“Show Boat” (1932) Added to the National Registry: 2005 Essay by Todd Decker (guest post)* Helen Morgan Original album package Paul Robeson Before the long-playing record (or LP) made original cast albums a key component of the Broadway musical, record companies recognized the potential of turning a Broadway score into a unified experience for home listeners. The 1927 musical “Show Boat” was the first to receive this treatment. In 1932, the year of “Show Boat’s” first Broadway revival, the Brunswick label released a set of four specially-recorded 78s of songs from the show. The discs were bound in a handsome album featuring cover art taken from the sheet music for the Broadway show which had, in turn, been derived from the cover of Edna Ferber’s 1926 novel. The lavish set’s liner notes described the collection as an “album of music from one of the most tuneful and popular operettas of the modern day.” Conducted by Victor Young and using custom orchestral arrangements—not those played by the pit orchestra in the theater—the Brunswick set features two singing stars who shaped “Show Boat” both in the minds of its creators and for the show’s enthusiastic early audiences: Paul Robeson and Helen Morgan. Music critics praised the unity of Young’s collection, “obviously recorded as a unit and with great care.” And even though listening to all eight sides would have been a clunky affair at the time—involving much changing and flipping of discs—Young clearly imagined the set as a whole. The inclusion of sides titled “Overture” and “’Show Boat’ Finale” suggest a partial playing order. -

(Burr Redford) Callis (1891–1971) was born in Kentucky to Stephen Redford Callis and Carrie (Viores) Callis. By 1900 the family moved to Madison, Indiana where his father was a clothing salesman. The family returned to Kentucky in 1910 and farmed in West Milton, in Trimble County. By 1916 Burr had married Daisy J. McIntire and the couple had a son, Roger Burr Callis, born in Madison, Indiana where Burr was working as a grocer. By 1930 the family had moved to 3534 Salem Street in Indianapolis where Burr was living with his wife and son in the home of his parents and working as a sporting goods salesman. Burr and his wife remained in the same house until 1971. -

A GUIDE TO THE GOLDEN EAGLE RIVER MUSEUM COLLECTION P-25 By Sean Visintainer 1 | P a g e Scope and Content Note: The Golden Eagle River Museum contains documents, photographs, film, memorabilia, publications and artifacts related to the Golden Eagle River Museum and the inland waterways of the United States. The records and publications of the Golden Eagle River Museum consist of operational records, such as inventories, ledgers and programming; publicity information and historical notes and clippings regarding the Museum; and legal information such as bylaws, incorporation materials, and leases. Publications in the collection consist of the Golden Eagle River Museum’s publications: All Aboard in the 1940s and 1950s, and the Paddlewheel from the 1970s – 2000s. The publications housed in the collection are not a complete run. The photographs in the collection contain photos of the Golden Eagle Museum and associated personalities, as well as events and programming put on by the Museum or the Club. There are also photographs representing hundreds of inland river vessels from steamboats to motor vessels, and photographs of persons and places important to the inland rivers, such as captains, deckhands, river towns and companies. Many of the river-related records are clippings related to specific vessels, people or places on the inland rivers, but the records also contain bills of lading, correspondence, log books, menus, post cards, drawings, plans, biographies, holiday cards and certificates. The Music of the Golden Eagle Collection consists of albums related to the inland rivers. Ledgers and Scrapbooks in the Golden Eagle Collection include vessel logs, company ledgers, clippings collections, and photographic collections related Golden Eagle member trips. -

HISTORICAL SOCIETY NOTES AND DOCUMENTS PITTSBURGH AND THE FIRST SHOWBOAT: A New Angle on the Chapmans Wayne H. Claeren on the Chapman family, creators of America's first success- Factsful showboat, are difficult to obtain. One source, for example, lists William Chapman, Sr., as making his American acting debut as King Henry inRichard IIIin1827. l Another contemporary says Chapman's first appearance in the United States was as Iago in an 1828 produc- tion of Othello. 2 Still another finds him debuting in America as Billy Lackaday in Sweethearts and Wives.* There is similar disagreement about the time and place of William Chapman's death. Other members of the family have equally confusing histories, and there is even a question as tohow many Chapmans actually existed. Itis reasonable, however, to include in the original showboat family the following members :William, Sr., and his wife Sarah ;their three sons, William B., George, and Samuel (who died before the so-called Floating Theater began) ;two daughters, Caroline and Theresa; and various grandchildren, most notably Harry and another Caroline. 4 Because the Chapmans spent much of their time touring the western rivers, more information about them is based on frontier anecdotes than on the newspapers and playbills which normally trace the careers of actors. Atleast one author, George D. Ford, has collect- ed some of these legends and elaborated on them to such an extent that they contradict the few verifiable facts available. Ford gives as history, for instance, an incredible story of William B. Chapman, Jr., escaping a shotgun wedding. Young William,says Ford, once evaded a venge- ful father and several armed assassins by falling through the vampire trap at Covent Garden, fighting a series of duels, and finally being Wayne Claeren received a Ph.D. -

Historic Floating Theater for Auction in Cincinnati January 22, 2019 CINCINNATI, Jan. 22, 2019 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The Showboat Majestic, a National Historic Landmark, is currently for sale by auction on the online government surplus auction website GovDeals.com. Floating Theater for Auction GovDeals, Inc. The Showboat Majestic was originally built in 1923. The 221-seat theater is known to be the last floating theater in America, and the only one of its kind still intact. The showboat was declared a historic landmark in December 1989. The Majestic was originally purchased by Tom Reynolds. The Reynolds family owned, lived on, and operated the boat for many years, offering travelling entertainment to residents of the towns along the Ohio River. To this day, the Majestic remains the longest-lived floating theater under one owner. The Majestic was also used by students from schools like Kent State University and Indiana University to present shows to their student bodies during the summer months. Reynolds eventually sold the boat to Indiana University for a reported $30,000 in 1959.The boat is now being offered for sale with a starting bid of $10,000. The show boat was purchased by The City of Cincinnati in 1967 and was leased to the University of Cincinnati which operated it until 1988. It was leased to Downie Productions in 1989, and then leased to Cincinnati Landmark Productions (CLP) which operated the theater and performed maintenance and nautical duties until 2013 when they terminated the lease. In 2007, the city agreed to enter into a preservation covenant with the State Historic Preservation Office and the National Park Service in return for a restoration grant from the State. -

The History of the GENERAL JACKSON SHOWBOAT Announcement In late December of 1983, Opryland announced plans for a $10 million showboat project - a 300-foot, four-decked paddle wheeler, which would begin a new era for Nashville’s tourism and entertainment industries. It would also become an important footnote to the history of the floating theaters. We named our showboat the General Jackson in honor of the first steamboat to ply the Cumberland River. Unlike the showboats of the 19th and 20th centuries, the General Jackson offers year-round sightseeing, dining and entertainment cruises. Our showboat carries more than 1,000 passengers and is longer overall than the Delta Queen, the famous Mississippi River boat. Nathan R. Cline, a 10-year veteran with Opryland was named director of the General Jackson. Jeffboat Inc. in Jeffersonville, Indiana, at one time the nation’s largest inland shipyard was assigned to build our showboat. Nickum & Spaulding Associates of Seattle, Washington, was the marine architecture and engineering firm on the project, and Nashvillian Charles Warterfield of Warterfield Goodwin and Associates in Nashville was the consulting architect. Keel-Laying On September 15, 1984, the General Jackson formally marked its construction with a traditional keel laying in the Jeffboat shipyard. Opryland officials, Minnie Pearl and government officials joined the shipbuilders and a gathering of townspeople near the banks of the Ohio River to “lay the keel” for the showboat. The keel laying consisted of placing upright, in position to be joined together, eight huge sections of the hull and welding them together. It is one of the time-honored traditions of shipbuilding. -
