Passion... Poetry! Attack the world. Let’s do some damage. What a band. Four monsters of skin. My favorite rockers of the then time. John Doe - Mr. Handsome - of the deep rich voice, the hard, strong jaw, the angular bass stance and the hot/cool lyrics. Their harmonies - some would say Schoenberg - his partner Exene, of the wailing scream in the night, the clear eyed pinning of American failings, the fine words of Diana Bonebrake love and booze and madness in the midnight dawn of Los Angeles. “Johny Hit and Run Paulene...” and he’s got a sterilized hypo filled with a sex-machine drug, and he only has 24 hours to shoot all Paulenes between the legs. So get busy, boy. And he does. Listen to those words! That naughty, naughty Johny. I love ‘em. And Exene’s “The World’s a Mess, it’s in My Kiss.” I just love that crazy combination: World - Mess - Kiss. And Billy Zoom on guitar, or is that at least 3 or 4 guitars. How does he do it? It’s so massive, so sharp, so bright, so fucking LOUD!!! And he is so silver smooth and cool. Effortless fingering, impeccable on the frets. Doesn’t he ever make a mistake? Is he a flesh and blood Valhalla guitar god? Yeahhh! And who is that madman beating the living shit out those drums? Ladies and Gentleman... D.

    Chicago Blues Guitar

McKinley Morganfield (April 4, 1913 – April 30, 1983), known as Muddy WatersWaters, was an American blues musician, generally considered the Father of modern Chicago blues. Blues musicians Big Bill Morganfield and Larry "Mud Morganfield" Williams are his sons. A major inspiration for the British blues explosion in the 1960s, Muddy was ranked #17 in Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time. Although in his later years Muddy usually said that he was born in Rolling Fork, Mississippi in 1915, he was actually born at Jug's Corner in neighboring Issaquena County, Mississippi in 1913. Recent research has uncovered documentation showing that in the 1930s and 1940s he reported his birth year as 1913 on both his marriage license and musicians' union card. A 1955 interview in the Chicago Defender is the earliest claim of 1915 as his year of birth, which he continued to use in interviews from that point onward. The 1920 census lists him as five years old as of March 6, 1920, suggesting that his birth year may have been 1914. The Social Security Death Index, relying on the Social Security card application submitted after his move to Chicago in the mid '40s, lists him as being born April 4, 1915. His grandmother Della Grant raised him after his mother died shortly after his birth. His fondness for playing in mud earned him the nickname "Muddy" at an early age. He then changed it to "Muddy Water" and finally "Muddy Waters". He started out on harmonica but by age seventeen he was playing the guitar at parties emulating two blues artists who were extremely popular in the south, Son House and Robert Johnson.
  • Eric Clapton

    Eric Clapton

Iconic Album Deserves Far Better Than ThisBy TomContinuum Books' selection of The Gilded Palace of Sin for its 33 1/3 series is absolutely deserved. The album stands as a trailblazing standard of the "country-rock" genre and Gram Parson's finest effort. Unfortunately, author Bob Proehl doesn't come anywhere near doing justice to this iconic masterpiece. This is more of a brief history of the Flying Burrito Brothers than a close look at their debut album. There are no absolutely no details of the 1968 recording sessions. Proehl simply did not bother doing the necessary research. The album's producers, Henry Lewy and Larry Marks, aren't even mentioned. Neither can be found any reference to drummers Popeye Phillips or Eddie Hoh who played on five of the eleven tracks.

Grammy Museum® to Open Expanded Exhibit Celebrating 40 Years of Seminal L.A. Punk Band X

**MEDIA ALERT FOR FRIDAY, OCT. 13, 2017** GRAMMY MUSEUM® TO OPEN EXPANDED EXHIBIT CELEBRATING 40 YEARS OF SEMINAL L.A. PUNK BAND X X: 40 Years of Punk in Los Angeles Now Slated to Open Friday, Oct. 13 (Previously scheduled opening date was June 30, 2017) LOS ANGELES (June 22, 2017) — The GRAMMY Museum® is pleased to announce its plans to expand the forthcoming exhibit celebrating the 40th anniversary of seminal L.A. punk rock band X. Previously set to open on June 30, 2017, on the Museum’s fourth floor, X: 40 Years of Punk in Los Angeles will now be displayed on the second floor in the Museum’s Special Exhibits Gallery, opening Friday, Oct. 13, 2017. With more artifacts and space than previously planned, the exhibit will give visitors a glimpse into how X's four original members – Exene Cervenka, John Doe, Billy Zoom, and DJ Bonebrake – quickly established the band as one of the best in the first wave of L.A.'s flourishing punk scene. Items on display will include: • Original instruments and gear played by the band • Handwritten lyrics and notebooks by Exene Cervenka and John Doe • Clothing and other personal items • Original concert flyers for L.A. shows • Rare photographs and artwork by Exene • X: The Unheard Music film, and more! "We are so excited to be moving this exhibit to our main exhibits gallery, giving X, one of Los Angeles’ most influential punk rock bands, the recognition they deserve,” says GRAMMY Museum Executive Director Scott Goldman. "X played such an integral role in developing the West Coast punk movement, and we are excited to tell that story, now with even more artifacts and ephemera than previously planned." "When we were in the early stages of developing the exhibit, we knew what an important story we’d be telling, but we had no idea just how many photographs, artifacts, and other items we would have access to,” continues GRAMMY Museum Curator Nwaka Onwusa.

  • GRAM PARSONS LYRICS Compiled by Robin Dunn & Chrissie Van Varik

GRAM PARSONS LYRICS Compiled by Robin Dunn & Chrissie Van Varik

GRAM PARSONS LYRICS Compiled by Robin Dunn & Chrissie van Varik. As performed in principal recordings (or demos) by or with Gram Parsons or, in the case of Gram Parsons compositions, performed by others. Gram often varied, adapted or altered the lyrics to non-Parsons compositions; those listed here are as sung by him. Gram’s birth name was Ingram Cecil Connor III. However, ‘Gram Parsons’ is used throughout this document. Following his father’s suicide, Gram’s mother Avis subsequently married Robert Parsons, whose surname Gram adopted. Born Ingram Cecil Connor III, 5th November 1946 - 19th September 1973 and credited as being the founder of modern ‘country-rock’, Gram Parsons was hugely influenced by The Everly Brothers and included a number of their songs in his live and recorded repertoire – most famously ‘Love Hurts’, a truly wonderful rendition with a young Emmylou Harris. He also recorded ‘Brand New Heartache’ and ‘Sleepless Nights’ – also the title of a posthumous album – and very early, in 1967, ‘When Will I Be Loved’. Many would attest that ‘country-rock’ kicked off with The Everly Brothers, and in the late sixties the album Roots was a key and acknowledged influence, but that is not to deny Parsons huge role in developing it. Gram Parsons is best known for his work within the country genre but he also mixed blues, folk, and rock to create what he called “Cosmic American Music”. While he was alive, Gram Parsons was a cult figure that never sold many records but influenced countless fellow musicians, from the Rolling Stones to The Byrds.
