g October 2019 THE GANDHI CENTRE THE HAGUE Parkstraat 99 (First floor), 2514 JH, DEN HAAG The Gandhi Centre was set up on 2nd October, 2011 with primary objective of establishing, reviving and strengthening the cultural relations between India and Netherlands. The ICCR has set up such 36 Indian cultural centers in different parts of the world. The objective of the Gandhi Centre is to promote awareness of India's composite cultural heritage in The Netherlands. The activities of the cultural centre include showcasing various art forms of India such as dance, drama, music, films, talks and Seminars on subjects related to India. The centre also teaches Yoga, Music and Hindi.It has a rich library with books on History, Art, Culture, Political Affairs and Fiction.The Gandhi Centre functions under the Embassy of India and is established by the ICCR. 1 Programme Schedule You are cordially invited for the following: 2 Inauguration of the Exhibition of the Artworks of R.K. Laxman The Exhibition would be inaugurated by Ambassador of India Shri Venu Rajamony and Justice Shri Dalveer Bhandari. R. K. Laxman was a popular Indian cartoonist who created the daily comic strip You Said It, which chronicled Indian life and politics through the eyes of the “common man,” a simple man dressed in a dhoti and a distinctive checked coat was a silent observer. Laxman published numerous short stories, essays and travel articles, some of which were collected in The Distorted Mirror. He also wrote the novels The Hotel Riviera and The Messenger and an autobiography, The Tunnel of Time. In addition, numerous collections of Laxman’s cartoons were published. In 2005 he was awarded the Padma Vibhushan, India’s second highest civilian honour. Date : Friday, 4th October 2019 Time : 18 15 – 18 45hrs Venue: Auditorium 3 Talk on R.K. Laxman and his work by Dr. Dharmendra Bhandari Dr. Dharmendra Bhandari taught at the University of Rajasthan, Jaipur, from 1983 to 2002.He served as Consultant to the Joint Parliamentary Committee on the Securities Scam in 1994:95. He has undertaken several UNDP missions for the Governments of India, Egypt, Guyana, Jordan and Romania to promote foreign investments. He has also lectured extensively on investments by expatriate nationals at UNCTAD, Geneva; UNIDO, Vienna; UNDP, New York; and Harvard Law School, Massachusetts. He has also published several papers in national and international journals and has authored several books. Currently he is on the board of directors of JP Morgan Mutual Fund, SBI Capital Markets, Barclays Investments & Loans (India) Limited, Harmony for silvers Foundation,etc.. He has also been a director on the boards of Bank of Baroda, Dena Bank and Bank of Maharashtra, and served as institutional nominee director on behalf of ICICI, IDBI and UTI on the boards of prominent business houses such as the Tatas, Birlas and Singhanias. Dr. Bhandari earned his doctorate in commerce in 1982 and is also a Chartered accountant. Date : Saturday, 5th October 2019 Time : 17 00 – 18 00 hrs Venue: Auditorium 4 Sitar & Tabla Concert by Leo Vertunni & Dipak Chakraborty Leo Vertunni was Born in London in 1989. After growing up as a guitar player, Leo was initiated by Pt. Avaneendra Sheolikar to the sitar in the Imdadkhani style. He then furthered his training in the UK with Ust. Dharambir Singh and Ust. Mehboob Nadeem. At present, he is a disciple of Ust. Irshad Khan, torchbearer of the Imdadkhani gharānā and widely recognized as one of the greatest living sitar players. He performs extensively in Europe, tours regularly in the US and has also given concerts in Mexico, Colombia, Benin, Russia, China and India. Dipak Chakraborty was born in a family of music lovers. His talim has flourished under the guidance of Late Shri Ranjit Kumar Baruna and finally he came in contact with the Tabla wizard Ustad Sabir Khan.He belongs to great Farukhabad Gharana and also captured the style of other gharanas in the Indian Tabla Tradition. He is an empanelled artiste of ICCR,Govt of India.In the year 2004:2005 he was selected as international artist of the year to represent tabla worldwide by the government of India. Date : Saturday, 12th October 2019 Time : 17 00 – 18 00 hrs Venue: Auditorium 5 Madhubani Paintings Workshop by Mrinalini Kaur Sapra Mrinalini Kaur Sapra has been interested in Madhubani Painting since the age of 15 and has been practicing the art form. The workshop will explore geometric patterns and line drawing techniques. Madhubani art or Mithila painting was traditionally created by the women of various communities in the Mithila region of the Indian subcontinent. It originated from Madhubani district of Mithila region of Bihar. Madhubani is also a major export centre of these paintings. This painting as a form of wall art was practiced widely throughout the region; the more recent development of painting on paper and canvas mainly originated among the villages around Madhubani, and it is these latter developments that led to the term "Madhubani art" being used alongside "Mithila Painting." Madhubani paintings mostly depict people and their association with nature and scenes and deities from the ancient epics. Natural objects like the sun, the moon, and religious plants like tulsi are also widely painted, along with scenes from the royal court and social events like weddings. Generally, no space is left empty; the gaps are filled by paintings of flowers, animals, birds, and even geometric designs. Date : Saturday, 19th October 2019 Time : 16 00 – 1700 hrs Venue: Auditorium 6 Bharatanatyam Performance by Saanya Jain Saanya Jain is a student at O.P Jindal Global University's School of Liberal Arts and Humanities in International Business and Psychology. She is in Netherlands for a semester exchange program, studying at University College Utrecht, this fall. Her love for dance blossomed at the tender age of 4, for which she credits her mother. She has been learning the art of Bharatanatyam since the past 16 years now. She has also completed her Arangetram (first:ever solo debut performance) under the tutelage of the late Guru Jamuna Krishnan. Saanya has performed at several festivals across India and wishes to continue pursuing her passion for dance in the years to come. Its holistic approach whether for healthy individuals or for diseased ones remains unparalleled. Prevention of disease and promotion of health is the main aim of Ayurveda. "AYURVEDA’ in totality means ‘Science of life’. In 2016 the prime minister of India Hon. Shri Narendra Modi and the ministry of AYUSH launched the annual Ayurveda day. The young musician with her melodious voice kept the audience captive by singing the classical ragas, thumris and Bhajans. The trio did a splendid concert Prof. Nirmala Sharma, Director (TGC) felicitated the artists. Book release rd 23 September 2019 The Gandhi Centre Organized a Book release event of Shri Hriday Narayan Dikshit. The book authored by him “The Way India Thinks” is based on Indian Philosophy. The book was published by Shri Rajmohan of Acumen Publishers in the Netherlands. Shri Pradeep Kumar Dubey, Principal Secretary of UP Vidhan Sabha and Editor of the book gave remarks. Rajmohan and his crew gave a musical performance. Shri Venu Rajamony Ambassador of India released the book and felicitated the author. 10 Meet & Greet Roar Crew: Kerala To Cannes 24th September 2019 The Gandhi Centre organized a Meet & Greet Session with the Roar Crew. The Crew with Gautom Menon and Paul George set off on their Roar Trip from Kerala to Cannes across 25,000 kms, through 25 countries, in 65 days to raise money for conservation of tigers. The crew gave an interesting presentation on their motto which was then followed by a Question & Answer session from the audience. Prof. Nirmala Sharma, Director (TGC) felicitated the crew. 11 Regular Classes 12 The Gandhi Centre organizes regular classes in: • Yoga • Hindi Language • Tabla (Indian percussion instrument) These classes are open to each and every one at no cost. The classes are designed to cater to all age groups as well as from beginners to advanced.
