SPORTING LEGENDS: NADIA COMANECI SPORT: GYMNASTICS COMPETITIVE ERA: 1970 - 1981 Nadia Elena Comaneci (originally Comăneci) (born November 12, 1961) is a Romanian- born gymnast, winner of five Olympic gold medals, and the first to be awarded a perfect score of 10 in an Olympic gymnastic event. She is considered by some to be one of the greatest athletes in the 20th century and one of the world's greatest gymnasts of all time. She first competed nationally within Romania in 1970, as a member of her hometown team. She was soon coached by Bela Karolyi and his wife Marta, who would later defect to the United States and become coaches of many great American gymnasts. As a 13-year-old, Comaneci's first major success was at the 1975 European Championships in Skien, Norway, winning three gold medals and one silver. At the Pre- Olympics competition in Montréal in 1975 Nadia won the All-Around title. That same year the Associated Press named her their "Athlete of the Year." At age 14, Comaneci became the star of the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montréal, Québec. Not only did she become the first gymnast at the Olympics to receive the perfect score of ten (which she repeated 6 more times), she also won three gold medals (individual all-around, balance beam and uneven bars), a silver medal (team all-around) and a bronze (floor exercise). Back home, her success led her to be named a "Hero of Socialist Labor," the youngest Romanian to receive that recognition. Nadia had earned 19 perfect scores before Montreal.

Professor Smith is on the journalism faculty at the University of Southern California and also serves as ad~inistrator of the university's Sports Information Program. The qrticle, which appeared in the November 1982 issue of The Quill, expressed Professor Smith's outrage at the lack of coverage given the 1980 Olympics in Moscow by the American media. Professor Smith was one of a "small, determined band of Americans" who defied President Carter's boycott and attended the Moscow Games. Before his departure, h'e made arrangements with the USC library to hold major newspapers and national magazines published during the Games. He also asked the broadcast division of the journalism school to videotape all network television coverage. • Women's Artistic Gymnastics During the Cold War and Its Aftermath
A Balance of Power: Women’s Artistic Gymnastics During the Cold War and Its Aftermath Georgia Cervin Bachelor of Arts (Honours), University of Otago This thesis is presented for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy of The University of Western Australia School of Humanities, History 2017 ii Abstract Women’s Artistic Gymnastics (WAG) entered Olympic competition in 1952, when the first appearance of the USSR started forty years of ascendancy. By 2000, emphasis on spectacle and risk had replaced its balletic origins. This research traces such development of WAG during the Cold War and its aftermath, through exploration of the differing responses to Soviet domination in the United States, Australia and the international gymnastics federation (FIG). It pursues this through semi-structured oral histories, print media sources and – uniquely among studies of gymnastics – the archives of the FIG and the International Olympic Committee (IOC). In doing so this thesis has two aims: first, to make sense of WAG’s development with consideration of international sporting governance, and second, to position it within wider understandings of the Cold War. In this thesis I argue that the context of the Cold War was crucial to the development of WAG, both internationally and domestically within the USA as well as Australia. Cold War rivalry heightened the importance placed on Olympic competition as one of the foremost demonstrations of soft power and national ascendency. The Cold War not only motivated the pursuit of international success on the Olympic stage, it resulted in female gymnasts being used in political endeavours. It influenced the rhetoric surrounding women’s sport, where women’s gymnastics was in the vanguard.
