During the period when the Sacred Mantra was considered indispensible to one and all – Bhagavad Ramanuja, said to His Guru - “Gurudev! If my act of

Karthikeyan* ABSTRACT Tiruvannamalai is a town in the state of Tamilnadu, administrated by a special grade municipality that covers an area of 16.33 km2 (6.31 sq.m) and had a population of 144,278 in 2011. It is the administrative headquarters of Tiruvannamalai District. Located on the foothills of Annamalai. Tiruvannamalai has been ruled by the Pallavas, the Cholas, Hoysalas, the Vijayanagar Empire, the Carnetic Kingdom, Tipu sultan, and the British. It served as the capital city of the Hoysalas. The town is built around the Annamalaiyar Temple. INTRODUCTION Tiruvannamalai is an ancient temple town in TamilNadu with a unique historical back ground. The Tiruvannamalai is named after the central deity of the four great Tamil saivaite poets Sambandar, Sundarar, Annamalaiyar Temple. According to experts, Hindu temples did not exist before or during the Vedic period (1500-500 BC). The concept of idol worship came into existence only after this era - this in turn gave rise to the construction of shrines and temples of all shapes and sizes. Most of the major Hindu temples are truly amazing, jaw-dropping creations, which inspire a sense of awe and wonder in us. Yet others give rise to a totally different sensation in us - that of being in a mystical; sort of magical and surreal location. In this post, we bring you a feature on five major Hindu temples, which seem unusually numinous and are shrouded in mystery and mysticism. Konark Sun Temple The Konark Sun Temple, also referred to as Konarak Sun Temple and Surya Deula, was built in 13th century CE. Located about 35 kilometers northeast of Puri, it lies along the coastline of Odisha. This temple is attributed to King Narasimhadeva of the Eastern Ganga Dynasty (around 1250 CE). Dedicated to Surya (the Sun God), this structure is presently a 100-foot high chariot with huge wheels and horses; all carved from stone. Today, much of the temple is in ruins. A large shikhara, which rose high above the present mandapa, has unfortunately fallen off. The surviving structure is famed for its intricate sculpture, artwork and themes including the erotic Kama and Mithuna scenes. Built in the typical Oriyan style of temple architecture, it stood over 200 feet high before the start of its ruin.

Introduction The Cholas of the Tanjore line, also known as the Imperial Cholas ruled over most of South India for about four centuries ie, 875 -1175 AD. The political and ceremonial centre of the Cholas was Thanjavur (Tanjai). The Cholas linked themselves to the Solar dynasty. The Cholas conquered parts of the Gujarat, Malwa, Deccan and Indonesia, Lakshadweep, Maldives and Sri Lanka in entirety. Bay of Bengal came to be known as the ‘Chola Lake’ as they dominated the area with their powerful navy. The entire coast from Kanyakumari to Bengal came to be captioned ‘Cholamandalam’. Coramandal is the anglicised name of Cholamandalam. It is also noteworthy that they dominated the other two seas. Owing to the Chola rule, during this period, there was remarkable political stability in South India.

Traditionally archaeology and monuments have been the prime motivation for a visitor to Odisha who usually returns with enchanting experience, enduring thoughts and lingering memories of an endearing and hospitable Odia people, their picturesque land and above all the magnificent monuments. For touristic interest, this ancient land of Odisha offers its rich and varied archaeological treasures and wealth of monuments in a pristine and fortunately intact form. The entire length and breadth of the state are dotted with a large number of standing monuments and archaeological sites which would be around 4000- in the figure. The range of monuments includes early Jaina caves and temples; Buddhist Viharas (Monasteries), chaityas (apsidal structures), stupas; Hindu temples; mosques; churches; ancient and medieval forts; palaces of erstwhile kings and the colonial architecture. So how are we as Indians and citizens of the modern world going to establish this truth? This is when we should go back and draw upon the treasure trove of wisdom we have inherited from our ancestors and see how they lived, our ancestors were not mere people “The curse upon our society is ignorance about our traditions and the basic spiritual they were rishis, kings, people with principles. This needs to change. Amma has visited so many countries around the world wisdom who had accomplished and personally met so many people there. All of them, including the indigenous people and truly laid down and practiced of Australia, Africa and America, take pride in their heritage and traditions. But here a systematic way of life. But most in India, many among us neither have understanding nor pride. In fact some of us even importantly they taught us to ridicule our culture. Only if we first lay a strong foundation can we hope to erect a tall love and it can be done practicing building. Similarly only if we have knowledge and pride in our forefathers and heritage, non attachment and nonviolence. can we create a radiant present and future”. Education was an intertwined essence of both worldly and spiritual knowledge, which resulted in good leaders and quality citizens.
