Timacum Minus in Moesia Superior—Centrality and Urbanism at a Roman Mining Settlement
land Article Timacum Minus in Moesia Superior—Centrality and Urbanism at a Roman Mining Settlement Lina Diers Institute for Classical Archaeology, University of Vienna, Franz-Klein-Gasse 1, 1190 Vienna, Austria; [email protected] Received: 16 September 2018; Accepted: 19 October 2018; Published: 22 October 2018 Abstract: When applying traditional criteria of Roman urbanism, several settlements in the province of Moesia are not recognised as parts of the urban network. To avoid this, previous criteria of urbanism should be revised. This paper suggests revisions, which provide a more inclusive definition of urbanism: Thus, instead of focusing on administrative status and monumentality as primary markers of urbanity and urbanization, development factors for agglomeration and centrality are emphasized as decisive conditions for, and characteristics of, urban settlement. To provide a case study for this theoretical outline, the upper-Moesian mining settlement of Timacum Minus is evaluated by ideas derived from a critical appreciation of Walter Christaller’s central place theory. Timacum Minus did not have official settlement status and monumental character, yet, it developed as a central place in the unique landscape of the Timok valley. This was due to its location as a central road station, military post, and settlement along the important interregional Timok valley road as well as the site hierarchy as the base of the centralized administration of the Timok valley mining district. Hence, Timacum Minus displays different levels of centrality. Interestingly, the site only held these properties during the Roman Principate, although its central location and mining activities also existed in pre-Roman and post-Roman times. -
The Traces of Roman Metallurgy in Eastern Serbia
Journal of Journal of Mining and Metallurgy 45 (2) B (2009) 187 - 196 Mining and Metallurgy THE TRACES OF ROMAN METALLURGY IN EASTERN SERBIA S. Petković # Institute of Archaeology, Belgrade, Serbia (Received 09 January 2009; accepted 28 February 2009) Abstract The archaeological traces of the Roman mining and metallurgy in eastern Serbia are rather frequent but insufficiently studied and published. Three mining-metallurgical regions abounding in gold, silver, copper, iron and lead could be distinguished there: 1. the upper course of the Pek river, metalla Pincensia, 2. the area between Bor, Zlot, Crna Reka and Rgotina and 3. the area in the river basin of Beli Timok, two latter ones had been organized as territoria metallorum. The archeometallurgical sites confirmed by investigations are: Kraku lu Jordan at the confluence of the Brodica river and the Pek river, Rudna Glava, Tilva Roš in Bor, Gamzigrad – Romuliana, Rgotina near Zaječar and Timacum Minus in the village Ravna near Knjaževac. Roman mining-metallurgical activities in eastern Serbia flourished from the end of the 3rd century, were interrupted by the invasion of Huns in AD 441. and restored in the time of emperors Anastasius and Justin I, in the end of the 5th – beginning of the 6th centuries. The Roman mining-metallurgical centers functioned in the 6th century until the Slav invasion in the beginning of the 7th century. Milena Golubovid Śe să auđe prӑ valje supt mundilji Rtanj zainteresovanost i informisanost stanovništva o vlaškom pismu i obrazovanju u okolini Rtnja Beograd, 2016. 0 Apstrakt Rad se bavi razmatranjem zainteresovanosti i informisanosti stanovništva o vlaškom pismu i obrazovanju u okolini Rtnja. -

The term “extinction” is the most often related to the recent appearance of de- mographic shrinkage and economic decline of villages. According to the last population census (2011), 13 settlements without permanent inhabitants have been recorded. The fact that about 1/3 of all settlements in rural Serbia is sparse- ly inhabited (less than 20 inh/km2) indicates that scales of demographic decline impacts are yet to be seen. The Spatial Plan of the Republic of Serbia (2010) advocates polycentric and balanced regional development. Creation of adequate instruments to mitigate demographic decline in rural areas requires clear defi- nition of regional territorial units. Are they going to be NUTS 3 level, or func- tional urban areas, as spatially and functionally integrated areas which represent more suitable choice for addressing the issue of demographic and economic decline, or should concrete answers be looked for at the level of identified rural 1 The paper is supported by Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Development, Republic of Serbia (Grant 47007). -

Inspection Report 23Rd MEN’S & WOMEN’S (Juniors, Seniors and Masters) BALKAN BODYBUILDING, FITNESS and BODY-FITNESS CHAMPIONSHIPS Zaječar, Serbia, May 9Th -11Th, 2014
Inspection Report 23rd MEN’S & WOMEN’S (Juniors, Seniors and Masters) BALKAN BODYBUILDING, FITNESS AND BODY-FITNESS CHAMPIONSHIPS Zaječar, Serbia, May 9th -11th, 2014. WELCOME: The President of Organizing Committee Mr. Saša Mirković and The Serbian Bodybuilding and Fitness Federation President, Mr. Goran Ivanović, invite all Balkan National Federations – members of the IFBB – to participate in the 23rd BALKAN MEN’S & WOMEN’S (Juniors, Seniors and Masters) BODYBUILDING, FITNESS AND BODY-FITNESS CHAMPIONSHIPS that will take place in Zaječar, Serbia from 9th to 11th of May 2014. Serbia has connected West with East for centuries – a land in which civilizations, cultures, faiths, climates and landscapes meet and mingle. It is located in the centre of the Balkan Peninsula, in southeastern Europe. The northern portion belongs to central Europe, but in terms of geography and climate it is also partly a Mediterranean country. Serbia is landlocked but as a Danube country it is connected to distant seas and oceans. Serbia is a crossroads of Europe and a geopolitically important territory. The international roads and railway lines, which run through the country’s river valleys, form the shortest link between Western Europe and the Middle East. From the agricultural regions of the Pannonia Plain in the north, across the fertile river valleys and orchard-covered hills of Šumadija, the landscape of Serbia continues southward, gradually giving way to mountains rich in canyons, gorges and caves, as well as well- preserved forests. Serbia’s beautiful mountains, national parks, rivers and lakes are the perfect location for an active outdoor holiday – from hunting and fishing to extreme sports. -
