The purpose of this event workshop was for Indigenous people to share their international experiences from their respective global regions such as Canada, United States, Bolivia, Philippines, Brazil, Australia, Nicaragua, Ecuador, and Kenya.

The University of Ulster/INCORE research units hosted a two day ‘good practice’ showcasing the best practice in international community relations. The focus of the seminars were not to look at the what and where of violence against Aboriginal women but rather to highlight successful strategies such as the Sisters in Spirit initiative. International Mission of Verification (IVM) defending the Human Rights of Indigenous Peoples in Colombia. The purpose of this mission was to make visible the extremely disturbing Humanitarian crisis situation in the Indigenous regions of Colombia. The objective was to engage in direct dialogue with the people most impacted to determine high priority cases, define public ~ 35 ~ policies and plans of action, look at means of resistance and develop cooperation, support and commitments that will have a politically affect on an international scope. Recommendations and proposals will be developed from verified accounts of violations and attacks. The four regions that the IVM visited allowed the Indigenous people to bring forward their accounts of violations and attacks: massacres, kidnappings, forced disappearance, sex slavery, rape, fumigation, risks of distinction, loss of territory, destruction from megaproject, etc. The parallels to the current situation of Indigenous peoples in North America are striking. This event was designed to provide an unprecedented opportunity to promote the right of women and their families to adequate and equal housing, both nationally and internationally. I participated in the United Nations Regional Consultations on Women and the Right to Adequate Housing in North America as trainer and panelist. My presentation in the role of trainer focused on the use of international human rights laws and to raise public awareness of issues pertaining to Aboriginal women’s housing rights and to other rights in Canada.
