All items were laundered, and repairs completed on site. Donated bags of clothing were washed and upcycled by the sewing room workers and given to those most in need, both children and adults.

From all of the above, we achieved positive training results and satisfaction from the prisoners that they had made a difference to those people in the community they may have offended.

Our Community Garden supplies the following local community groups; Ngāpuhi Aotearoa, North Point Mental Health Trust, Women’s Refuge, Aroha Trust, Ngāti Hine Health, Ngāti Hine Medical – Kawakawa, Teen Mums – Kaikohe, Kaikohe Budget Service. This includes prisoners released on probation who are struggling to find employment.

Appendix One - Department of Corrections (C118687) The 2019 year saw production surpass 4.9T of sustainable organically grown vegetables. These included potatoes, peruperu, broccoli, onions, cabbage, leeks, bok choy, taro leaves, carrots, silver beet, tomatoes and much more. When this produce leaves the site, a karakia blessing is given for all those who will receive the produce. Similarly, this blesses the men who have grown the produce. Paihere also gain top learning outcomes with National Riparian planting project Certificates.

NRCF nursery supplies various groups who are involved in Riparian Planting including Waitangi Trust & Sam Judd of Sustainable Coast. 2019 saw 30,000 plants leave NRCF, all natives which go to repair areas decimated either through ignorance or bad development practices. We have up to 17 organisations including schools involved in this planting. Auckland Ko Waitangi Te Awa Trust Planting project for Waitangi catchment Initially 50,000 native seedlings with potential for ongoing relationship. Goal is to restore ecological area and improve water quality to an area of immense Historical/Cultural value to NZ. Project in conjunction with Sam Judd and Sustainable Coastlines. However, this has a contract for provision of trees.

Appendix One - Department of Corrections (C118687) Howard League (Volunteer Te Reo (Basic to Intermediate Levels) Space) The provision of one-to-one/classroom (min 6) Te Reo support is being facilitated by two Howard League volunteers. Te Reo support promotes identity, culture, values, cooperation, community, and contributes towards reducing recidivism/reoffending. Auckland South Manurewa Marae – Te Mural project Paihere contributed concepts for the Corrections Facility Waiohua, Waikato, Ngāti Te mural, brushes, paints, buckets. Site Ata, Te Ākitai cultural adviser provided cultural support and assisted with linking the community project to mana whenua. One of these sites is Te Ruapekapeka Pā and battlefield, one of NZ’s top 20 iconic heritage sites. Whangarei CW have partnered with DOC and Te Ruapekapeka Trust to develop the site leading up to the 175th anniversary on 10 January 2021. The last battle between colonial soldiers and Ngapuhi forces led by Kawiti and Hone Heke took place on 10 January 1846. Ruapekapeka Pā is a well-preserved war site with battle features visible on the surface. According to DOC, the construction of Ruapekapeka Pā with tunnels, rifle pits and trenches was recognised in 2008 as a “masterpiece of military engineering” by the Institution of Professional Engineers of NZ. Over the years parts of the site have been turned into grass or overtaken by gorse. The plan is to return the site to as close to its natural state as possible by planting Waitangi Marae Waitangi River Trust eco-sourced species. New paths are planned from the battlefield tracing the route taken by troops attacking the Pā with education stations along the way Whangarei explaining the history.

Unitec - Te Noho Harakeke Kaitiaki New Lynn Community Work paihere Kotahitanga Marae attend Unitec Marae weekly every Friday where they are welcomed on to the site (pōwhiri) and are considered the kaitiaki of the Harakeke, Awa and Whenua of Unitec Marae.

As a part of the weekly sessions they learn the importance of taking care of the whenua and the importance of Pono, Tika and Aroha in everything they do.

“Whānau Manaaki Pā Harakeke Wānanga” provides access to wellbeing for participants whilst building their knowledge and skill capacity to undertake environmental work in their communities.

There are five key focus areas: Rangatiratanga – Authority and Responsibility to Te Reo Maori.

Central Region Prison Marae/hapū/organisation Project Additional info Waikeria Mangatoatoa Marae – Ngāti Puniu River Care Incorporated Paihere from Waikeria with Outside the Paretekawa/Maniapoto Wire (OTW) approval are engaged on a https://puniuinc.org/ community project to restore the Puniu Rāwhitiroa Marae – Ngāti River which flows past four Takihiku/Raukawa Maniapoto/Raukawa Marae: Mangatoatoa, Rāwhitiroa, Aotearoa and Whakamārama. A core value of Pūniu River Care is the responsibility to give back to the Marae by empowering staff (and paihere) to engage in the tikanga and kawa of each of the marae to ensure traditional practices are upheld.

Similarly, there is a horticulture nursery at Waikeria that grows eco- sourced seeds that are then planted in the local region in partnership with Pūniu River Care. Waikeria also has an OTW community work party that assists with maintaining the grounds at Mangatoatoa Marae.

Appendix One - Department of Corrections (C118687) The collaborative partnership between Waikeria and local marae/hapu is going from strength to strength with representation on the Kaumātua Roopu and Tangata Whenua Liaison Group (TWLG) which is a consultative group established specifically for the Waikeria build project. In addition to delivering cultural services, kaumātua also provided support as judges to the Mangatūtū Cup Kapahaka competition.

Proposal is to Pā Harakeke project– Ngāti source paihere from SHCF to assist with Apakura planting and ongoing maintenance of the site.

A proposal has been put forward by Ngāti Apakura to utilise SHCF construction workshop/paihere to construct a pā harakeke and rongoa garden for cultural harvesting. This includes three buildings for teaching weaving which will also act as an Education Centre.

Ngāti Tuwharetoa ki Iwi engagement Strong relationships with local Iwi Ngāti Kawerau Tūwharetoa, in particular Tūwharetoa ki Kawerau Hauora where we have established a collaborative approach when working alongside the people in our care managing AOD, MH, FV and accommodation issues. We regularly conduct meet and greets to maintain these relationships.

Appendix One - Department of Corrections (C118687) We are in the process of implementing a Work and Living Skills workshop that focusses on learning the history and cultural connections predominantly Mapou/Kokohinau/Ruaihona Community Work Project affiliated to Ngāti Tūwharetoa ki Kawerau. Marae Graeme Te Rire will be overseeing the sessions and comes with high stature within the iwi.

Opōtiki Local Kawerau marae are well supported by our CW teams where we provide Local marae, kohanga reo Community Work Project projects primarily focussed on restoration and schools and maintenance of the marae grounds and urupas.

In Opōtiki we provide significant support in Whakatāne terms of CW projects including general maintenance, gardening, urupā upkeep to Te Urutaumatua - Tūhoe Community Work Projects most local marae and Kohanga reo stretching from Opōtiki past Te Kaha. At the opening of the new Community Corrections office in July 2018, a Kuia gave a wero, (challenge) to Ara Poutama Aotearoa Senior Managers who were in attendance, to change the name to Raahui Pookeka, which is the name given to the area prior to the arrival of European people who disregarded the name already given by tangata whenua and renamed the area Huntly.

The name change signifies that we, Ara Waahi Marae - Ngāti Community Work Project Poutama, Aotearoa are open and willing to Kuiaarangi, Ngāti Mahuta, engage with hapū and iwi in a meaningful Ngāti Tai, Ngāti Whāwhākia way to work with the community to make Tauhei Marae – Ngāti a positive difference in peoples’ lives.
