Evolutionary Reinforcement Learning of Spoken Dialogue Strategies
Evolutionary Reinforcement Learning of Spoken Dialogue Strategies Dave Toney I V N E R U S E I T H Y T O H F G E R D I N B U Doctor of Philosophy Institute for Communicating and Collaborative Systems School of Informatics University of Edinburgh 2007 Abstract From a system developer’s perspective, designing a spoken dialogue system can be a time-consuming and difficult process. A developer may spend a lot of time anticipating how a potential user might interact with the system and then deciding on the most appropriate system response. These decisions are encoded in a dialogue strategy, essentially a mapping between anticipated user inputs and appropriate system outputs. To reduce the time and effort associated with developing a dialogue strategy, recent work has concentrated on modelling the development of a dialogue strategy as a sequential decision problem. Using this model, reinforcement learning algorithms have been employed to generate dialogue strategies automatically. These algorithms learn strategies by interacting with simulated users. Some progress has been made with this method but a number of important challenges remain. For instance, relatively little success has been achieved with the large state representations that are typical of real- life systems. Another crucial issue is the time and effort associated with the creation of simulated users. In this thesis, I propose an alternative to existing reinforcement learning methods of dialogue strategy development. More specifically, I explore how XCS, an evolutionary reinforcement learning algorithm, can be used to find dialogue strategies that cover large state spaces. Furthermore, I suggest that hand-coded simulated users are sufficient for the learning of useful dialogue strategies. -

13 Courses in 13 days: A golfing experience across the Land of Saltire By Javier Pintos On May 22nd I left Buenos Aires on a trip that in the company we believe is the seed for many more golf trips to “The Home of Golf”. Although we have been in the past to Scotland and we have sold the destination for the past 4 years, this trip was a stronger bet as we were leading a 34 golfers party and we added some more days at three new destinations we had not visited yet (Inverness, Aberdeen and East Lothian) and which we believe deserve to be considered when travelling to The Saltire for a golf trip. Scotland offers not only links golf at the highest level but a lot more for devoted golfers: playing courses were golf oldest Major Championship has been played, visiting places with over 200 years of history with our game and walking along towns that breath golf in every corner. Our first three days were in East Lothian playing Gullane no.1, Muirfield (The Honorable Company of Edimburgh Golfers) and North Berwick using it as a Fam Trip trying to discover every secret of this area in order to be able to tell our customers what to expect when visiting this corner of the country. And we believe it holds one of the biggest advantages: you are so close to Edimburgh that you can go after golf to walk the city, have dinner or just discover Murrayfield, the first Rugby Museum in the world. The golfing tour was about to start, it was an intense journey throught 13 classic venues, playing them, taking pictures, glancing at every detail and breathing golf in every step. -

PE1804/P Petitioner submission of 30 October 2020 In communications with HIAL managers the Benbecula Community Council (BCC) and Far North Aviation based at Wick Airport have found out that the HIAL Board have made their decision to downgrade the air traffic service provision at Benbecula and Wick airports without any supporting operational safety assessments or formal operational Safety Cases. Regardless that the Safety Cases have not yet been written, HIAL are now pressing on with implementing their decision, which have flight safety and flight regularity implications. Both Communities (Benbecula & Wick) have stakeholders, retired pilots/air traffic controllers who have the technical understanding to either comment on or review these Safety Cases when they written. Will HIAL permit any stakeholder involvement, the BCC suspect not. One of HIALs Managers has recently advised a stakeholder at Wick ‘the Flight Information Service unit would still allow most normal operations to take place'. This is a very glib statement for HIAL to make, considering that the operational Safety Cases have not been written. Using HIAL Islay airport as an example where Flight Information Service is the level of air traffic service provided, the following information is officially published under type of traffic permitted at the airport. (Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) /Visual Flight Rules (VFR)) The Aeronautical Information Publication (AIP) states VFR. Additionally, under Flight Procedures in the same document there is a warning: - Use of RNP (effectively IFR) procedures at this Aerodrome restricted to Highlands and Islands Airports Ltd - Approved Operators only. This raises the question how do IFR customers gain access to Benbecula and Wick if the airports are downgraded to the likes of Islay, and what is the HIAL the criteria required to become an HIAL 'Approved Operator'. -
Scotland Golf Visitor Survey 2016 Regional Report – Ayrshire
Scotland Golf Visitor Survey 2016 Regional Report – Ayrshire Background and survey method The data for the survey was collected by: Face-to-face interviews at courses across Scotland – 91 completed in Ayrshire Online survey sent to golf visitors – 46 golfing visitors to Ayrshire responded Total sample for Ayrshire – 123 respondents1 All interviewing was conducted between May and October 2016. The online survey was open from June to November 2016. The data set reported has been weighted to ensure it is representative in terms of month, country of origin of visitors and region. Key Findings Economic Value of Golf Visitors The economic value of golf tourism to Ayrshire is £17.1M (437 jobs supported) 2. Profile of Golf Visitors In terms of country of residence, visitors to Ayrshire’s golf courses are split between those from Scotland (37%), the rest of UK (26%) and overseas (37%). This differs slightly from the profile of visitors to Scotland as a whole (50% from Scotland; 19% rest of UK; 31% overseas). Visitors to Ayrshire are, therefore, more likely to be from the rest of the UK or overseas than the overall Scottish average. A higher proportion of visitors to Ayrshire were staying overnight (81%) compared to the proportion across Scotland as a whole (65%) The vast majority of golf visitors to Ayrshire (81%) are male, while 19% are female which was higher than the Scotland-wide sample (12%). 1 The total sample is less than the F2F plus the online samples combined as some visitors responded to both surveys. 2 Estimates for the value of golf tourism in Scotland’s regions have been calculated using the regional spend figures from staying visitors and day visitors (excluding those visitors who live within 30 miles of the course). -

Bennett Route Brochure
Drive the Historic GORDON BENNETT ROUTE A journey through counties Carlow, Kildare and Laois 2 Welcome note by Mr. John O’Donoghue, T.D., Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism. I welcome this brochure, which traces the route taken through the roads of Laois, Kildare and Carlow, by the famous Gordon Bennett Cup Motor Race in 1903 - an international contest that was the precursor of the present- day Formula marvellous guide1 Grand to the Prix. Route. I am sure that this brochure will prove to be a We must be grateful to the dedicated motoring historians who have unearthed so many interesting facts about the 1903 race, including the lobbying campaign to bring it to Laois, which stressed its value for tourism and the improvements it would bring to the roads. In 1903, the motorcar had a future that few would have dreamt of in those days when the speed limit in Britain and Ireland was 12 miles per hour. A special Act of Parliament was passed to allow the circuit to be closed in for the Gordon Bennett Cup and this enabled the winning Belgian driver to average 49.2 miles per hour in a time of 6 hours and 39 minutes. The original route is now a focused tourist attraction in its own right, taking in quiet and scenic country roads, towns and villages, with many heritage attractions. I congratulate all involved in this excellent brochure and I hope its wide circulation and association with the annual rallies and other motoring events will do much to promote the great benefits of motor sport and tourism in these counties. -
