The Senior Center of West Seattle infuses warm friendships, healthy activities and joyful experiences into life as people age. We are a welcoming, inclusive place to laugh and learn while finding support for basic needs that foster both independence and engagement with others — a place where seniors, their families and their neighbors can celebrate life and participate meaningfully in our community. Greetings from the Executive Director Dear Friend and Supporter of Senior Center of West Seattle, It is with deep appreciation and gratitude that I write to share news that, after over 6 exceptional years, I will be retiring from my role as the Executive Director of the Senior Center of West Seattle. I will be leaving to spend more time with family and friends and follow my lifelong dream of travelling internationally. My time at the Center has been the singular best experience in my professional life. The past 6 years spent here at our “Jewel of the Junction” have enriched me as a leader and as a human being. I am extraordinarily proud of our fulfilling and important work providing a welcoming, inclusive second home where all seniors and those who love them can feel safe, included and vital. In 2019, we served over 4100 seniors in West Seattle. As the Center approaches it’s fiftieth anniversary in West Seattle, it is more vibrant and successful than ever. The center’s financial foundation is strong and continues to thrive as we meet the needs of our participants and stakeholders. The building has been renovated twice to increase capaci- ty and programming. Rainbow bingo has been sold out for over five years, and, because of you, our annual fundraising breakfast has been up leveled to new heights of community engagement, member accomplishments and financial success. I want to thank our amazing staff, board of directors, donors, volunteers and our entire commu- nity for your continued support. Because of all that you do, the center leads the way in innovative programming, cutting edge events and seminars, and over 50 services and amenities for our old- er adults to enjoy and live more fully. None of this can happen without you, our strong, amazing West Seattle. I am committed to ensuring a smooth and successful transition over the next 2 months and am looking forward seeing you at our 12th Annual Fundraising Breakfast on Tuesday April 28th. Please be sure to register in person at the front desk, online at www.sc-ws.org, or by email at info. [email protected]. In gratitude, Lyle Evans Inclement weather policy: The Center follows the Seattle School District plan. 2 Engage as you age! www.sc-ws.org TABLE OF CONTENTS 2020 SCWS Board Activities Calendar ...............................................................20-23 Art, Computer, Current Events, Ham Radio, Writing 14-15 Amy Lee Derenthal, President Bingo ....................................................................................3, 13, 24 Community Member Birthday Lunches ...................................................................... 8, 9 Karen Pfeiffer-Bush, Vice-President Cards, Games ............................................................................... 13 Studio 65 Design Casino Trips ............................................................................ 21, 23 Cheryl Phelps, Secretary Classifieds ...................................................................................... 30 SASH Realty Coffee Time with Vets ..................................................................4 Janet Leahy, Treasurer Computer Classes ....................................................................... 14 Community Member Dancing, Music, Drumming ................................................4, 13 Board Members: Dance Time/Westside Dance ....................................................4 John Cluff, Community Member Film History ................................................................................... 27 Burke Dykes, Community Member Food Bank ..................................................................................... 11 Dennis Jackson, Community Member Fundraising Donation Form ................................................... 31 Health & Wellness ................................................................ 11, 12 Richard Kromm, Welcome Road Winery Language Classes & Reading ............................................... 26 Carol McClure, Financial Designs Insurance Legacy Gifting.............................................................................. 24 Rebecca Mitsui, Mitsui Real Estate Legal Help ................................................................................... 26 Alison Morton, CFRE, Kindering LGBTQ Second Thursday OUT! ..................................................4 Karen Pfeiffer-Bush, Studio 65 Design Lunch Menus......................................................................... 18, 19 Lora Radford, West Seattle Junction Association Membership Information ...................................................... 31 Dawn Schaper, Community Member Movie Schedule ......................................................................... 27 Committee Chairs: Photo Day Around the Center ............................................... 25 Executive - Amy Lee Derenthal Quilting, Hardanger ................................................................. 13 Finance - Janet Leahy Save the Dates ............................................................................. 32 Fundraising Co-Chairs - Seattle Parks & Recreation Lifelong Recreation .............. 28 Carol McClure, Alison Morton Sea Mar Actividades en Espanol ..............................................5 Sound Generations Advocacy - John Cluff Tax Preparation ..............................................................................5 Ambassador - Vacant Toni’s Tips ...................................................................................... 10 Governance Co-Chairs - Volunteer Information .................................................... 5, 6, 30 Amy Lee Derenthal, Richard Kromm Westside Lesbian Group .............................................................4 World History ............................................................................... 26 Mission Statement: Our mission is to provide a welcoming, inclusive environment where people can enjoy warm friendships, healthy activities, joyful expressions and meaningful engagement as they age.
