  • Summer Reading Letter 2019
May 2019 Dear Incoming Pre-AP English 9 Students and Parents: Since the 2006-2007 school year, the English Department at Lebanon High School has required a summer reading assignment for our Honors College Level students. One goal of this program is to provide opportunities for LHS English Honors students to grow in their understanding of various genres of literature. We also want to emphasize the significances of reading and the writing process in academic growth. All LHS English Honors College Level students are required to read at least one book, complete various assignments in conjunction with the reading, and be prepared to discuss the literature and/or do a presentation over the work at the beginning of the school year. For the summer of 2019, Pre-AP 9 students will be choosing a memoir or autobiography to read. A memoir is an autobiographical piece of writing that generally focuses on a portion of the author’s life rather than the entire scope of his or her life. Memoirs often focus on a brief period of time or series of related events. Although they are factual, memoirs often possess a fictional quality of storytelling, including elements like setting, characterization, plot development, conflict, imagery, foreshadowing and flashback, irony, and symbolism (www.inkspell.homestead.com/memoir.html). Students are responsible for obtaining the book of their choice from the attached list. The Lebanon Public Library has been given this list and should have copies of some, if not all, of these books. These books can also be easily purchased from a reputable bookstore or through online bookstores such as www.amazon.com or www.barnesandnoble.com.

  • Richard Bach
The Bridge Across Forever: A Lovestory By Richard Bach Publication Date: October 1989 Publisher: Random House Publishing Group ISBN: 9780440108269 ISBN: 0440108268 Synopsis If you've ever felt alone in a world of strangers, missing someone you've never met, you'll find a message from your love in The Bridge Across Forever. Annotation Bach's first person account of his search for the soulmate he knew he was born to meet. a moving honest love story from the author of Jonathon Liningston Seagull. Review by Publishers Weekly An extended dialogue between Bach and his inner child comprises the latest book from the author of Jonathan Livingston Seagull. While hang-gliding one afternoon, Bach is reminded of a promise he made to himself when he was a child: to write a book containing the sum of all he has learned and deliver it to his nine-year-old self, Dickie. But Bach finds that Dickie is angry and hurt at having been locked away for the last 50 years. Slowly a dialogue emerges, as Bach tries to pass on his years of experience and in return relives some buried memories, particularly the events surrounding the death of his brother Bobby. What results is a kind of Richard Bach primer, summing up the author's thoughts on time, love, death and God and laying out a belief system not unlike George Bernard Shaw's idea of the Life Force. Participating in this shared voyage of discovery is Bach's wife, who contributes her own insights and acts as a kind of reality check on her husband.

  • Peter C. Gøtzsche: Death of a Whistleblower and Cochrane's Moral
PETER C. GØTZSCHE: DEATH OF A WHISTLEBLOWER AND COCHRANE’S MORAL COLLAPSE Transcribed from a presentation delivered at a CrossFit Health event at CrossFit Headquarters on June 8, 2019: I want to start by thanking CrossFit for contacting me some months ago. I had a telephone call with them, and I must admit I didn't really know what CrossFit was. But I do that now, and I really like what you're up to, what you want to achieve, and my youngest daughter said, “But Dad, we have one in our own little town,” that she had visited. So yes, even in our little town we have a CrossFit gym. So, I think it's a very nice organization, and I'm very happy to be here, and I'm not even jet-lagged right now. Now, I gave a lecture in Berlin a year ago in a new series at the Max Planck Institute, called “Heroes of Science,” and I was going to tell young researchers from the whole world how do you speak truth to power and survive, which I had done for 30 years, which people considered quite remarkable at the time, that I could have survived for so long. So, I went there and gave my talk, and since I had been haunted for quite awhile by Cochrane's new CEO who was employed seven years ago — He is a journalist. He doesn't really understand what science is about, and yet he is leading a big scientific organization. So, whenever somebody complained about me, he didn't support me but the complainers, as you can see, who had their own turfs to defend every time.

INFORMATION TO USERS This material was produced from a microfilm copy of the original document. While the most advanced technological means to photograph and reproduce this document have been used, the quality is heavily dependent upon the quality of the original submitted. The following explanation of techniques is provided to help you understand markings or patterns which may appear on this reproduction. 1. The sign or “target" for pages apparently lacking from the document photographed is "Missing Page(s)". If it was possible to obtain the missing page(s) or section, they are spliced into the film along with adjacent pages. This may have necessitated cutting thru an image and duplicating adjacent pages to insure you complete continuity. 2. When an image on the film is obliterated with a large round black mark, it is an indication that the photographer suspected that the copy may have moved during exposure* and thus cause a blurred image. You will find a good image of the page in the adjacent frame. 3. When a map, drawing or chart, etc., was part of the material being photographed the photographer followed a definite method in "sectioning" the material. It is customary to begin photoing at the upper left hand corner of a large dieet and to continue photoing from left to right in equal sections with a small overlap. If necessary, sectioning is continued again — beginning below the first row and continuing on until complete. 4. The majority of users indicate that the textual content is of greatest value, however, a somewhat higher quality reproduction could be made from "photographs" if essential to the understanding of the dissertation.

  • ABSTRACT Examining Disability in the Lives of Franklin D. Roosevelt
ABSTRACT Examining Disability in the Lives of Franklin D. Roosevelt, Christopher Reeve, and Joni Eareckson Tada Madelaine Walker Director: Jason Whitt, Ph.D. In today’s society, disability is often viewed as a problem in need of a medical solution, and suffering is seen as an aspect of life that needs to be eliminated. This thesis examines the lives of Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Christopher Reeve, and Joni Eareckson Tada, all of whom became paralyzed, to show that disability and suffering could behold the key to how life should truly be lived, in order to develop better relationships with God. These three individuals faced many trials on their journeys, yet each ultimately became an advocate for people with disabilities, whether that be focused in disability rights, medical research, or spiritual healing. Lastly, the effect of disability on their purposes in life and on their abilities to fully accept themselves in their ‘broken’ bodies will be discussed. • The Bostonians from Novel Into Film Dorota Babilas Abstract Henry
Journal of American Studies of Turkey 40 (2014): 37-54 The Bostonians from Novel into Film Dorota Babilas Abstract Henry James’s novel The Bostonians presents an emotional and political struggle between a traditionalist Southerner, Basil Ransom, and his Boston-based feminist cousin, Olive Chancellor, for influence over a debutante public speaker, Verena Tarrant. Two film adaptations of The Bostonians have been made: the heritage style costume drama directed by James Ivory in 1984, and the modern reworking titled The Californians (2005, dir. Jonathan Parker). The adaptations shift the perception of emotional attachment between Olive and Verena from late-Victorian romantic friendship to thinly veiled lesbianism. Ivory’s film uses the plot of James’s novel to relate to the problems of the late twentieth century, especially the issue of the conservative backlash in the 1980s. Parker’s version shifts the focus of the narrative from women’s rights to environmentalism. Keywords Henry James, The Bostonians, film adaptation, feminism, lesbianism Henry James’s novel The Bostonians presents an emotional and political struggle between a traditionalist Southerner, Basil Ransom, and his Boston-based feminist cousin, Olive Chancellor, for the soul of a debutante public speaker, Verena Tarrant. Most scholars perceive The Bostonians as James’s critical commentary on the budding feminist movement in America, even though the novelist’s biography might suggest that he was quite sympathetic towards the cause of women’s rights. The novel was adapted for the big screen in 1984, by director James Ivory. The film adaptation shifts the perception of emotional attachment between Dorota Babilas Olive and Verena from late-Victorian romantic friendship to thinly veiled lesbianism.
