Shi moga Distr ict was one of the first to be taken up. The inventory work was completed by May 1984. The report comes out with details regardin8 the area inventoried, the methodology adopted, processing of the results and 'the findings with regard to the forest resources. The survey reveals that 21.3% d the land area is under fGrests and about 9.6% of the actual tree ccvered forest area is made up of plantation. '!lith an average of 196 ste_ms per hectare the tDtal number of stems in the forest area of the district comes to 8~25,53,367. The volumetric growing stock in the inventoried area is 3.16~27 .611 M 3 per hectare. About 75% of the tree forest area is devoid of established regeneration which may be due to var ious biotic pressure~. The extent cf forest area containing bamboos is 1,93,57l~.4 ha with a stock of 7,16,103tonnes of green bambJo. An average of 3.699 tonnes of green bamboo per hectare is the stock positicn.

KUMARA2,3 AND MEWA SINGH2,4 1Accepted November 2006 2 Biopsychology Laboratory, University of Mysore, Mysore 570 006, Karnataka, India. 3Email: [email protected] 4Email: [email protected] During a study from November 2001 to July 2004 on ecology and status of wild mammals in Karnataka, we sighted 143 animals belonging to 11 species of small carnivores of about 17 species that are expected to occur in the state of Karnataka. The sighted species included Leopard Cat, Rustyspotted Cat, Jungle Cat, Small Indian Civet, Asian Palm Civet, Brown Palm Civet, Common Mongoose, Ruddy Mongoose, Stripe-necked Mongoose and unidentified species of Otters. Malabar Civet, Fishing Cat, Brown Mongoose, Nilgiri Marten, and Ratel were not sighted during this study. The Western Ghats alone account for thirteen species of small carnivores of which six are endemic. The sighting of Rustyspotted Cat is the first report from Karnataka. Habitat loss and hunting are the major threats for the small carnivore survival in nature. The Small Indian Civet is exploited for commercial purpose. Hunting technique varies from guns to specially devised traps, and hunting of all the small carnivore species is common in the State. Key words: Felidae, Viverridae, Herpestidae, Mustelidae, Karnataka, threats INTRODUCTION (Mukherjee 1989; Mudappa 2001; Rajamani et al. 2003; Mukherjee et al. 2004). Other than these studies, most of the Mammals of the families Felidae, Viverridae, information on these animals comes from anecdotes or sight Herpestidae, Mustelidae and Procyonidae are generally records, which no doubt, have significantly contributed in called small carnivores.

R*, Madhav Gadgil* Centre for Ecological Sciences, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore 560012, India Ph: 3600985 College of Forestry, Ponnampet, Kodagu 1.Current Status Karnataka has diversity of landscapes associated with biological and socio-cultural diversity. The physical geographical features have been largely responsible for the ecology and the cultural affinities of people with the biodiversity. The State can be broadly divided into 2 regions in terms of physical geography: Western Ghats and Eastern semi-arid plains. The secular and sacred cultural traditions linked with the biodiversity are more of a function of the physical geography of the region and the biodiversity supported by the geography and hence the climatic conditions. The Western Ghats is part of one of the megadiversity hot-spots in the world and harbour a range of cultural practices like sacred groves, sacred stretches of riverbeds, streambeds and tanks, sacred mangroves, sacred species of plants and animals. And historically it also supported totemism associated with the local people in the area. The Western Ghats consists of part of Uttara Kannada district, Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts. consists of the Uttara Kannada, Shimoga, Chikmagalur, Hassan and Kodagu districts. Locally the whole region comprising the West Coast and the Western Ghats is referred as Malnad. The sacred elements (SEs) in the Malnad region can be described as follows: The most common SE in this region is sacred grove (SG). But the SGs vary in terms of size, ownership patterns and also with respect to the vegetation.

, CHAPTER II HISTORY Prehistory pALAEOLITHIC remains found in the district have disclosed that man was resident in the area in those early times. In 1881, two early stone-age tools were discovered in a 'shingle bed' at Nyamati, at a short distance from the Tungabhadra river, in Honnali taluk. They were bifacial pebble-tools made of quartzite, one with a rounded working edge and the other with a pointed working edge.I Excavations carried out in 1965 at Hallur on the· bank of the Tungabhadra just on the other side of the border in Dharwar district revealed neolithic-chalcolithic remains. There was evidence of domestication of animals and agriculture. The site is considered to be of 1800 B. Crt. Later, neolithic sites were noticed in the terraces and at the foot of a granite hill called Guddemaradi on the bank of the Tunga river near Shimoga city, at Nilaskal near Nagar in Hosanagar taluk, where a megalithic site had been found earlier, and at the Kunda hill near Agumbe in Tirthahalli taluk. At Guddemaradi, some polished stone axes, ring stones and highly micaceous greyw;.tre pottery, and at the two other sites, only greyware potsherds and micaceous greyware pottery of l\1aski fabric respectively were discovered.S Another neolithic site was uncovered at Yedegudde near Tirthahalli. Some neolithic axes came to light at two other sites, namely, Ashokanagar (a hamlet of Yedehalli) and Anaveri in Bhadravati taluk. In 1974, another neolithic site discovered at N agasamudra in the same taluk, about six kms. from Anaveri, yielded neolithic axes and pottery.

Evaluation of Impact of Individual Land Development Activity undertaken under MGNREGA Department of Commissionerate of Rural Development Executive Summary Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) was set into operation in Karnataka in the year 2006 and under Phase-l, Bidar, Gulbarga, Raichur, Davanagere and Chitradurga districts were covered. The Act was extended to Belgaum, Bellary, Chickmaglur, Hassan, Shimoga and Kodagu districts under Phase-ll, and in Phase-III, all the remaining districts of Karnataka were also included. The primary objective of the scheme is to enhance employment security of rural poor by providing a minimum of 100 days of guaranteed wage employment in each financial year to every household with adults volunteering to do unskilled manual work. The guidelines for individual land development works provide scope to take up works pertaining to irrigation facilities, land development facilities, horticulture, afforestation, and other land development activities in the lands of individual beneficiaries which help the farmers to develop their own lands, enhance its productivity and develop rural economy. The Commissionerate of Rural Development and the Karnataka Evaluation Authority (KEA) intended to evaluate the working aspects of MGNREGA and study the impact of Land Development works taken up in individual beneficiaries land under the scheme during the financial years 2012-13 and 2013-14. Eight districts namely Tumkur, Shimoga, Chamarajanagar, Dakshina Kannada, Bidar, Koppal, Bijapur and Haveri were selected randomly as sample districts for the evaluation with indication to identify the sample taluks at the rate of one per district per year in such a way to cover all types of works and all types of beneficiaries with 10% random sampling.
