Whereas We are desirous of signifying Our appreciation of acts of valour, courage and devotion to duty performed by Officers and Men in Our Air Force and in the Air Forces of Our Self -governing Dominions beyond the Seas, We do hereby, for Us, Our heirs and successors, institute and create two decorations to be designated the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Force Cross, and two Medals, to be designated the Disti nguished Flying Medal and the Air Force Medal, and We do hereby direct that the following regulations shall be made governing the said Decorations and Medals: - Firstly. It is ordained that the Distinguished Flying Cross shall be granted only to such Offi cers and Warrant Officers of Our said Forces as shall be recommended to Us for an act or acts of valour, courage or devotion to duty performed whilst flying in active operations against the enemy. 12/19/2018 1953 New Year Honours 1953 New Year Honours The New Year Honours 1953 for the United Kingdom were announced on 30 December 1952,[1] to celebrate the year passed and mark the beginning of 1953. This was the first New Year Honours since the accession of Queen Elizabeth II. The Honours list is a list of people who have been awarded one of the various orders, decorations, and medals of the United Kingdom. Honours are split into classes ("orders") and are graded to distinguish different degrees of achievement or service, most medals are not graded. The awards are presented to the recipient in one of several investiture ceremonies at Buckingham Palace throughout the year by the Sovereign or her designated representative. The orders, medals and decorations are awarded by various honours committees which meet to discuss candidates identified by public or private bodies, by government departments or who are nominated by members of the public.[2] Depending on their roles, those people selected by committee are submitted to Ministers for their approval before being sent to the Sovereign for final The insignia of the Grand Cross of the approval. The cost of erecting memorials and associated projects is not usually met from public funds but from private donations or public subscription. Responsibility for the design of a memorial, its maintenance, protection and decision as to what it commemorates rests with the owner, or the organisation in which ownership is vested. In recent years the Government financially supported the construction of the Armed Forces Memorial, inscribed with the names of all those who have died while on duty since 1945. The Government also contributed to the costs of the opening ceremony of the Bomber Command memorial in London in 2012. -

UK armed forces Deaths: Operational deaths post World War II 3 September 1945 to 28 February 2021 Published 25 March 2021 This Official Statistic provides summary information on the number of in-service deaths among UK armed forces personnel which occurred as a result of a British, United Nations (UN) or North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) medal earning operation since World War II. This report is updated annually at the end of March and six weeks after the end of each medal earning operation. Key points and trends Since the end of World War II, 7,190 UK armed forces personnel have died as a result of operations in medal earning theatres. There have been no operational deaths since the previous publication. The largest number of deaths among UK armed forces personnel in one operation was the loss of 1,442 lives in Malaya. NATO or United Nations led operations in Cyprus, the Balkans, Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria are ongoing. As at 28 February 2021: - Four UK armed forces personnel have died as a result of operations in Cyprus (UNFICYP). - 72 UK armed forces personnel have died as a result of operations in the Balkans. - 457 UK armed forces personnel have died as a result of operations in Afghanistan. - Four UK armed forces personnel have died as a result of Operation SHADER. Three deaths occurred in Iraq and one in Cyprus.
