  • Micro Nation – Micro-Comedy
Giuffre: Micro Nation – Micro-Comedy MICRO NATION - MICRO-COMEDY Situation comedy and post-broadcast television Liz Giuffre University of Technology Sydney <[email protected]> Abstract This article considers how the concept of micronationality served as a launching pad for a broadcast comedy, the 2012 Australian television series, Micro Nation, set on the fictional island of Pullamawang. I argue that by setting the series within a fictional micronational environment, the creators were able to develop a distinct type of situation for the comedy, embedding the theme of relative size and isolation as a key aspect of the show’s content and utilising unusual production and broadcast techniques. The article’s analysis draws on literature from Television and Broadcast Studies, Island Studies and Genre Studies and reflects on the media representation of micronations more generally. Keywords Television; online television; comedy; micronations, Pullamawang Island Introduction Micro Nation is a short form Australian comedy series, set in a fictional micro- nation/state (see discussion below) first broadcast in 2012. Written by Andrew Garrick and funded by a grant issued as part of the national funding body, Screen Australia (through its ‘All Media Program’), the series consisted of 15 five minute episodes that were broadcast on week nights on digital television channel Eleven, and also made available online via the broadcast network’s website, Tenplay.com.au.1 The series also engaged directly with online audiences with the addition of production and story extras on the Tenplay.com.au site and the creation of a fictional Tumblr account for the micronation’s population, entitled The Pullamawang Tribune (2015).

Making comedy and making people laugh is the ultimate education. In the process of thinking about and creating a comic routine/show you use critical thinking, you engage with audiences as you try out those ideas. You write, you improvise, you consider intercultural understanding (different cultures can find different things funny…or not), and consider what might offend or be appropriate. You might want to satirise or subvert common understandings, you engage with BIG ideas and consider who you are in this crazy world. You make art and you perform art. But wait, there’s more…when you engage with comedy you actually have to think about your sense of self, your identity, who you are and what you have to say. You ask others to listen to your ideas and stories, you take risks, you build confidence, you dare to fail, dare to be brave, you laugh and you cry with laughter.

  • Hannah Gadsby: Celebrity Stand- Up, Trauma, and the Meta- Theatrics of Persona Construction
Persona Studies 2019, vol. 5, no. 2 HANNAH GADSBY: CELEBRITY STAND- UP, TRAUMA, AND THE META- THEATRICS OF PERSONA CONSTRUCTION MARY LUCKHURST ABSTRACT This essay examines the work of stand-up performer Hannah Gadsby in relation to persona, extending the conventional reach of persona studies to the realm of live performance and comedy. The author analyses Hannah Gadsby’s risky decision to kill off her widely adored comic persona in her 2017 show Nanette, replacing it with a persona that shot her to global celebrity and changed the power dynamics with her audiences. The essay investigates Gadsby’s contention that stand- up is bad for her mental health and is predicated on an abusive relationship with audiences. It considers her strategies of comic unmaking and remaking in the contexts of women working in a sexist industry within misogynist societies. It also interrogates Gadsby’s dramaturgies of foregrounding persona creation and the performative dialogic of ‘face’ or ‘mask.’ Gadsby’s postmodern deconstruction of her own comic artistry and her exposure of the limits of stand-up as a form are examined through a new concept of meta-persona. KEY WORDS Mask; Live Performance; Audience; Meta-persona; Gay Politics; Mental Health COMIC PERSONA In her now infamous show, Nanette, first performed in 2017, Hannah Gadsby staged the spectacular live execution of her much loved comic persona. She announced that she was quitting stand-up because it had been catastrophic for her mental health and was a form that encouraged a mutually abusive relationship between performer and audience. The ricochets from what has proved a brilliant and controversial act are still sounding, and Gadsby’s story provides an intriguing focal point for developing a new dialogue between persona studies and the disciplines of acting studies and comedy studies.
