• The Club have achieved@AshleyRMarch excellent results in the 2019/20 Premier@AshleyRMarch League season, and as it stands are 7th in the Table after 28 games/AshleyMarch8 played, on 43 points. 16 points clear of/AshleyMarch8 relegation. • In every competitive fixture this season, the Club have used a 3-5-2 starting formation (28 Premier League, 2 EFL Cup, 3 FA Cup - 33 in total). • From the statistics, it is clear the Club have relied on three Central Defenders for the majority of the season - O’Connell (5), Basham (6) & Egan (12). • O’Connell (5) and Egan (12) both have long-term contracts (2023 & 2022 respectively), and are both of an age @AshleyRMarch where they will be able to play for years to come (26 & 27). Whereas Basham (6) is 31 years old and@AshleyRMarch his contract /AshleyMarch8 expires in 2021. /AshleyMarch8 • Other Central Defender options: A. Jagielka (15) has been used sparingly, and is out of contract at the end of the 2019/20 season. It is unlikely his contract will be renewed@AshleyRMarch taking into account his age. B. Bryan (20) has also been used sparingly, and was sent on Loan to Bolton until the end of the 2019/20 season, where he has failed to/AshleyMarch8 impress so far. C. Retsos (29) was signed on Loan in January 2020 until the end of the 2019/20 season, where he will return to Bayer 04 Leverkusen. He is yet to make an appearance for the Club. • It is clear that the Club@AshleyRMarch will need to recruit a Central Defender@AshleyRMarch moving forward, especially if they wish to continue to use 3 Central Defenders/AshleyMarch8 in their System of Play. /AshleyMarch8 • The aim of this report was to identify suitable Central Defenders for recruitment in the 2020 Summer Transfer Window. Players were identified from clubs across Europe, and not within the UK. • For the purpose of this report, players identified for recruitment were considered to be a part of a Premier League squad for the 2020/21 Season. • The criteria for the players was set as follows: @AshleyRMarchA. To be recruited as an investment for the Club, but must also be direct competition@AshleyRMarch for the First Team. /AshleyMarch8B. Ability to play in a 3-man Defence, and as a Right sided Central Defender - Leading/AshleyMarch8 Foot: Right. C. No restriction on Nationality, but must be recruited from a European Club/League. D. Age profile was no older than 25 years old. E. Transfer fee of approximately £10,000,000-£20,000,000, therefore the player had to have a Market Value of no more than £10,000,000.@AshleyRMarch F. Technical: • Very good ball control, looked composed receiving the ball in all scenarios. Ran with the ball well, but mostly helped build attacks through distribution. • Passing short was always very accurate, with good technique. Long passing was also good, but slightly less consistent and occasionally too slow, allowing opposition to block distribution. Played long passes@AshleyRMarch into good areas, and cleared the ball from@AshleyRMarch danger well with long balls directed towards the forward. Also must be noted that he utilised a powerful/AshleyMarch8 long throw on occasions to help his team attack/AshleyMarch8 in wide areas. • Made some very good standing tackles in dangerous situations. When he attempted to tackle opponent, he was very successful in winning possession. • Defended very well 1v1 for the majority of the game, pressing opposition players high and aggressively, delaying opponents and choosing when to attempt tackles. Has been marked down due to two reasons. Firstly, for opposition goal he was defending 1v1, and delaying, his footwork let him down as opponent was able to beat him 1v1 and score past goalkeeper. Other reason was that in second half there were a number of occasions where he was unable to block dangerous crosses from wide areas. At times he did make very good blocks, but others he wasn’t close enough to prevent the cross. • Battled@AshleyRMarch all game for aerial duels, showing commitment and good heading ability when he was called upon. Also looked a threat in opposition@AshleyRMarch box attacking set/AshleyMarch8 plays. /AshleyMarch8 Tactical: • Showed some attacking intent in open play joining attacks to maintain possession in final third. Also made good movements when attacking set plays, looked a threat. @AshleyRMarch • Very good defensive awareness throughout the game. Even though he made some errors in technical execution of defensive duties as mentioned, his positioning and reaction to dealing with attacking threats was excellent./AshleyMarch8 He got into great positions to cut out loose passes, tracked players effectively to make tackles, and also timed his pressing high down right side very well. The last point made it difficult for the opposition to progress possession down their left side, particularly in the first half. • Movement off the ball was very good, to get into defensive positions and to join attacking play. • Showed excellent team understanding cover and@AshleyRMarch press as part of the defensive unit. Clearly@AshleyRMarch had instruction to press individuals high, as well as usual Right Central Defender duties. Demonstrated the awareness/AshleyMarch8 to perform his duties very well. /AshleyMarch8

Psychological & Social: • Demonstrated a high level of desire with concentration and control throughout the game. Looked confident in his game and his role in the team. Showed a good reaction to defensive error for opposition goal - it didn’t prevent him whatsoever from defending with confidence - even against player who scored. • Communicated excellently with his team mates. Whether it was with the goalkeeper to slow distribution down, or demanding more movement from the Right Midfield@AshleyRMarch player as examples. @AshleyRMarch • Made lots of good/AshleyMarch8 decisions, certainly with his defensive awareness, to help the team. Lead by example and worked hard/AshleyMarch8 for the team and the defensive unit. Showed unity with his team mates.

Physical: • Showed very good body strength in physical battles with opposition@AshleyRMarch from set plays. He showed a very good work rate. • Speed was good to join attacking play, and deal with attacking threats/AshleyMarch8 eﬀectively. As well as recovering at good speed from broken down attacks. • Showed excellent mobility for the duration of the game, to fulﬁl his role in the team. Along with very good agility in reaction to dealing with attacking threats.

Overview: He put in a very good defensive performance, in what was an intense and end to end game. He did make a key error 1v1 which lead to opposition goal, but his inﬂuence on the team and performance around this error was very strong. Tactically, positioned himself very well, pressed eﬀectively, and worked very well as part of the defensive unit. Also showed desirable Psych/Social traits, with good physical capabilities.

Technical: • Looked comfortable and composed on the ball@AshleyRMarch and when receiving the ball under pressure.@AshleyRMarch Secure first touch. Shown with both his feet and chest. • Rarely ran with the ball, but when he did, he was effective in moving possession forwards. • Good passing techniques shown over short and/AshleyMarch8 long distances, whether it was short build/AshleyMarch8 up play or longer passes to team mates in good attacking positions. Very rarely lost possession, and helped his team build effective attacks with his distribution. Can pass off both feet, more precisely with right. • Defended very well 1v1 - tracked runners and timed tackles excellently, pressurised opposing players effectively to prevent them playing forward, and also blocked shots to prevent goals on two occasions. Opposition players found it very difficult to beat him 1v1. • Dominated the majority of aerial duels, successfully clearing dangerous long balls.

Tactical:@AshleyRMarch @AshleyRMarch • Showed/AshleyMarch8 a good attacking awareness in distribution to players in final third. Supported play effectively from behind to build effective attacks./AshleyMarch8 Stepped into attacking play on occasion to support an attack, good strike (on target) from distance in first half. Showed further attacking threat late in the game to try help team push for equaliser. • Defensive awareness was very good. Timed tackles very well, tracked runners from set plays and open play effectively, showed clever delay tactics to slow down dangerous attacks. On two occasions was caught out of position@AshleyRMarch by engaging either too high or at wrong moment, but was spot on every other time. • Movement off the ball was good in both attacking and defending play./AshleyMarch8 Showed a solid understanding of his role and responsibilities in the team as part of a back three, and as part of a back four when the team changed formation in the second half.

Psychological & Social: • Showed a desire to fight and win for his team.@AshleyRMarch Was very much in control of his game and confident@AshleyRMarch in his play throughout. Showed leadership in defence. • Communication was good with team mates, encouraged good defending play and supported team mates in attacking play by suggesting best attacking options. /AshleyMarch8 /AshleyMarch8 • Made lots of good decisions on and off the ball, whether it was to defend effectively 1v1, or covering spaces vacated by defensive team mates as examples.

Physical: • Body strength@AshleyRMarch was good, but on occasion was shrugged oﬀ the ball later in the game. @AshleyRMarch • Speed was also good, used pace to catch up with attacking threats when they ran in behind. Could have been faster to deal with these threats without going to ground./AshleyMarch8 /AshleyMarch8 • Overall, good mobility and agility to defend and attack eﬀectively for the duration of the game. Very good work rate.

Overview: A very good performance as a Right Central Defender, ﬁrstly as part of a@AshleyRMarch three-man defence, and later in a four-man defence. Was calm and composed in all situations, showing some good technical/AshleyMarch8 ability on the ball, and very good defensive awareness. Psychologically, showed desirable traits as a Central Defender, and also has good Physical traits to play at the highest level.

Technical: • Showed good ball control throughout, composed@AshleyRMarch in possession. Didn’t often run with the ball,@AshleyRMarch on occasions he did he showed good technique but was unable to beat opposition players 1v1. • Passing short was good, although usually sidewards/backwards/AshleyMarch8 and secure. Could have done/AshleyMarch8 more to pass with penetration over both short and long distances. Very rarely passed over long distances, choosing short options instead. • Very good in defending 1v1, pressing aggressively in wide areas to either force mistakes or tackle and win possession. Was difficult for opposition to beat him 1v1. Blocked crosses well. • Competed well for aerial duels without always heading the ball - preventing opposition from winning header. When he did head the ball, he showed good technique. Good man-marking for defensive set plays, and looked a threat attacking set plays. @AshleyRMarch @AshleyRMarch Tactical:/AshleyMarch8 /AshleyMarch8 • Very good attacking awareness, got into good positions to support attacks from behind down the left side. Was then able to recycle and keep attacks moving for the team. Clever movements on set plays, was a threat. • With his high positioning in attacking play, he was also aware of possibilities to aggressively counter-press to regain possession high up the pitch for his team with a tackle or the opposition making an error. His positioning@AshleyRMarch was also very good in his own half as part of the defensive unit, the opposition failed to drag him out of position, he remained compact. He sensed dangers/AshleyMarch8 and covered for his team mates, and he tracked runs and remained goal side effectively to deal with crosses. Further, he made a crucial clearance through his awareness in second phase of free-kick, which if he had not cleared, would have given the opposition a clear goal scoring opportunity. • Movement off the ball was very effective both offensively and defensively. Understood and executed his role in the team very well. @AshleyRMarch @AshleyRMarch Psychological & Social: • Was very competitive. Showed good reaction/AshleyMarch8 to defensive duties as his team lost possession/AshleyMarch8 of the ball through counter-press and recovery runs. • Communicated well with his defensive unit throughout. • Remained concentrated in control of his game, and played with confidence. • Made many good decisions through his awareness, particularly in defensive and defensive-transition scenarios. Worked hard for the team.

Physical: • Showed very good@AshleyRMarch body strength in physical duels both on the floor and in the air. Drew fouls by competing physically. @AshleyRMarch • Speed of recovery/AshleyMarch8 was very good. He was able to support attacks and defend effectively by his speed of movement. Very/AshleyMarch8 good mobility and agility. • Worked very hard physically to perform effectively for the team.

Overview: A disappointing result for his team, but his performance was very good @AshleyRMarchwithin it. Showed excellent defensive awareness, and competitiveness to win duels. Was very mobile to support attacking play and defend eﬀectively, especially/AshleyMarch8 in defensive transitions. Technical: • Very good ball control, composed with the ball at his feet. Happy to receive under pressure and play. Very rarely ran with the ball, but on occasions he did, he ran with composure and effectively. • Short and long passing were overall good, but@AshleyRMarch did make poor error in second half with short@AshleyRMarch pass into midfield. Opposition forward blocked the pass, and set up dangerous attack as a result of error. /AshleyMarch8 /AshleyMarch8 • Made some good tackles as he pressurised players receiving the ball 1v1. Looked comfortable defending these scenarios centrally. However, looked uncomfortable in wide areas. Was beaten on a number of occasions by quick forward play in behind him in wide area/right half-space channel. His eagerness to win the ball in front of him helped win some 1v1 scenarios, but also lead to him being exposed in behind in others and cautioned for fouling. Further, on occasions he did stand off opposition forwards, he failed to block some crosses from wide areas by not closing down enough. Overall, an inconsistent performance defensively 1v1. • Showed@AshleyRMarch good defensive heading technique, and battled well for aerial duels from set plays. Good movement and threat from attacking@AshleyRMarch set plays too. /AshleyMarch8 /AshleyMarch8 Tactical: • Okay attacking awareness. Regularly passed short and allowed others to build attacks. Didn’t cause opposition many problems defensively. • Some very good anticipation to defend potential threats, intercept passes and block shots. Although did also make some errors in his judgement, in particular leaving too much space in behind for opposition to exploit@AshleyRMarch with through balls. Also didn’t always get into best defensive position to defend low driven crosses - allowing opposition forwards to run in front of him and pose a threat to goal. • Movement off the ball was generally good, and he showed a good team/AshleyMarch8 understanding in his positioning as a Right Central Defender.

Psychological & Social: • Showed a good competitiveness in his game, with good confidence. • Communication and leadership were okay. He@AshleyRMarch certainly could have done more to support his@AshleyRMarch team in defending effectively in his communication with the defensive and midfield unit. /AshleyMarch8 /AshleyMarch8 • Made some good decisions, but also made some poor judgements throughout the game, as previously explained. Lost a bit of control in his cautioned offence, and concentration seemed to dip in some of his errors.

Physical: • Was unable to dominate physical duels with body strength, sometimes being overpowered by opposition players. Could certainly work on strength to help him win physical@AshleyRMarch duels. @AshleyRMarch • Showed good/AshleyMarch8 speed, particularly in his recovery from broken down open and set plays in the ﬁnal third. Very good mobility/AshleyMarch8 for the duration of the game, with good agility too. • Good work rate for the duration of the game.

Overview: @AshleyRMarch Overall, an unconvincing performance. Initially, his defensive judgements were very good and he seemed comfortable defending on the front foot and dealing with opposition threats. As the game progressed and he was tested further/AshleyMarch8 by opposition forwards, he struggled to deal with speed and strength of play - especially when dealing with threats in wide areas and in the right half-space channel. There were a number of occasions he was exposed. He also made errors in his positioning which would have resulted in goals for the opposition later in the game. Good technical ability, and certainly mobility with good speed to defend eﬀectively. Further areas needed for improvement in his physical strength and communication/leadership.

Technical: • Good ball control, was always willing to receive the ball and showed a good first touch. • Run effectively with the ball into midfield to help@AshleyRMarch build possession and initiate attacks. @AshleyRMarch • Majority of short passing was secure and effective,/AshleyMarch8 very rarely forward - he regularly chose/AshleyMarch8 to play to team mates either side or run with the ball instead of breaking lines with short passes. • Long passing was inconsistent. On occasions played longer passes into good areas to be contested, but other occasions executed poorly, losing possession. When he decided to clear danger with long balls, he was also inconsistent with this executions. • Defended well 1v1, as a Sweeper in a three-man defence. As the spare defender, would usually man-mark opposition, and did so effectively regularly. Rarely made tackles, but was dragged into wide areas on occasion where he tackled and blocked effectively. • Was unable to dominate aerial duels. On some occasions would win the battle and clear danger, but other occasions was overrun. Clear example of this from@AshleyRMarch set play where lost marker in physical battle, who scored direct from corner with headed goal. When he did when aerial duels, he @AshleyRMarchshowed good heading/AshleyMarch8 technical ability. /AshleyMarch8

Tactical: • Showed all round good attacking and defensive awareness. Assessed moments to step out of defence with ball and probe attacking play. He demonstrated good defensive awareness in his positioning, and his tracking/marking@AshleyRMarch of attacking threats. • Movement off the ball was good, effectively positioning himself to either/AshleyMarch8 be an outlet in build up play, or when defending effectively behind his Defensive unit team mates. • Showed good understanding and awareness of the formation and his role in the unit, giving balance to his team throughout the game. Psychological & Social: @AshleyRMarch @AshleyRMarch • Was competitive in his play, with good confidence./AshleyMarch8 /AshleyMarch8 • Worked well as part of the defensive unit, and made good decisions certainly in defensive scenarios. • Communicated well with team mates. Shown particularly when pressurising opposition players and forcing play, or recovering from attacking set plays. • Good work rate put in for the duration of the game.

Overview: @AshleyRMarch Technically, a good performance other than his inconsistent long distribution./AshleyMarch8 Could have imposed himself more on the game in an attacking way with effective long passes to break opposition lines of defence. Showed good tactical understanding in the teams system, and defended effectively with his movement off the ball and positioning. Clear weakness was his ability to dominate aerial duels. For the majority of aerial play, his team mates in defence challenged for the ball - I’m not sure he could regularly win these types of duels as a Right Central Defender.

Timed tackles very well - both standing and sliding. • Defended well 1v1, especially when opponents received with their back to goal - either tackling or effectively forcing play backwards. However on some occasions where opponents were facing the goal, he would stand off too much when delaying attacks, giving too much space for crosses or other forward play. • Competed@AshleyRMarch well for aerial duels, showing good defensive heading technique to clear dangers from open play. @AshleyRMarch /AshleyMarch8 /AshleyMarch8 Tactical: • Didn’t display much attacking awareness. Technical: • Was always willing to receive and was composed in possession. Stepped out of defence well to distribute passes, showed quality running with the ball. • Short passes were always secure and accurate, usually sidewards or backwards. Long passes were very good, as he stepped forwards with the ball he delivered some very effective long passes diagonally,@AshleyRMarch low into forwards feet, and also down@AshleyRMarch the right channel as through balls. He delivered an excellent long pass down the right channel to initiate an/AshleyMarch8 attack, which resulted in a cross and goal. /AshleyMarch8 • Made some good tackles as he stepped out of defence to press opposition forwards and prevent them from playing forward. Defended well in 1v1 duels, his physical strength when battling in these duels was evident. Did make some errors defending 1v1, which could have been punished by more effective attacking play - mainly as he stepped out of defence he wasn’t always close enough to affect the ball. This lead to space in behind him becoming available for the opposition to exploit. • Strong on aerial duels, was able deal with attacking threats and also be a threat to the opposition from attacking set plays. Mostly good execution of defensive@AshleyRMarch headers to clear danger in open play. @AshleyRMarch /AshleyMarch8 /AshleyMarch8 Tactical: • Very good attacking awareness demonstrated in his identification of when to step out and play long forward passes to penetrate, and also with his good attacking movements on set plays. Movement off the ball was very good. • Defensive awareness was good in how he stepped out to press individual@AshleyRMarch players, and tracked threatening runs from set plays. For much of the game he was effective in identifying dangerous movements and tracking those movements to prevent dangerous attacks. However, he wasn’t consistent with this. At times when he stepped out to press, he left spaces to be exposed by/AshleyMarch8 other threats, and at times he didn’t recognise opposition runs in behind him. The movements in behind him were a real threat, as the opposition had opportunities to score from crosses as an example. His defensive positioning also was inconsistent. At times he would be pulled out too wide by good attacking movements, and he left space that could have been exploited by opposition centrally. Technical: • Looked comfortable receiving the ball unopposed and when under pressure, good technique. • Only very late in the game did he join attacks and initiate attacks running with the ball. On these occasions he showed a good ability to run with the ball. • Passing accuracy was okay for short passes, @AshleyRMarchbut poor for longer passes. There were many@AshleyRMarch times in the game where he was complacent with execution of his passing, which resulted in losing possession/AshleyMarch8 for his team - more so over long distances/AshleyMarch8 than short distances. Looking at post-match stats, he was only successful for 50% (14/28) of his passes. • Made some excellent tackles during the game to kill attacks, two of which were last-man in box and were timed very well with very good technique. • Defended very well 1v1, using his body strength and mobility to be very difficult to beat. Closed down attackers aggressively to prevent them turning. Only one one occasion noted did he make an error in his closing down, where an attacker was able to turn and play in behind. • Had many duels from set plays which could have become aerial battles, but he never really had to challenge for the ball with his head due to the ball not landing@AshleyRMarch where he was with the marked attacker. Other than on one occasion where he missed a header, which lead to dangerous shooting@AshleyRMarch opportunity for opposition./AshleyMarch8 Overall, used his strength to dominate marked attacker. On occasions where he did head the ball unopposed, he did so with/AshleyMarch8 good technique. Tactical: • Showed little attacking awareness throughout the game. His long passes were poorly executed, and he didn’t break lines very often with short passes. Was pushed higher up in the last ten minutes when team were in search @AshleyRMarchof an equaliser. He showed better awareness of attacking possibilities in this scenario, but wasn’t successful in helping build any effective attacks. /AshleyMarch8 • Defensive awareness overall was good. He usually tracked forwards runs well - closing down attackers effectively, his positioning in defensive phases was regularly good, and as mentioned he judged and executed some very good tackles to break up attacks. He did however, on a couple of occasions, make errors in his judgements which could be attributed to lapses in concentration. These occasions were his missed header as mentioned before, and a dangerous attacking opportunity where he didn’t track the forwards run behind him to the far post, which could have been a goal if it wasn’t for a block from the goalkeeper to prevent the cross reaching @AshleyRMarchthe forward. @AshleyRMarch • Made good movements off the ball in defensive/AshleyMarch8 phases of play more often than not, and showed/AshleyMarch8 good team understanding with his defensive positioning.

Psychological & Social: • Showed good competitiveness to defend for his team, and not give the opposition opportunities to threat goal, clearing dangers wherever he could. • Communication with team mates was okay, as well as his concentration/control. Concentration marked down slightly, as this lapsed on two occasions which could have lead to goals. • Showed good@AshleyRMarch conﬁdence in his game, and overall made good decisions in this game. @AshleyRMarch • Worked hard for/AshleyMarch8 the team, showed commitment to help his team. /AshleyMarch8

Physical: • Showed excellent body strength to dominate 1v1 duels. • Very good speed shown to close down attacking threats. His speed@AshleyRMarch did seem to drop in the last 10 minutes of the game. • Very mobile throughout the game, showed his mobility certainly later/AshleyMarch8 in the game where he was joining attacking play as well as recovering to defend. • Very good agility to defend eﬀectively 1v1, especially when closing down in wide areas. Very good work rate put in for the duration of the game.

Overview: He showed very good strengths to his game in his defensive duties, speciﬁcally his ability to judge and execute tackles and his 1v1 physical duels. His passing distribution was disappointing, especially over longer distances. He also didn’t show much attacking awareness or intent in this game. Concentration seemed to lapse on occasion too. Physically, was dominant over attackers with his mobility and body strength.

Technical: • Very good ability to control the ball, and very e@AshleyRMarchﬀective running with the ball. Drove possession@AshleyRMarch forward with the ball at his feet, in a composed manner. Was on the front foot to receive and move possession forwards. • Passing both short and long was mostly good,/AshleyMarch8 but occasionally made errors in execution -/AshleyMarch8 usually under-hit passes. Well executed passes showed good technique, over long distances with right foot, and over short distances with both feet as part of combinations. • Timed tackles very well, whether it was recovering and sliding to tackle on a dangerous attack, or standing up attacker and taking the ball. • Defended well 1v1 mostly, with his ability to tackle in various ways, and also with his speed and strength to press and battle. However, on occasion was too eager to win the ball in front of him and left spaces in behind to be exposed if he wasn’t able to aﬀect the ball quickly enough. Needs focus on when to engage 1v1, and when to pass man on to team mate and defend space. When opposition had possession in wide areas, he delayed attackers very well 1v1, and@AshleyRMarch didn’t allow them to get round the outside and in behind him. Blocked crosses very well too. @AshleyRMarch • Good/AshleyMarch8 strength shown to battle for aerial duels, with good heading technique to clear danger. /AshleyMarch8

Tactical: • Demonstrated good attacking awareness with movements to support attacks down the right side. Playing as a Right Fullback, could have identified more opportunities to penetrate opposition with combination play. @AshleyRMarch • Defensive awareness was very good. Good positioning throughout, /AshleyMarch8with good marking at all set plays. On a number of occasions he tracked runners very effectively, and utilised his Physical capabilities and Defensive techniques to kill dangerous attacks. Covered well behind Central Defender, and made some good interceptions. Must focus on when to engage in front 1v1 as previously mentioned. • Made good movements off the ball to attack and defend efficiently. Clearly understood his role in the team and his work within the defensive unit. @AshleyRMarch @AshleyRMarch Psychological & Social: • Quite a relaxed attitude at times throughout the/AshleyMarch8 game, which showed control, but lacked strong/AshleyMarch8 determination. • Communicated good with his team mates, demonstrated in organising marking on occasions. • Made lots of good decisions, particularly in his defensive movements and tackling. Showed a real confidence in all of his game, very composed. • Could have done more to encourage and lead the team in the game. To take a more proactive attitude and push the team on.

Physical: • Demonstrated@AshleyRMarch excellent physical abilities in his oﬀ the ball movements, and when engaging defensively 1v1. His strength and@AshleyRMarch speed are key assets in his game.
