya Creations The surviving accounts of the Maya Creation Myth are fragments, tatters. Much more is missing than is there. The earliest surviving fragments appear on the monuments of Izapa (and neighbors) and the newly‐ discovered Murals of San Bartolo (ca. 100 BCE). As if through a keyhole, we glimpse a rich, intricate cosmology connecting time, space and personalities. It relates the cardinal directions to colors, species of trees and game, the calendar, myths, and who knows what else. Eight centuries later, Classic Maya vase painters illustrate a few other Mythic scenes, some involving the Hero Twins. A few Classic stone inscriptions connect Creation with house‐building. Six centuries later, one of the curiosities Cortez presented to the Emperor, a book we call the Dresden Codex, recounts several arcane events which occurred on 4 Ajaw 8 Kumk’u. Later still, a Quiché Maya scribe in the impoverished and conquered Guatemalan highlands copied out the Popol Vuh, connecting his cacique’s ancestors back to the Creations of the World (ca. 1700). It dwells on the Hero Twins, who prepared the world for its final Creation ‐ our Creation. Though it is clear that the Maya conceived a dizzying, intricately interconnected cosmology, we have difficulty working out its details. This is partly due to the fragmentary nature of our evidence, but it is also increasingly clear that the stories varied substantially from city‐state to city‐state. (Not unlike the conflicting versions of Abraham’s Sacrifice: In the Biblical version, the son is Isaac, who goes on to father the Israelites. -

The Palos Mayan Collection sculptures are created by master sculptor Manuel Palos from scholar Joan W. Patten’s casts and rubbings of the original artifacts in Guatemala. Patten received official permission from the Guatemalan government to create casts and rubbings of original Mayan carvings and bequeathed her replicas to collaborator Manuel Palos. Some of the originals stelae were later stolen or destroyed, leaving Patten’s castings and rubbings as their only remaining record. 65 EL MATERIAL DE MOLIENDA DE CHINKULTIC, CHIAPAS María Elena Ruiz Aguilar Keywords: Arqueología Maya, Chiapas, Chinkultic, lítica, piedra de moler, mano de moler, hachuela, pulidor, aspectos clasificatorios En el presente trabajo se da a conocer en forma general el material de molienda y sus derivados, procedente del Proyecto Arqueológico Chinkultic. El estudio forma parte de una investigación mayor, en la que se incluyen otras colecciones de molienda que corresponden a la región, con el objeto de elaborar una clasificación tipológica de los Altos Orientales de Chiapas. Esta región comprende fundamentalmente los valles de Comitán, La Trinitaria y la zona lacustre de Montebello (Navarrete 1975:11). Chinkultic, se localiza en los límites del Parque Nacional de Montebello, a 33 km de la carretera que va de Comitán a dicho centro turístico, en el municipio de La Trinitaria (Figura 1). Los artefactos analizados corresponden a diferentes temporadas de campo (1976 a 2002), y provienen del escombro de 11 estructuras, cuya ubicación se encuentra distribuida en tres conjuntos de la siguiente manera: • E-1 y E-4 en el Conjunto A, donde se asienta la parte alta del grupo. • E-13, E-14, E-16, E-17, E-19 y E-20 en el Conjunto B, que se sitúa en la parte baja y plana, ocupando la porción central, del otro lado del río Yubnaranjo. • Finalmente E-22 (Juego de Pelota), E-23, E-27 y el rancho El Rincón en el Conjunto C, en el extremo suroeste del sitio respectivamente (Figura 2). • El material del rancho El Rincón y de La Bolsa se tomó en cuenta a partir de una muestra de superficie conservada actualmente por sus propietarios.
