I thank him for keeping me happy, for keeping me sane, and for accompanying me on walks with the dog. ii Abstract Key words: Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG), Social Denial, Indigenous women, News Media Understood sociologically, denial is best conceptualized as a social practice. As a phenomenon, social denial refers to patterned behaviour where actors both know and do not-know about uncomfortable truths (Cohen, 2001). Put simply, social denial is a socially reproduced blindness in the face of traumatic events and processes. In opposition to social denial is a different social practice, bearing witness. Bearing witness is engaged when society’s actors give voice to those who would otherwise be silent. Drawing on theoretical frameworks from Stanley Cohen’s work States of Denial and Fujiko Kurasawa’s work Global Justice, this thesis aims to critically reflect and explore the registers and mechanisms of both social denial and bearing witness. The exploration of social denial is sociologically relevant, and generally important, as a means for understanding the role it plays in society, and to further understanding what social denial is and how it works. The better actors understand an issue the more capable they are of addressing it. This thesis conducts a media frame analysis of selected published articles from the National Post and the Globe and Mail that speak to the issue of MMIWG. This analysis reveals social denial through the frames “culpable victim”, “poster child”, and “the extra”; and bearing witness through the frame of the “honourable victim”. The analysis and research of this thesis reveal how social denial covers up the relevance of colonialism with respect to MMIWG. Furthermore, it suggests that social denial acts to both camouflage the gritty details underlying MMIWG and erase the identities of MMIWG. iii Table of Contents INTRODUCTION     ABSTRACT MEMORIALIZING INDIVIDUALS, SEEKING JUSTICE FOR COMMUNITIES: THE EPIDEMIC OF SYSTEMIC VIOLENCE AGAINST INDIGENOUS PEOPLES AND THE ROLE OF ART AND PUBLIC RESPONSE IN BRINGING ABOUT SOCIAL CHANGE By Amanda Ferris Frederico May, 2016 Director of Thesis: Dr. Jessica Bardill, Ph.D. DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH Indigenous peoples throughout the Americas are often targets of violence stemming from settler colonial societies that would position Indigenous peoples on the outskirts of mainstream, often Eurocentric societies. For Indigenous people, the systemic violence against them works to erase all Indigenous identities from dominant non-Indigenous societies. Even as Indigenous identities in general are targets of systemic violence, there are two subgroups within a larger Indigenous community that are targeted for violence more often than the overall Indigenous community –Indigenous women and those individuals who identify in ways that deviate from the dominant society’s preferred heteronormative and gender-binary identities. Queer Indigenous people and Indigenous women represent the minority of a minority who are hunted in an effort to erase their divergent identities entirely. Through the examination of prose, film, poetry and social movements, I will address the question of how these Indigenous peoples can begin to recover from this systematic violence against two of their subpopulations through the creation of memorials to the victims. Through memorialization, Indigenous populations return power and agency to these victims and continue a quest for justice that will offer psychological healing for victims, their families, and a larger Indigenous population. Through the process of memorializing the divergent and individual identities of these victims of sexuality, gender, and gender expression driven violence, art and social media begin the process of obtaining justice through rediscovering and revalidating these identities.

It has recently gained, and continues to gain, public awareness, and media have played an important role. A number of recent Canadian crime films have focused on MMIW and it is important to look at cinematic representations because they offer unique frames for viewing and interpreting the issue of MMIW. The research questioned how MMIW are represented as victims in four Canadian crime documentary films about MMIW. Employing a visual and narrative analysis, informed by the language of film, the research was conducted using a step-by-step viewing process, repeatedly watching the films, while watching for new details in each viewing. Your organization has received this guide to accompany the great work that you or your organization does in the Aboriginal community to help prevent violence against Aboriginal women and girls. In March, 2010 the Native Women’s Association of Canada (NWAC) released a report called “What Their Stories Tell Us”. The report was a culmination of research from the past five years of the Sisters In Spirit initiative and has provided evidence of more than 582 Aboriginal women and girls who have gone missing or been murdered in Canada. Over the past five years, Sisters In Spirit has also held a series of family gatherings which included some of the family members and relations of the 582 missing and murdered Aboriginal women to hear their recommendations and requirements for support and safety. One such gathering yielded the need for a CRG that would centralize most of the sources, programming and campaigns together for: friendships centres; community centres; teachers; educators; and, Aboriginal youth and women to use in violence prevention, advocacy, capacity building and promoting healthy relationships from an Aboriginal perspective.
