We have been planning the introduction of this magnificent reproduction as our May sampler of the month since early January, this debut reproduction from Sigrid and her husband. Sigrid’s superb skills are a joy to behold, and with the help of the tutorials, we, too, can embroider the exquisite wreath. Sarah Borton’s original sampler, the beautiful Left, a flower from the embroidered wreath that surrounds the antique above, is no longer on display in The verse. Here's what Sigrid and Torsten said about reproducing Sarah’s sampler: It was fascinating to delve into the sampler. We could see where Sarah had motivation, had a bad day, or did not want to work on her sampler. We were able to see where she has traced the design for the freehand embroidery on the old linen, and how she had decided to stitch certain leaves and flowers differently. We have shared a part of Sarah’s life through the reproduction. Sarah had fallen into oblivion during the course of the 200 years. I think she never thought of her work being reawakened. Everything is impermanent. When I stitch a Sampler it is part of my life withThe all memories. The reproduction of this beautiful 18th Century Scottish sampler is the second from HATS in collaboration with Sigrid and Torsten Eckel, and I'm so pleased to be able to showcase it here, since we are also featuring the Sarah Borton sampler, their first reproduction.

The stylized thistle border surrounds this unnamed sampler that features two reversed flower bands and two elaborate upper-case alphabets of solid cross-stitched centers surrounded by back-stitched curlicues.

As with all of HATS sampler charts, this 20-page chart is presented in booklet format in full color, and the chart comes with a comprehensive stitching guide and stitch diagrams, together with extensive historical information about the period the sampler was stitched in.

The sampler is charted for Au Ver A’Soie’s Soie d’Alger, and because the original sampler was done in wool, there is a conversion to Gentle Art’s Simply Wool on the HATS Website.

“Mary Lea 1793” from the Design Studios of Hands Across the Sea Samplers

It is with great pleasure that I announce that this stunning sampler reproduction, “Mary Lea 1793,” from The Design Studios of Hands Across the Sea Samplers, will be our 2017 Attic Stitch-Along. Mary embroidered this exquisite sampler when she was only 11 years old ~ the model shown here was beautifully executed by Jacqueline Morris. The model, left, will be on display at The Attic throughout 2017. At 373 x 445, it’s a sizable project, very doable in a year’s time. The model is stitched on Lakeside’s Vintage Meadow Rue with Au Ver A Soie’s Soie d’Alger. The overdyed silk conversion is shown on the next page.

Mary Lea’s sampler is bordered with lilies and carnations, is filled with wonderful motifs, a plethora of birds as well as several butterflies and squirrels, a sweet cat and dog on either side of the manor house. I love the touches of blue throughout the sampler, the two apple trees and other trees, and the tulips and other flowers. The sampler is cross stitch over two, satin stitch, with the verse and other words cross stitch over one. The verse: Great God with Wonder and with Praise Not all the Books on Earth beside On all thy Works I look Such heavenly Wonders tell But still thy Wisdom Power and Grace Then let me love my Bible more Shine brightest in thy Book And take a fresh Delight Here would I learn how Christ had dyed By Day to read these Wonders o’er The Attic, Mesa, AZ Toll-Free: 1.888.94-ATTIC (1.888.942.8842) www.atticneedlework.com

Ode to Jane ~ Here’s what Jackie says about how this pièce de résistance came to be: Many years ago I found this wonderful antique display desk - it was large - much too large for a lap desk. I needed to scale it down - so I contacted Mr Miller from Miller Carpentry Creations and asked him to take a look at the piece. He also was intrigued by the mechanics and shape of the piece. He asked me what size I would roughly need and I said abut 7 x 8 and cherry, please. Time passed and one day a superbly mini version arrived at my home. I could not wait to start working and creating times that would showcase this beautiful handcrafted desk. When thinking/dreaming of stitches and how bands of stitches flow into samplers, Jane Austen's use of words that weave into brilliant tapestry of stories come to mind. I was inspired to create my own tapestry of silken stitches as the desk's bottom Stitches that inspire, capture our essence of needle artists.

ELIZABETH HICKS 1745 ~ three great verses separated by floral and geometric pattern bands in cross and counted satin stitches. Elizabeth tells us that she “ended this sampler in the 14 year of her age July 20, 1745.” The verses are: Make much of precious Time while in your Power Be careful well to husband ev'ry hour: For Time Will come When you shall sore lament The unhappy Minutes that you have misspent *** If you desire to worship God aright First in the Morning pray, and last at Night. Crave for his Blessing on your Labours all. And in Distress for his Assistance call. *** Return the Kindness that you receive As far as your Ability gives leave: Nothing is more unmannerly and rude Than that vile Temper of Ingratitude.

ESTHER CHARLTON 1816 ~ Here’s what Marsha tells us about this sampler: This English sampler features imposing, symmetrical red brick mansion houses flanking Adam and Eve and the Tree of Life in the upper register. In the middle register "Solomon's Temple"-like structures flank potted flowers and a large stylized tulip popping from a cornucopia of blossoms. The lower register depicts a pastoral scene with a shepherd, shepherdess and their sheep. Esther finished her sampler when she was fourteen years old. The original sampler was stitched with fine wool on approximately 25 count linen. Instructions are provided for stitching the sampler with DMC cotton, AVAS silk, or Appleton crewel wools. On 25 count linen the finished sampler will most closely approximate the size of the original at 19-1/2" x 17". Only cross stitch is required to complete the sampler so it is suitable for any skill level. The chart and instructions have been printed in full color.

PALLA ~ Here is the information Marsha provides: This small textile originally made in the late 15th or early 16th century, is called a "palla" (chalice cover), stitched on a linen ground. The center show the face of Christ with a golden halo, framed by a narrow guilloche band and a large Latin inscription in Gothic lettering which translates as "Hail the holy face INRI the Redeemer." The Palla developed from the linen cloths on which the Eucharistic elements are placed, and were used as covers for a chalice; accordingly they are required by Church regulations to be made of linen. They took their present form in the 15th/16th century. The simple design of the Palla suggests it was not made professionally, but rather in a home or a nunnery, and may have been given as a donation to a church. The only stitches required to recreate this Palla are cross, and some back stitches to delineate the features of the face. The halo surrounding the face is executed with gold metallic thread. On 25 count linen, the Palla will measure approximately 9" x 8". We have hemstitched our model.

MOSES IN THE BULRUSHES ~ Marsha shares this information about this reproduction: This beautiful depiction of the Old Testament story was likely made in the late seventeenth or very early eighteenth century. The lively mix of Biblical story has been interpreted by the needleworker through her contemporary lens (note the rambling red brick late Tudor/early Stuart buildings and the fashionable clothing of the women, apart from their rather clumsy sandals) as they gather the baby from the river. The central picture may have derived from an engraving or a wood cut, perhaps even taken from a printed bible of the period. The facial and body expressions of the women, the baby with his "pixie" hat, the barque calmly sailing in the river beyond, reflect the humor and imagination of the young girl who embroidered this piece. On 35-count linen, the finished picture will measure approximately 12" x 14-1/2".

ROSE SHENAMON MITCHELL 1816, a Scottish sampler, with this information from Marsha: Rose's unusual middle name should have provided some clues about where she was born and where she lived, but the name "Shenamon" is elusive despite my efforts to discover its origins as well as hers. It is spelled many different ways when researched (including Shinimon and Schinnamon which suggest a Germanic origin, or perhaps even Hebrew). From the stylistic characteristics of her work, she was obviously schooled in Scotland in 1816 when she stitched this sampler. The "stacked" trees, family names and initials, illuminated letters, the arcaded floral bands across the top, the central motif depicting two birds drinking from the "fountain of eternal life" (so similar to the same motif on Jean Scrimgeowr's sampler of 1779, also reproduced by THE SCARLET LETTER), and of course the dominant red and green primary color scheme, suggest that this sampler was certainly made in Scotland. Stitches used in Rose's sampler include cross over one and two threads of linen, and double running stitch (back stitch). On 40-count linen, the reproduction The Attic, Mesa, AZ Toll-Free: 1.888.94-ATTIC (1.888.942.8842)will most closely approximate www.atticneedlework.com the size of the original sampler at 15" x 20-1/2".
