This policy is designed not only to recognize heroic acts, but to reward those officers whose performance is outstanding and those who develop innovative and ingenious methods of furthering the goals and objectives of the Department. The purpose of the Meritorious Awards Program is to create criteria and procedure for recognition of commendable acts, acts of valor, the saving of human life, exceptional service, and outstanding achievements performed by members of the Department while in the service of the community. PROCEDURES I. Meritorious Awards Review Board Established A. The Department has established a system of recommendation and review for acts that fit the general criteria above. It is in the best interest of the Department that outstanding officers be recognized so that their accomplishments set an example for all to follow. It is the responsibility of each and every officer to bring such acts to the Department's attention through the recommendation process. B. It is the Department's responsibility to document each recommendation to assure that no act fitting the enumerated criteria goes unrewarded, and to maintain the integrity of the awards so that their value is not lost or demeaned. To that end, the Meritorious Award Review Board has been established. C. Those chosen to administer this program will not take this responsibility lightly; it is a serious task.

    THE MOST HONOURABLE ORDER OF THE BATH GCB / KCB / CB X - CB - 2020 PAGES: 59 UPDATED: 01 September 2020 Prepared by: Surgeon Captain John Blatherwick, CM, CStJ, OBC, CD, BSc, MD, FRCP(C), LLD (Hon) ===================================================================================================================== ===================================================================================================================== 1 THE MOST HONOURABLE ORDER OF THE BATH (GCB / KCB / CB) When the Most Illustrious Order of St. Patrick, National Order for Ireland was phased out with the death of the Duke of Gloucester in 1974, the Order of the Bath became the third highest Order of Chivalry. Merit and Service were to be the conditions for admission to this Order as opposed to most admissions to the Garter and Thistle being because of birth and nobility. The Order was founded in 1399 and probably took its name from the preparations for the knighthood ceremony where new knights would purify their inner souls by fasting, vigils and prayer, and then cleansing their body by immersing themselves in a bath. The Order was revived in 1725 as a military order with one class of Knights (K.B.). In 1815, the Order was enlarged to three classes: Knights Grand Cross (GCB) Knights Commander (KCB) Companions (CB) There was a civil division of the Knights Grand Cross while all others were to be military officers. In 1847, a civil division for all three classes was established with numbers set as follows: GCB 95 total 68 military 27 civil KCB 285 total 173 military 112 civil CB 1,498 total 943 military 555 civil The motto of the order is " Tria Juncta in Uno " (Three joined in one) which either refers to the three golden crowns within a golden circle worn on the badge, or the three crowns as symbolic of the Union of England, France and Scotland, or the Union of England, Scotland and Ireland or the Holy Trinity.

This is dependent upon maintaining a credible and realistic offer that earns and retains the trust of people in Defence.     THE CANADIAN HONOURS SYSTEM WEARING of ORDERS, DECORATIONS and MEDALS SEPTEMBER 2005 2 BUSINESS SUIT For daytime and evening functions of a less formal nature, such as Remembrance Day, Legion or Regimental gatherings, and some medals presentation ceremonies, guests may wear full-size medals with business suits or blazers.The invitation will indicate whether decorations should be worn. MEN Full-size insignia suspended from a medal bar are worn attached to the left side of the coat. Only one neck badge should be worn,suspended from a full- width ribbon. The ribbon is worn under the shirt collar so that the badge rests on the tie immediately below the knot. The stars of orders should not be worn with business suits. WOMEN When attending a day-time function at which men are wearing business suits, women should wear their full-size insignia, which are worn from a medal bar. Only one full-size neck badge should be worn either suspended from a ribbon around the neck or on a bow on the left side above the medal bar (see note below). The stars of orders should not be worn on these occasions. NOTE:Since 1997, women Companions and Officers of the Order of Canada may wear the full-size insignia either suspended from a ribbon around the neck or on a bow on the left side. If the dress or blouse has a collar, the badge is suspended from a full- or miniature-width ribbon under the collar.     Members’ etiquette – dress code, medals and badges (full article) What is the dress code for Legion members on formal parade occasions? Legion members should be appropriately dressed. There is a general consensus that ideally each member present should wear a dark suit/blazer [or for Women's Section a suit or dress, overcoat (if necessary), hat (preferably)], black shoes, etc. A person in a brightly coloured outfit on such a formal occasion seems somewhat out of place. When should men remove their hats during Legion events? The Patron has decided that, in view of the inclement weather frequently experienced at Legion parades many of which take place in the winter, hats will be removed only for the National Anthem, the Last Post and the Silence. What are the general rules for wearing medals? The following extract from our Ceremonial Handbook states: 'The official rules for wearing medals allow only official awards to be worn. Unofficial purchased medals and foreign medals which do not have the Sovereign's permission to be worn are not allowed. Standard Bearers, Parade Marshals and other officials on Legion duty are bound by this ruling and unofficial medals must not be worn when on Legion duty.' For men: The following notes are based on the 'Guide to the wearing of Orders, decorations, miniatures and medals' published by the Central Chancery of the Orders of Knighthood: · Medals are worn parallel to the ground just above the level of the top pocket of a jacket (or on a pocket insert). The Royal British Legion membership badge is worn on the lapel one inch above the medal bar.
