SALZBURG, ÖSTERREICH: Einmal im Jahr verleiht die Dachorganisation historischer Hotels in Europa, Heritage Hotels of Europe, ihre renommierten Auszeichnungen in sieben Kategorien. Dieses Jahr fand die glanzvolle Zeremonie in der ungarischen Botschaft in Wien statt. Die Jury, die sich aus internationalen Hotelgästen sowie Vertretern der Landesorganisationen historischer Hotels in Europa zusammensetzte, kürte Hotel Schloss Leopoldskron dieses Jahr zum zweiten Mal in Folge in der Kategorie „Heritage & Culture“. Located on the outskirts of Salzburg, Austria, the Schloss is a 20-minute walk from the center of the old city and about two miles each from the railway station and airport. It is seated on a spacious, private estate with a spectacular view of the Alps. Dating back to 1738, the palace has a colorful history. In 1918 it was acquired by Max Reinhardt. A co-founder of the Salzburg Festival, Reinhardt restored and renewed the palace, instilling the ambiance of creative productivity that characterizes it to this day.     SALZBURG SEMINAR SCHLOSS LEOPOLDSKRON HISTORY OF SCHLOSS LEOPOLDSKRON Schloss Leopoldskron was commissioned as a family estate in 1736 by the Prince Archbishop of Salzburg, Leopold Anton Freiherr von Firmian (1679-1744), a member of a Tyrolean noble family whose lineage can be traced back to 1185. The Scottish Benedictine monk Bernhard Stuart is regarded as Leopoldskrons master builder. The stucco work on the ceilings done by Johann Kleber are described as “the best example of rococo stucco the land can offer”. Leopold Firmian was a great lover of science and the arts, but is most remembered for his role in the expulsion of more than 22,000 Protestants from the Archbishopric of Salzburg. Leopold’s harsh actions were noticed all over Europe and both Salzburg’s economy and the reputation of the Firmian family suffered severely as a result. The commission of Schloss Leopoldskron was, in part, an attempt by the Archbishop to rescue the social standing of his family. Schloss Leopoldskron and Lake, A special law made the property an inalienable Watercolor, pen and ink drawing, possession of the family. Under its new name “Hotel Schloss Leopoldskron”, effective immediately this estate now offers 55 stylishly renovated rooms in the “Meierhof” as well as 12 spacious, historical suites in the palace itself. After a slow process spanning many years aimed at providing access to this estate for guests, the palace and its Meierhof have now opened their doors as a hotel.   • The Example of Michael Frayn's Afterlife
    Beatrix Hesse (Bamberg) Crossing Borders: The Example of Michael Frayn’s Afterlife This paper examines various types of Anglo-German theatrical transfer, using as an example Michael Frayn’s play Afterlife (2008). Afterlife describes the last twenty-three years in the life of German-Austrian director Max Reinhardt, employing Hugo von Hofmannsthal’s play Jedermann as its foil, since Frayn considers Reinhardt’s production of Jedermann as his major lasting achievement. In a first step, Afterlife is discussed in the context of Frayn’s trilogy of German history plays that also includes Copenhagen (1998) and Democracy (2003). In these plays, Frayn takes up the function of a cultural interpreter, introducing British audiences to German themes. The second part of this paper discusses Afterlife from the point of view of drama translation, since a substantial part of the play consists of translated passages from Jedermann. In the third section, Jedermann itself moves into the focus of investigation, since it is itself an instance of Anglo-German theatrical transfer, an adaptation of the fifteenth-century English morality play The Somonynge of Everyman. Finally, the essay considers the issue of theatrical re-appropriation in evidence in Frayn’s reversal of several of Hofmannsthal’s changes and innovations to the medieval model. Another aspect of theatrical re-appropriation is the 2011 translation of Afterlife into German, which reinstates Hofmannsthal’s verse and, in its afterword, questions some of Frayn’s central claims concerning the afterlife of Jedermann in the Salzburg Festival after 1945. Among contemporary British dramatists, Michael Frayn has shown a particularly pronounced and sustained interest in Germany and German themes.
