December is usually a bit quiet on the new release front, but there are some interesting issues to highlight: DG lead with a strong foursome, including new recordings from Dudamel, Barenboim, Mayer and Batiashvili - all world-class artists at the top of their game. Sony also have some excellent releases, perhaps most notably including the new Don Giovanni from MusicaAeterna under Teodor Currentzis. Our pick of the Naxos issues would include Boris Tishchenko’s Symphony no.8 and Donizetti’s Messa di Gloria. We are also big fans of the latest offering from Les Siecles, who this time turn to contemporary repertoire with a recording of chamber works by Ligeti. And we mustn’t forget our Disc of the Month - a beautiful recording of music for Epiphany from the Choir of Clare College, Cambridge, perfect for the Christmas/New Year period. There are of course the usual new boxsets appearing, including anthologies of David Oistrakh, Kathleen Battle, Alexis Weissenberg and Philip Glass, the RCA Living Stereo vol.3 compilation, and the new Inaugural Season box from the MET being distributed in the UK by Warner Classics.
