3 4 GUEST Of HONOR

Mary Ann Tighe Chief Executive Officer New York Tri-State Region, CBRE, Inc.

Mary Ann was also honored by the NYU Schack Institute of Real Estate with its Urban Leadership Award; she was the first woman to receive this award.

From a three-year term starting in January 2010, Mary Ann served as Chairman of the Real Estate Board of New York, the first woman to hold this position in REBNY’s 114-year history and the first broker in 30 years.

For her decades of dedication to the building community in New York and her contributions to the City’s transformation, Ms. Tighe is the recipient of the New York Building Congress 92nd Anniversary Leadership Award.

5 6 SPECIAL RECOGNITION

Metropolitan Transportation Authority Accepted by Thomas F. Prendergast Interim Executive Director; Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Nominee

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) is North America’s largest transportation network, serving a population of 14.9 million people in the 5,000-square-mile area fanning out from New York City through Long Island, southeastern New York State, and Connecticut. It drives the New York regional economy by providing countless job opportunities for millions. After work, the network enables commuters to get to leisure activities: music, theater, cultural events, sports, and shopping more varied than anywhere in the country.

MTA subways, buses, and railroads provide 2.63 billion trips each year to New Yorkers – the equivalent of about one in every three users of mass transit in the United States and two-thirds of the nation’s rail riders. MTA bridges and tunnels carry nearly 300 million vehicles a year – more than any bridge and tunnel authority in the nation.

In the days leading up to, and months following Superstorm Sandy, the authority worked closely with the Governor’s office, the Mayor’s office, and State and local Offices of Emergency Management to prepare for the storm and respond in a coordinated manner. The authority took extensive steps to protect assets prior to the arrival of Sandy and worked quickly to restore operations in the storm’s aftermath. Inspectors assessed damage to support immediate service restoration and identification of capital recovery needs. Most subway and commuter rail services were progressively reopened within the first week following the storm. “Bus bridges” shuttled customers between Manhattan and Brooklyn while initial subway service was being restored.

Over the past two decades, the MTA has committed some $72 billion to restore and improve the network so that today it runs at unprecedented levels of efficiency.

The authority is continuing its rebuilding and improvement efforts through the 2010-2014 Capital Program and has committed significant resources to the first substantial expansion of the network in 60 years, including Long Island Rail Road access to Grand Central, the first segment of a full-length Second Avenue subway, and the extension of the Number 7 line west from Times Square to the Javits Center.

Superstorm Sandy was an unprecedented natural disaster for the region. Employees at all MTA agencies worked diligently to restore and maintain high service and safety standards. It is for these reasons the MTA, under the leadership of Thomas F. Prendergast, is being given Special Recognition and enthusiastic appreciation by the New York Building Congress.

67 Mission Statement The New York Building Congress—a broad-based membership association celebrating its 92nd year—is committed to promoting the growth and success of the construction industry in New York City and its environs. The Building Congress provides a unique forum to advance an industry-wide agenda focusing on economic and infrastructure investment, job creation, and professional exchange. These goals require the dedicated involvement and cooperation of the contractors, architects, engineers, unions, real estate managers, developers, and owners who comprise the building community.

On behalf of over 400 constituent organizations comprising more than 250,000 skilled tradespeople and professionals, the Building Congress supports sound public policy, promotes productive capital spending, encourages public/private partnerships, and evaluates the implementation of major government projects.

To foster relationships and cooperation, the Building Congress sponsors consensus- building activities and encourages a free exchange of ideas among leaders of industry associations, businesses, and the public sector. The Building Congress promotes competence and productivity in the workplace, with special emphasis on public service, teamwork, and partnership with government. Members are encouraged to conduct business with honesty, integrity, and a spirit of fair competition.
