Dear Customer, The festivities are nearly upon us and we have certainly been feeling it at Europadisc over recent weeks! Boxsets have been flying out of the door and our online one-day sales have been as popular as ever. Do let us know if you would like to sign up to receive our emails - as well as our weekly reviews, we have lots of extra offers at this time of year that may take your fancy. You are still more than welcome to order by phone after browsing the website! Please take note of the last posting dates for Christmas (detailed on the back cover). Orders to be sent overseas should be sent to us as soon as possible (if they are required this side of Christmas); UK customers should be safe until the middle of the month, although we would advise against banking on receiving DG/Decca imports before Christmas at this stage. If you are looking to find some Christmas music, we have listed some of our current favourites on pp.6-7. Many more titles are available to view online - simply select the ‘Christmas’ genre on our advanced search page to browse. If you are looking for something specific that you can’t see in this catalogue, please don’t hesitate to give us a call and we would be happy to help. December is usually a bit quiet on the new release front, but there are some interesting issues to highlight: DG lead with a strong foursome, including new recordings from Dudamel, Barenboim, Mayer and Batiashvili - all world-class artists at the top of their game. Sony also have some excellent releases, perhaps most notably including the new Don Giovanni from MusicaAeterna under Teodor Currentzis. Our pick of the Naxos issues would include Boris Tishchenko’s Symphony no.8 and Donizetti’s Messa di Gloria. We are also big fans of the latest offering from Les Siecles, who this time turn to contemporary repertoire with a recording of chamber works by Ligeti. And we mustn’t forget our Disc of the Month - a beautiful recording of music for Epiphany from the Choir of Clare College, Cambridge, perfect for the Christmas/New Year period. There are of course the usual new boxsets appearing, including anthologies of David Oistrakh, Kathleen Battle, Alexis Weissenberg and Philip Glass, the RCA Living Stereo vol.3 compilation, and the new Inaugural Season box from the MET being distributed in the UK by Warner Classics. New special offers centre around the complete catalogues of Alpha, Linn and MDG, plus we have reductions on the Coro and Regent labels (including some great Christmas choral repertoire), a selection of ‘Classical Masters’ boxsets from Sony and DVDs/Blu-rays from Warner Classics. Finally, please allow us to take this opportunity to wish you all a very Merry Christmas! We hugely appreciate all of your custom throughout the year and look forward to supplying your classical requirements in 2017. We will be taking a break between Christmas and New Year, closing at 3pm on Friday 23 December 2016 and re-opening at 9am on Tuesday 3 January 2017. • The 2018 Guide Festivals
April 2018 The 2018 Guide Festivals FEATURE ARTICLE 10 Questions, Two (Very Different) Festivals Editor’s Note Our fifth annual Guide to Summer Festivals is our biggest yet, with some 85 annotated entries, plus our usual free access to the 1400 listings in the Musical America database. The details for the 85—dates, locations, artistic directors, programming, guest artists, etc.—have been provided by the festivals themselves, in response to a questionnaire sent to our list of Editor’s Picks. Those are determined by a number of factors: it’s hardly a surprise to see the big-budget events, such as Salzburg, Tanglewood, and Aspen, included. But budget is by no means the sole criterion. The 2018 Guide Programming, performers, range and type of events offered—all of these factor into the equation. For our feature article, we chose two highly regarded events and asked them one set of questions, just for the purposes of compare and contrast. Since George Loomis traveled to Ravenna last summer and knows Ojai well, we decided he was the perfect candidate to get the answers. Our hunch that the two couldn’t be more different turned out to be quite accurate: one takes place over a weekend, the over a two-month period; one is in the U.S., the other in Europe; one is rural, the other urban; one’s in a valley, the other by the sea; one focuses on contemporary fare, the other on traditional; one houses its artists in homes, the other in hotels; one is overseen by a man, the other by Festivals a woman; Ojai’s venues are primarily outdoor and strictly 20th century, Ravenna’s are mostly indoor and date as far back as the sixth century.

Just 26 days before the American electorate chooses a suc- cessor to her husband on Nov 8, a visibly angry first lady deliv- ered a fiery takedown of the real estate mogul and his “dis- graceful” behavior. “Now is the time for all of us to stand up and say, enough is enough,” Mrs Obama told a rally for Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton in New Hampshire. “This has got to stop right now.” Her husband turned up the heat later yesterday, jetting to the key swing state of Ohio to lash Republicans tight to their sinking ship. The New York mogul came from a “swamp of crazy” that Republicans had cultivated over decades, Obama told the state where Trump has long held a lead but where a poll on Thursday edged Clinton ahead. Obama warned that American “democracy itself” is on the ballot. He trashed Trump as a dictator-in-the-making, but also voiced concerns about how Trump’s legion of supporters might react to a possible election defeat.

Deqbasi proposed that electoral districts be based on the six existing governorates in the country, with four of the governorates electing 10 MPs each and the remaining two electing just five lawmakers each to make up the 50 members of the National Assembly. According to the bill, residential areas in the Capital governorate will make up the first constituency, which will elect 10 MPs. Each eligible voter will be allowed to select a maximum of four candidates. Hawally, Farwaniya and Ahmadi governorates will make the sec- ond, third and fourth constituencies respectively, and each of them will elect 10 lawmakers. Also, each voter in these districts can select a maximum of four candidates. The last two districts will be that of Mubarak Al-Kabeer and Jahra governorates, with each electing five MPs and every voter allowed to select up to two candidates.
