Heryno, M.Kom Direktorat Jenderal Pembelajaran dan Kemahasiswaan Kementerian Riset, Teknologi, dan Pendidikan Tinggi Republik Indonesia 2016 i KATA PENGANTAR Buku materi Mata Kuliah Wajib Umum (MKWU) Pendidikan Agama Buddha ini disusun sebagai panduan bagi mahasiswa yang mengikuti perkuliahan Pendidikan Agama Buddha di perguruan tinggi umum. Buku Pendidikan Agama Buddha untuk Perguruan Tinggi ini berisi 9 bab. Bab 1 dimulai dengan kerangka dan isi kitab suci Tripitaka beserta Sutra-Sutra Mahayana. Bab 2 membicarakan makna agama Buddha dan tujuan hidup umat Buddha. Bab 3 berisi tentang hukum-hukum universal agama Buddha. Bab 4 menjelaskan ketuhanan dalam agama Buddha. Bab 5 menjelaskan sila sebagai landasan dan pola hidup umat Buddha. Bab 6 menjelaskan iptek dan seni yang harmonis dengan ajaran agama Buddha serta sesuai dengan budaya nasional. Bab 7 menjelaskan masyarakat Buddha dan konstruksi kerukunan hidup beragama di Indonesia. Bab 8 menjelaskan budaya dan politik Buddha dalam kaitan dengan pergaulan dunia. Bab 9 menjelaskan pengembangan batin (bhavana). Terakhir, bagian kesimpulan memberikan ringkasan keseluruhan isi buku. Esensi yang terkandung dalam buku ini bukan hanya berisikan ilmu pengetahuan tentang agama Buddha saja, tetapi juga berisikan materi-materi untuk mengembangkan sikap spiritual, sikap sosial, dan keterampilan dalam membangun karakter mahasiswa sebagai kaum intelektual di Indonesia yang peduli terhadap masalah masyarakat, bangsa, dan negara. Materi pendidikan agama Buddha secara konsep membantu pelaksanaan program akademik yang berorientasi pada tercapainya sasaran pembelajaran yang berkualitas. Pendidikan yang dimaksud diharapkan dapat menghasilkan (a) lulusan yang memiliki kualitas intelektual, spiritual, dan kehandalan profesional, serta (b) memiliki komitmen moral dan kepeduliansosial. Mata kuliah Pendidikan Agama Buddha didesain sedemikian rupa sehingga dapat mencapai Kompetensi Inti 1 sampai 4 yang isinya merujuk pada esensi Tujuan Pendidikan Nasional (UU No. 20/2003), Tujuan Dikti (UU No. 12/2012), KKNI (Permendikbud 73/2013), dan SKL (Permendikbud SNPT). Selain itu, mata kuliah ini didesain untuk memenuhi kompetensi dasar yang dalam konteks KKNI sepadan dengan konsep dan posisi capaian belajar. ii Buku materi ini berhubungan dengan tujuan dan sasaran serta capaian dari perkuliahan Pendidikan Agama Buddha yang diharapkan. Dalam pada itu, materi disajikan dengan perubahan paradigma yang selama ini berbasis content based menuju paradigma process based. Demikian buku materi ini disusun sebagai bahan perkuliahan MKWU bagi mahasiswa yang mengikuti perkuliahan Pendidikan Agama Buddha di perguruan tinggi umum.     SYNOPSIS OF TARANATHA'S HISTORY Synopsis of chapters I - XIII was published in Vol. V, NO.3. Diacritical marks are not used; a standard transcription is followed. MRT CHAPTER XIV Events of the time of Brahmana Rahula King Chandrapala was the ruler of Aparantaka. He gave offerings to the Chaityas and the Sangha. A friend of the king, Indradhruva wrote the Aindra-vyakarana. During the reign of Chandrapala, Acharya Brahmana Rahulabhadra came to Nalanda. He took ordination from Venerable Krishna and stu­ died the Sravakapitaka. Some state that he was ordained by Rahula­ prabha and that Krishna was his teacher. He learnt the Sutras and the Tantras of Mahayana and preached the Madhyamika doctrines. There were at that time eight Madhyamika teachers, viz., Bhadantas Rahula­ garbha, Ghanasa and others. The Tantras were divided into three sections, Kriya (rites and rituals), Charya (practices) and Yoga (medi­ tation). The Tantric texts were Guhyasamaja, Buddhasamayayoga and Mayajala. Bhadanta Srilabha of Kashmir was a Hinayaist and propagated the Sautrantika doctrines. At this time appeared in Saketa Bhikshu Maha­ virya and in Varanasi Vaibhashika Mahabhadanta Buddhadeva. There were four other Bhandanta Dharmatrata, Ghoshaka, Vasumitra and Bu­ dhadeva. This Dharmatrata should not be confused with the author of Udanavarga, Dharmatrata; similarly this Vasumitra with two other Vasumitras, one being thr author of the Sastra-prakarana and the other of the Samayabhedoparachanachakra. [Translated into English by J. Masuda in Asia Major 1] In the eastern countries Odivisa and Bengal appeared Mantrayana along with many Vidyadharas. One of them was Sri Saraha or Mahabrahmana Rahula Brahmachari. At that time were composed the Mahayana Sutras except the Satasahasrika Prajnaparamita.

The Abhidhamma books; the last of which is the Katha-Vatthu, and the earliest probably the Puggala-Pannatti. This chronological table of early Buddhist; literature is too catechetical, too cut and dried, and too general to be accepted in spite of its suggestiveness as a sure guide to determination of the chronology of the Pali canonical texts. The Octades and the Patimokkha are mentioned by Rhys Davids as literary compilations representing the third stage in the order of chronology. The Pali title corresponding to his Octades is Atthakavagga, the Book of Eights. The Book of Eights, as we have it in the Mahaniddesa or in the fourth book of the Suttanipata, is composed of sixteen poetical discourses, only four of which, namely, (1.) Guhatthaka, (2) Dutthatthaka.

    EARLY BUDDHIST METAPHYSICS This book provides a philosophical account of the major doctrinal shift in the history of early Theravada tradition in India: the transition from the earliest stratum of Buddhist thought to the systematic and allegedly scholastic philosophy of the Pali Abhidhamma movement. Conceptual investigation into the development of Buddhist ideas is pursued, thus rendering the Buddha’s philosophical position more explicit and showing how and why his successors changed it. Entwining comparative philosophy and Buddhology, the author probes the Abhidhamma’s shift from an epistemologically oriented conceptual scheme to a metaphysical worldview that is based on the concept of dhamma. She does so in terms of the Aristotelian tradition and vis-à-vis modern philosophy, exploiting Western philo- sophical literature from Plato to contemporary texts in the fields of philosophy of mind and cultural criticism. This book not only demonstrates that a philosophical inquiry into the conceptual foundations of early Buddhism can enhance our understanding of what philosophy and religion are qua thought and religion; it also shows the value of fresh perspectives for traditional Buddhology.     The Dialogues of Ascetic andKing A king is a plenitude, an ascetic is nothing or wants to be nothing, and so people enjoy imagining a dialogue between these two archetypes. Here are a few examples, from Eastern and Western sources: Tradition has it from Diogenes Laertius that the philosopher Heraclitus was invited by Darius to visit his court. He refusedwith these words: "Hera­ clitus the Ephesian to King Darius, Son of Hystaspes: hail! All men are es­ tranged from the truth and seek vainglory. As fo r myself, I flee the vanities of palaces and will not go to Persia, contenting myself with my inconse­ quentiality, which is sufficientfo r me." In this letter-which is surely apocryphal, as there were eight centuries between the historian and the philosopher-there is, at firstglance, nothing more than Heraclitus' independence or misanthropy; the resentful pleasure of snubbing the invitation of a king and, moreover, of a king who is a fo r­ eigner. But beneath the trivial surface beats a dark opposition of symbols, and the magic in which the zero, the ascetic, may in some way equal or sur­ pass the infiniteking. This story is told in the ninth book of Diogenes Laertius' Lives of the Philosophers. The sixth book has another version, from sources unknown, whose protagonists are Alexanderand Diogenes the Cynic. The fo rmer had arrived in Corinth to lead the war against the Persians, and everyone had come out to see and welcome him.
