El-Hawagry Abstract Tachinid flies are an important group of parasitoids in their larval stage, and all their hosts are of the Arthropoda, almost exclusively other insects, including important insect pests in agriculture and forestry. All known Egyptian taxa of the family Tachinidae are systematically catalogued. Synonymies, type localities, type depositories, world distributions by biogeographic realm(s) and country, Egyptian localities, and dates of collection are provided. A total of 72 tachinid species belonging to 42 genera, 15 tribes, and 4 subfamilies has been treated. E-mail: [email protected] The thesis summary given below is based on my recently defended Ph.D. thesis entitled, “Effect of short-term sub- optimal temperature storage to assist large-scale production of two dipterans: Exorista larvarum (L.) and Bactrocera tryoni (Froggatt)”. This project was jointly administered by Alma Mater Studiorum Università di Bolo- gna (Italy) and Macquarie University (Sydney, Australia), with supervisors Prof. Maria Luisa Dindo (Bologna) and Prof. Phil Taylor (Sydney), and co-supervisor Dr. Fleur Ponton (Sydney). The thesis involved research on two dipterans: Exorista larvarum (L.) (Tachinidae) and Bactrocera tryoni (Frog- gatt) (Tephritidae). The focus below is on the tachinid, Exorista larvarum. Figure 1. Thesis summary The rearing of insects has long been essential for many different purposes (research, pest management, obtainment of products such as honey, etc.) and the development of efficient rearing techniques and their refinement continue to be sought. Cold storage is a technique adopted for prolonging the developmental time of insects and thus increasing the efficiency of insect rearing. The advantages of cold storage protocols include a more flexible rearing schedule, the possibility to overcome periods of low production and, in case of beneficial insects, the synchronization of field releases with pest outbreaks in pest management programs. -

This news- issue of The Tachinid Times. This is the largest issue of the letter accepts submissions on all aspects of tachinid biology newsletter since it began in 1988, so there still seems to be and systematics, but please keep in mind that this is not a a place between peer-reviewed journals and Internet blogs peer-reviewed journal and is mainly intended for shorter for a medium of this sort. This year’s issue has a diverse news items that are of special interest to persons involved assortment of articles, a few announcements, a listing of in tachinid research. Student submissions are particularly recent literature, and a mailing list of subscribers. The welcome, especially abstracts of theses and accounts of Announcements section is more sizable this year than usual studies in progress or about to begin. E-mail: [email protected] In June of 2017, the Field Meeting of the North American Dipterists Society (NADS) was held at the Lubrecht Experimental Forest in western Montana, U.S.A. NADS field meetings, held every two years, provide an opportu- nity for the Diptera research community to meet with their colleagues, collect flies in interesting locales, and learn about current research projects of participants during evening talks. Each meeting is held at a different field site in North America that provides access to a variety of habitats for collecting. An overview of the 2017 meeting in Montana, written by the organizer Andrew Fasbender, can be found in Fly Times issue 59 (Fasbender 2017). Here, we report on the tachinid fauna of the area collected by John Stireman, Jim O’Hara and Juan Manuel Perilla López (accompanied by fellow collector and oestroidiphile Greg Dahlem; see the four of us on the cover of this issue of The Tachinid Times). Mex. (n.s.) 84 (2001) 10. THE SPECIES DESCRIBED BY CARL EDUARD ADOLPH GERSTAECKER Carl Eduard Adolph Gerstaecker died on July 20, 1895 at Greifswald, at the age of 67. He was educated for the medical profession and took his degree, but devoted himself to zoology, especially to entomology. For many years he was keeper of the entomological department of the Berlin Natural History Museum and also a professor of zoology at the University of Berlin. About the year 1876, differences with the then director of the Berlin Museum induced him to resign his appointment in Berlin, and he subsequently accepted the professorship of Zoology at Greifswald, which he held until his death. Gerstaecker was an industrious and thorough worker in all departments of entomology. Among his principal works may be noted the “Arthropoda” in the “Handbuch der Zoologie” (1863) and the same phylum in Bronn´s “Klassen und Ordnungen der Tierreichs”. -

E. Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) collected from maize fields in Karnataka, India. The field survey conducted during 2018-19 revealed the occurrence of E. xanthaspis on the larvae of S. frugiperda with the parasitism rate of 1.85 to 4.55% in maize fields. In all, 22 species were recorded for the first time from Iran and 34 species from Fars province.
