    Dean Village News Issue 183 August 2019 www.deanvillage.org Dean Village Association – the early 80s This was the time when major developments were occurring in the village. High Green. At the end of 1982 negotiations were still not concluded between the Council and the contractors McTaggart and Mickel regarding the purchase of the High Green land between Belford Road and the river. No plans could be found regarding the ownership of the path across this land, called locally “The Stinking Brae”. The Council lodged a compulsory purchase order in order to gain ownership. Residents were concerned that this right of way might disappear under the new flats. One year later these problems were resolved but there was a possibility that the development might not happen. A detailed survey of the land was conducted by the developers who were satisfied that the plans could go ahead. The sale of the land was completed. In 1985 the architects T. M. Gray and Associates started work on the design of the flats. The plans would be open for inspection to all residents. Inner Damside. In 1984 Smart’s started work on their plans, originally approved in 1980, to build fifteen flats, twenty-seven maisonettes and sixteen houses in the area that once housed the Legget’s skinnery. The plan stipulated that a public footpath be created along the bank of the river. The developers hoped to have the first 1 residences for sale in the summer of 1985. Burnside’s shop had become vacant following the death of the owner and had not been included in the plans for the rest of the area.

    No 56 Autumn 2012 Hidden Treasures of the Water of Leith The Water of Leith has a fascinating heritage and this summer we launched a special exhibition and family fun day to celebrate the unique archaeology, geology and industrial heritage of the river. Ulriika and Abi, who have joined us for the summer, spent months researching the history of the river from its source in the Pentland Hills down to Slateford. They created 10 information posters on the following subjects: The River’s Geology, A Tribal Land (early settlements along the river), Ancient Discoveries (celebrating the archaeology of the river), Historic Wonders (the special features, monuments and bridges of the river), and Mill Heritage, which included a collection of all the items made in the mills. Finally the history of the villages of Balerno, Currie, Juniper Green, Colinton and Slateford was revealed. The exhibition was opened on 22nd July along with a special fun day, which formed part of the British Festival of Archaeology. Around 100 visitors enjoyed the day and were treated to many fun ‘historical’ activities. We created a Bronze Age camp in the Dells complete with fire lighting from flint, an authentic shelter, hunting games and creating nettle string. Visitors could try their hand at Archaeology on a dig, metal detecting, and fossil hunting near Bogs Bridge. At the Centre visitors tried their hands at ancient crafts, grinding grain into flour and could dress up in Bronze-Aged costumes courtesy of Historic Scotland. We had expertise from Edinburgh Geological Society and Archaeology Scotland, and lots of help from our volunteers and staff who all helped to make it a really special day.

The Water of Leith As stated in the Introduction, this will be a briefer account than those for the other rivers, following the same template in the upper reaches, but focussing on tributaries past and present once within the city boundary of Edinburgh, until the last stretch through Leith. The sources of the Water of Leith are springs at near 400m height on the northern slopes of West Cairn Hill and Colzium Hill, in the Pentland Range. These feed three streams, rather unimaginatively named, ‘West Burn’, ‘Mid Burn’, and ‘East Burn’, which join together near the hamlet of Colzium, to form the Water of Leith, at Grid Reference NT 086 589. From here, the small river winds north-east for c2.5km until it enters Harperrig Reservoir. This large artificial body of water has a surface area of 94 hectares, and is shaped something like an open-mouthed flounder, with its tail to the south-west, where the Water of Leith enters, and with its jaws to the east. The reservoir was opened in 1860, and its function was to store water which could be used, especially during dry spells, to compensate for water abstracted from the springs referred to above, their effusions having been piped into the Edinburgh water supply. Reservoir water was released as needed to maintain the river flow which drove many mills in the 19th century. Somewhat perversely, its function has turned full-circle, as with the mills defunct, it now holds back water which would otherwise increase the risk of flooding in Edinburgh after heavy rain.

    Dean Village News Issue 182 March 2019 www.deanvillage.org Dean Village Association – the early 80s Major building work was getting under way. In the Sunbury area office- and house-building were being carried out concurrently. The Edwardian façade of Sloan’s garage had been retained, the building was being converted into offices, with a large extension being built, sloping down towards Belford Mews. A car park for the offices was included, which would be available to visitors to the residents out of office hours. Town houses were going up by the riverside. The plans included a footbridge across the river to the waterside footpath. To get to Dean Village it was necessary to go up the steps above the weir to Dean Path and then down the Convening Court steps. The Health and Safety Executive were due to move into the offices and the first houses were occupied by the end of 1982. On the tannery site, all land between Dean Path and the river at the end of Damside had been sold to Smart’s by Weir Construction. Smart’s had been granted permission to build according to their plans providing that a) retaining walls were of rubble stone, b) roofs were to be of natural slate and natural red clay pantiles and c) a public footpath was to be formed along the bank of the Water of Leith. Some demolition had started, but the developers seemed unwilling to accept these conditions, so they might submit new plans, or sell on. Included in the area sold to Smart’s was Burnside’s shop at the top of 1 the slope past Well Court facing down to the river.

  • The Schoolyard Opening
    The Schoolyard Opening Councillor Lesley Hinds cuts the tape on the playbridge over “The Water of Leith”, assisted by young helpers. Chairman of the Dean Village Association, Barry Mackay, keeps an eye on proceedings. 1 The Opening of the Schoolyard It was as long ago as September 2009 when Lesley Hinds and Dean Village Association committee member, Javier Albert, discussed the state of the old Schoolyard, and decided that some improvements were needed. Discussions ensued and in December 2010. James Galloway, Chief Parks Planning Officer produced the first plan for renovation of the area. This was put before members at the Annual General Meeting in April 2011. The members decided that all residents in the Dean Village Conservation area should be consulted. A questionnaire was sent to all 900 households in the Dean Village Conservation area in July. The replies showed that members wanted a landscaped area, plenty of planted shrubs, seating, a litterbin, and an information board. They did not want large items of play equipment, but would approve a small apparatus. These ideas were passed back to the Parks Planning division, which came up with an amended plan. This was put to the AGM of 2012, and approved by members. At this point the Association expected to have to raise funds, some £40,000, and there were still some ownership issues to be resolve. Then in August of this year, the estate of the late Craig Richards, who owned half the yard, transferred ownership to the Council. The Council had also decided to fund the project, which was put out to tender and managed by Edinburgh and Lothian Greenspace Trust.
