As before, I must remind readers that preparing such a large review – especially large this time – carries the risk of incorrect catalogue numbers or purchase links, though I have tried to make the latter clearer than before. Please check before ordering. Some time ago I mentioned that trusty old Winamp, though it works with downloads in Windows 10, has not been updated for quite some time and that I had noticed occasional glitches. Recently I have been trying another free programme, MusicBee (https://getmusicbee.com/) and have found it to work well after a few initial problems. It does everything that Winamp does and adds the ability to display the artwork, if it’s included in the metadata – which isn’t always the case. An alternative would be MediaGo (http://mediago.sony.com/enu/download), actually designed to work with the high-res digital Sony Walkman, but a useful programme in itself and operating very much like MusicBee. Klaus Jürgen Thies Dietrich Buxtehude und Bach Wenn jemand freiwillig 400 Kilometer zu Fuß zurücklegt, muss er schon ein besonderes Ziel haben. Von Johann Sebastian Bach, damals 20 Jahre alt und schon zwei Jahre als Organist in Arnstadt, hören wir, dass er im Herbst 1705 diese Strecke von Arnstadt nach Lübeck gewandert ist. Im „Nekrolog“, verfasst von seinem Sohn C. Ph. E. Bach und J. F. Agricola, einem Schüler von J. S. Bach, ist zu lesen: „[…] ihn [J. S. Bach] bewog ein besonders starker Trieb, den er hatte, so viel von guten Organisten, als ihm möglich war, zu hören, daß er, und zwar zu Fusse, eine Reise nach Lübek antrat, um den dasigen berühmten Organisten an der Marienkirche Diedrich Buxtehuden, zu behorchen. Er hielt sich daselbst nicht ohne Nutzen, fast ein vierteljahr auf, und kehrete alsdenn wieder nach Arnstadt zurück.“ Er hatte vier Wochen „Bildungsurlaub“ erhalten, blieb aber fast vier Monate fort. Auf die Frage „[…] wo er unlängst so lange geweßen?“ gab er die Antwort: „Er sey zu Lübeck geweßen umb daselbst ein und anderes in seiner Kunst zu begreiffen.“ So ist es aufgezeichnet im „Protokoll des Konsistori- ums Arnstadt, 21.2.1706“. Diese Fußreise Bachs zu Dietrich Buxtehude macht deutlich, wie groß das Ansehen Buxtehudes war. Auch andere Musiker wie Händel und Mattheson hatten sich schon auf die Reise nach Lübeck gemacht zu dem, der als die größte Kapazität der Musik im Norden Deutschlands und im ganzen Ostseeraum galt. Am 9. Mai 2007 jährte sich zum 300. Mal der Todestag von Dietrich Buxtehude. Aus diesem Anlass fanden in Lübeck und anderswo viele Konzerte und wissenschaftliche Veranstal- tungen statt. -

JAMES CATHEDRAL X SEATTLE X 26 JUNE 2020 X 6:30 PM X MUSICAL PRAYER Joseph Adam St. James Cathedral Director of Music & Cathedral Organist Resident Organist, Seattle Symphony Artist in Residence in Organ, University of Washington School of Music Prélude, Fugue, et Variation César Franck 1822–1890 The principal organ works of César Franck may only be twelve in number, but they occupy a large position in the development of organ repertoire in the 19th century. One of six pieces composed between 1856 and 1862, the Prélude, Fugue and Variation is a masterpiece of symmetrical tripartite form. Originally conceived for harmonium and piano, it reflects Franck’s complete mastery of all three keyboard instruments. In the opening Andantino cantabile a charming melody is heard on the oboe, accompanied by a background of Mendelssohn-like counterpoint. A brief Lento introduces a somber fugue, thoughtful and reflective in spite of its formal rigor. The melody of the Prélude returns, this time accompanied by a rippling garland and ending as quietly and simply as it began. Melodia, op. 59, no. 11 Max Reger 1873–1916 Max Reger is generally considered as the most important German composer for organ since Bach. A tireless worker, he was certainly the most prolific. Though this music certainly can be chromatically complex, it is firmly rooted in the traditions of functional harmony as a structural basis. Composed in 1901, the twelve pieces that comprise Reger’s Opus 59 were his first character pieces for the organ, and contain some of his best-known works. Melodia benefits in particular from the cathedral organs’ rich flutes and subtle dynamics, as well as the elegant acoustics of St.
