In order to achieve this goal, the office carried out a series of studies to assess the environmental problems facing the region, as well as proposing mitigation measures to alleviate such problems. Any action to be taken requires information about the availability of scientific and educational institutions which could contribute towards the realization of regional environmental goals. When tackling common environmental problems, such knowledge, among other things, will facilitate the co-operation and co-ordination between resource persons and institutions. Since 1988, UNEP ROWA began the collection of data for the purpose of establishing a network for tertiary level institutions and resource persons working in environmental fields. As a first step in this co-ordination task, ROWA published the Directory for Tertiary Level Training Institution and Resource Persons Working in Environmental Fields. Unfortunately, the first edition covered only a limited number of institutions and resource persons in the region. The present directory was a direct result of a successful campaign to solicit data from a large number of Tertiary Level and Training Institutions throughout the region. It is hoped that this directory will assist in developing stronger co-operation and co-ordination as well as improve data exchange among the various institutions. It is also anticipated that this directory will further facilitate a more comprehensive regional action in solving common environmental problems. SALIH MOHAMED OSMAN Director and Regional Representative UNEP Regional Office for West Asia PREFACE This directory has been prepared to aid those seeking qualified experts in various environmental fields, in order to fulfill the pressing needs for mitigating environmental problems of the region. These environmental problems resulted from the accelerated industrial and economic development that began three decades ago. This directory was first proposed in December 1991 at a meeting held in Bahrain for officials responsible for Environmental Education in West Asia. Participants in this meeting requested UNEP/ROWA to publish the second edition of the Directory of Environment Specialists and Resource Persons in the region, along with a list of their research in various environmental fields.Thë participants also requested that this directory should cover more extensive and detailed information about experts throughout the region. To implement this recommendation, ROWA in the last two years, prepared and distributed a questionnaire to all scientific and tertiary level institutes in the region requesting their co-operation in the distribution of the questionnaires among its staff and specialists in the field of environment. As a result of this extensive effort, the present directory was made possible. It is, therefore, hoped that this directory will achieve its objectives in identifying the environmental specialists working in the region and to lay down the foundation for collaboration and co-operation among them. Both Arabic and English versions of this Directory were printed. The first section of the directory contains names and addresses of 368 resource persons working within the region. The list does not include names of all environmental specialists in the region, but covers only those who responded to our survey and expressed willingness to participate in the training network. The names in the directory are listed according to countries in Arabic alphabetical order. Within each country, these names are further arranged alphabetically by forename in the Arabic edition and alphabetically by surname in the English edition. The titles of research papers published by resource persons are listed in the second section. About 479 research papers on various environmental topics are listed. The annexure lists a statistical analysis of all the information received on resource persons and their researches mentioned in this Directory. Finally, I would like to extend my profound thanks to Dr. Osma Abdul Hadi for his assistance in developing the special computer programme for this directory and further to extend my sincere thanks and appreciation to Ms. Abeer Dallul for her role in organizing and printing the information received. It is hcped that this Directory will succeed in achieving its planned objective.
