    Brussels, 24 February 2021 Declaration from Members of the European Parliament to urge the Commission and Member States not to block the TRIPS waiver at the WTO and to support global access to COVID-19 vaccines We, Members of the European Parliament, urge the European Commission and the European Council to review their opposition to the TRIPS waiver proposal at the World Trade Organisation (WTO), which serves to enable greater access to affordable COVID-19 health technologies, including vaccines, in particular for developing and middle income countries. This call comes in view of the European Council meeting of 25 February 2021 and the crucial decision to be made by all Member States at the WTO General Council on 1-2 March 2021. Since the beginning of the pandemic, the need to ensure global open access to COVID-19 health technologies and to rapidly scale up their manufacturing and supply has been widely acknowledged. However, despite efforts and statements made by the European Commission and several heads of state in support of treating COVID-19 medical products as global public goods, this has not yet translated into actionable realities. In this context, the EU’s open opposition to the TRIPS waiver risks exacerbating a dangerous North-South divide when it comes to affordable access to COVID-19 diagnostics, personal protective equipment, treatments and vaccines. The WTO decision on a potential waiver offers a crucial and much-needed act of effective solidarity, as it is an important step towards increasing local production in partner countries and, ultimately, suppressing this pandemic on a global scale.

    Volodymyr Zelensky President Ukraine CC: Federica Mogherini High Representative of the Union Brussels, 04 september 2019 Dear President, It has come to our attention that the Russian Federation has requested that Mr Vladimir Borisovich Tsemakh be handed over as part of a prisoner exchange negotiated between the Russian Federation and Ukraine. Mr Tsemakh is a former commander of pro-Russian air defence forces in the non-government controlled territory of the so-called "Donetsk People's Republic" and is a key suspect in the tragedy of passenger flight MH17, shot down in eastern Ukraine on 17 July 2014 by a Russian BUK missile. All 298 people on board, including 196 Dutch, were killed. While we understand the context within which such negotiations are taking place and the diplomatic efforts by the Ukrainian authorities to this end, Mr Tsemakh is a suspect in the criminal investigation related to the downing of flight MH17 and his availability and testimony before the Joint Investigation Team is thus of the utmost importance for an effective prosecution by the countries involved. Mr Tsemakh is a Ukrainian citizen and is under Ukrainian custody. UNSC resolution 2166 demands that those directly or indirectly responsible for the downing of MH17 must be held accountable and must be brought to justice. The European Parliament and the European Council have reiterated on numerous occasions their full support to the work of the Joint Investigation Team and the ongoing efforts. All States that are in a position to assist with the investigation and prosecution of those responsible must fully cooperate with the ongoing criminal investigation.

We argue that information from the media is crucial for providing linkages between candidates and voters. Moreover, we contend that candidates can serve as information short-cuts given the complexity of European Union politics. We use a four-wave Dutch panel survey and a media study that enable us to link evaluations of lead candidates, party preferences, and vote choice to exposure to news about these candidates. We show, firstly, that exposure to candidate news is a strong explanatory factor for candi- date recognition. Secondly, we find that candidate evaluations positively affect party choice, albeit mainly for those voters who tend to be politically aware. Our research has implications for debates about the European Union’s accountability deficit. Sustainable Development Earth System Governance Faculty of Geosciences Lukas Jansen - 5853443 [email protected] July 2018 A RESEARCH INTO AVIATION TAXATION POLICY DEVELOPMENTS IN THE NETHERLANDS Abstract This research looks into the policy developments of aviation taxation, specifically framing the Netherlands as the country of interest. As it becomes ever more clear that the aviation industry has a negative impact on the climate through greenhouse gas emissions, society is in need of sustainable solutions for this sector. Seeing how aviation has come to be a vital element in the global scheme of trade and leisure, this solution is not easily identified and adopted. New measures are being developed or are already in place on the international level, but individual countries do sometimes feel the obligation to take action themselves. In the Netherlands, travellers have been subject to a flight ticket tax, which was implemented by the Dutch government in the summer of 2008. Exactly one year later, this tax was repealed. Several years after this happened, a new Dutch government – formed in the end of 2017 – has announced possible implementation of a similar tax. Taking the events in 2008 and 2009 as the focal point, this research deploys a discourse network analysis to give further insights into the policy developments that have taken place. Data is gathered from three prominent Dutch newspapers over different time periods, ranging from 1990 to 2018. The data is coded into statements in Discourse Network Analyzer, which builds up a database with information relating to opinions of organisations.
