  • The Sci-Fi Optimist
COMMENT BOOKS & ARTS literature and science. Journey to the Centre of the Earth (1864) is about scien- REX tific method and its misuses. Scientists Professor Lidenbrock and Axel enter Earth through an Icelandic crater and, after improbable adventures involving mastodons and underground oceans, are ejected through the Italian volcano Strom- boli. Lidenbrock ignores data that disturb his schema. Axel is a romantic who fails to examine observable facts. Yet the book probes scientific wonder: when Axel is lost and terrified in subterranean darkness, the reader experiences awe contemplating the complete absence of light. The French-language genre advanced significantly with the uncompromis- ing scientific approach of J.-H. Rosny Aîné — the pseudonym of the Belgian Joseph Henri Honoré Boex. In the 1910 Death of the Earth, Rosny’s vision of global environmental crisis is prescient. An imbalance created partly by humans turns Earth to desert. Targ, the last man, succumbs with Darwinian altruism. To celebrate the centennial of this publication, the Pictoumasons website presents a complete set of indexed issues of the magazine. As far as the editor was able to, books which were suggested to the reader have been searched for on the internet and included in 'The Builder' library.' This is a book that was preserved for generations on library shelves before it was carefully scanned by one of several organizations as part of a project to make the world's books discoverable online. • Disruptor in Chief
the author(s) 2019 ISSN 1473-2866 (Online) ISSN 2052-1499 (Print) www.ephemerajournal.org volume 19(3): 663-670 Disruptor in chief Thomas Lopdrup-Hjorth review of Woodward, B. (2018) Fear – Trump in the White House. London: Simon & Schuster (HB, pp xxii + 420, £12,29, ISBN: 978-1-4711-8129-0) Bob Woodward’s book Fear: Trump in the White House was one of the most awaited, hyped, and talked about books of 2018 – and understandably so. Woodward has authored or coauthored 18 books, several of which have portrayed American presidents and topped the national bestseller-lists. His previous work, not least with Carl Bernstein at the Washington Post, has earned him fame and acclaim, and has, among other things, been instrumental in starting a process that brought a former president down (e.g. Bernstein and Woodward, 1974). In 1973, the Washington Post received a Pulitzer Price for public service for the reporting Woodward and Bernstein did on the Watergate break-in. Here, they revealed how the scandal had ties all the way to the White House, implicating President Nixon who had to resign, as the nefarious details were uncovered. Woodward’s role in shaping America’s recent political history explains the hype and anticipation leading up to the publication of his latest book on Trump in the White House. And it perhaps also explains some of the mild disappointment generated in reading the book – at least for readers who had expected (or hoped for) consequences that merely gestured in the direction of those generated by the disclosure of the Watergate-scandal.

  • I AM BRIAN WILSON Brian Wilson October 11Th, 2016
I AM BRIAN WILSON Brian Wilson October 11th, 2016 OVERVIEW: As a cofounding member of The Beach Boys in the 1960s, Brian Wilson created some of the most groundbreaking and timeless music ever recorded. Derailed in the 1970s by mental illness, excessive drug use, and the shifting fortunes of the band’s popularity, Wilson came back again and again over the next few decades, surviving and ultimately thriving. In his memoir entitled I Am Brian Wilson, he details the exhilarating highs and lows of his life from his failing memory, including the sources of his creative inspiration throughout the decades. - - - - - - - - - EARLY LIFE: Brian Wilson was born on June 20th, 1942 to Audree and Murry Wilson. Growing up in Hawthorne, California, Wilson exhibited unusual musical abilities, such as being able to hum the melody from When the Caissons Go Rolling Along after only a few verses had been sung by his father before the age of one. Surprisingly, a few years later, he was discovered to have diminished hearing in his right ear. The exact cause of this hearing loss is unclear, though theories range from him simply being born partially deaf to a blow to the head from his father, or a neighborhood bully, being to blame. While Wilson’s father was a reasonable provider, he was often abusive. A minor musician and songwriter, he also encouraged his children in this field in numerous ways. At an early age, Brian was given six weeks of lessons on a toy accordion and, at seven and eight, sang solos in church with a choir.

  • Summer Reading Letter 2019
May 2019 Dear Incoming Pre-AP English 9 Students and Parents: Since the 2006-2007 school year, the English Department at Lebanon High School has required a summer reading assignment for our Honors College Level students. One goal of this program is to provide opportunities for LHS English Honors students to grow in their understanding of various genres of literature. We also want to emphasize the significances of reading and the writing process in academic growth. All LHS English Honors College Level students are required to read at least one book, complete various assignments in conjunction with the reading, and be prepared to discuss the literature and/or do a presentation over the work at the beginning of the school year. For the summer of 2019, Pre-AP 9 students will be choosing a memoir or autobiography to read. A memoir is an autobiographical piece of writing that generally focuses on a portion of the author’s life rather than the entire scope of his or her life. Memoirs often focus on a brief period of time or series of related events. Although they are factual, memoirs often possess a fictional quality of storytelling, including elements like setting, characterization, plot development, conflict, imagery, foreshadowing and flashback, irony, and symbolism (www.inkspell.homestead.com/memoir.html). Students are responsible for obtaining the book of their choice from the attached list. The Lebanon Public Library has been given this list and should have copies of some, if not all, of these books. These books can also be easily purchased from a reputable bookstore or through online bookstores such as www.amazon.com or www.barnesandnoble.com.
