1 Adult behaviour in two species of cerioidine flies, Primocerioides petri (Hervé-Bazin) and Ceriana japonica (Shiraki) (Diptera Syrphidae) Toshihide ICHIKAWA & Kenji ŌHARA [Abstract, captions of figs all in English] Introduction Most adult Diptera belonging to the Syrphidae are known to be diurnal pollinators which fly to the flowers of various seed plants and feed on nectar and pollen (1, 2, 3) Many different species have black-and-yellow or black-and-orange stripes and are thought to be simulating female adult Apoidea, which are the most important pollinators and have poisonous stings and similar body stripes (4, 5, 6). A tribe of the Syrphidae, Cerioidini, which we study in this paper, has body stripes similar to none of the Apoidea, but instead simulate Eumenidae or Polistinae, both belonging to the Vespoidea, which are generally called hunter wasps. The Cerioidini includes five genera (Ceriana Rafinesque 1815, Monoceromyia Shannon 1925, Polybiomyia Shannon 1925, Sphiximorpha Rondani 1850 and Primocerioides Shannon 1927) and 197 recorded species worldwide, but for only 19 of which are the life-style and development times known (7). In Japan three species of the Cerioidini are known: recent records of the capture of adult insects show that they occur in Honshū, Shikoku and Kyūshū. Observations of adult Monoceromyia pleuralis (Coquillett) are relatively frequent so it became clear that they visit Quercus acutissima and Ulmus, which exude tree-sap from May to September (8, 9, 10, 11). The lifestyle and life history of the other two species, Primocerioides petri (Hervè-Bazin) and Ceriana japonica (Shiraki), are not known, and so accidental encounters remain the only possibility. -

Yu. — Six additional species of hover fl ies of the subfamily Eristalinae are recorded from Ukraine for the fi rst time: Criorhina pachymera Egger, 1858, Hammerschmidtia ferruginea (Fallén, 1817), Melanogaster parumplicata (Loew, 1840), Orthonevra erythrogona (Malm, 1863), Sphiximorpha garibaldii Rondani, 1860, and Temnostoma angustistriatum Krivosheina, 2002. Distributions of these species are summarized and species diagnoses are provided. Updated key to males of the European species of the genus Melanogaster including a little-known M. jaroslavensis (Stackelberg, 1922) is proposed. Introduction Hammerschmidtia Schummel, 1834 is the last addition to the list of hover fl y genera of Ukraine, currently with 83 genera. In Europe, this genus is represented by two species, one of which, H. ingrica Stackelberg, 1952, was recorded in Europe only from the northeastern parts (Finland and Russia). Th e second species, H. ferru- ginea (Fallén, 1817), is widespread in Europe (Speight, 2018), but rare and local in many habitats (Rotheray et al., 2008). -

CHRISTIAN THOMPSON AbSTRACT A new species, Ceriana ponti (Cerioidini, Eristalinae, Syrphidae), is described and illustrated from burkina Faso. Keys to the Afrotropical genera of the tribe Cerioidini and the species of Ceriana are given. Keywords: Syrphidae, new species, burkina Faso INTRODUCTION Cerioidine flower flies are among the most spectacular flies, being high-fidelity (perfect) mimics of wasps (see Rotheray & Gilbert, 2011: 131–152). As such, they are rare in nature and poorly known. Some 197 species (235 names) have been described worldwide with more than a hundred known species waiting to be described. In the Afrotropical region, 34 species have been described. The first key (Hervé-bazin, 1913) to these species covered all the then known species (13), but the last key (Curran, 1938) covered only 17 of the then described species (23) and 11 species have been described since then. This is the first in a series of papers to revise the Afrotropical cerioidine fauna and lay the ground work for a revision of their high classification. Cerioidine flower flies were known to Linnaeus (1758) who placed them in his broad group, the genus Musca. Fabricius (1794) was first to recognize a separate group (Ceria) for these flies and later Rondani (1850) created another genus to accommodate the diversity of the European species and a separate subfamily for them. Shannon (1927) was the last to revise the classification of cerioidine flower flies and placed them into 9 genera and 9 non-typic subgenera. -
Syrphidae of Oklahoma (Diptera)
75 SYRPHIDAE OF OKLAHOMA (DIPTERA) Daniel A. Shorter and W. A. Drew Department of Biology, Northwestern Oklahoma State University, Alva, Oklahoma, and Department of Entomology, Oklahoma State University, Stillwater, Oklahoma Keys to the subfamilies, tribes, genera, and species of Oklahoma Syrphidae are presented. Some species not known to Oklahoma but likely to occur here are included. County distribtuion and seasonal data are also given for the species included. The flies of the family Syrphidae constitute one of the largest families of Diptera and are commonly collected in Oklahoma. Because of the large size of the family and the lack of current keys pertaining to the family as a whole for North America, this preliminary study is to provide keys for those persons interested in identifying Syrphidae collected in Oklahoma and to provide data regarding the distribution of Oklahoma Syrphidae. Synonymy is not presented since it is available in the current catalog on North American Diptera [Stone et al. (1)]. In genera that have just one species in the Oklahoma fauna the characteristics of the species are not presented, as also is the case with species that are very easily identified by the keys with no further descriptions needed. SYSTEMATICS Family SYRPHIDAE Characteristics: Small (3 to 8 mm), medium (8 to 15 mm), or large (more than 15 mm) flies, most of which have a false or spurious vein (vena spuria of European authors), extending longitudinally and slightly diagonally between the third (R4+5) and fourth (M1+2) longitudinal veins; spurious vein absent or nearly so in some Chrysogaster, Syritta, and Psilota, and in all Graptomyza (Asiatic and African genus), faint in others (e. -

The Syrphoidea (families Pipunculidae and Syrphidae) has been suggested to be the sister group of the Schizophora, the largest species radiation of true flies. A major challenge in dipterology is inferring the phylogenetic relationship between Syr- phoidea and Schizophora in order to understand the evolutionary history of flies. Using newly sequenced transcriptomic data of Syrphidae, Pipunculidae and closely related lineages, we were able to fully resolve phylogenetic relationships of Syrphoidea using a supermatrix approach with more than 1 million amino acid positions derived from 3145 genes, including 19 taxa across nine families. -

New hover fly (Diptera: Syrphidae) records from Georgia are provided as a result of field work conducted in 2018. At the same time, published syrphid records for the country are here reviewed and updated. A total of 357 species of hoverflies are now documented from Georgia, 40 of which are reported for the first time. Moreover, DNA barcodes were sequenced for 238 specimens, representing 74 species from this country.
