6 Commencement Address

Kelly Gable

The Teaching Excellence Award is one of the highest honors that can be bestowed upon an SIUE faculty member. The recipient is selected by a committee of faculty and students for demonstrated excellence as a teacher. This year’s Teaching Excellence Award recipient is Dr. Kelly Gable, associate professor of pharmacy practice in the School of Pharmacy. Prior to becoming a faculty member at SIUE, Gable received her bachelor’s and doctoral degrees from the University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy in 2002 and 2004 respectively. As a psychiatric pharmacist, Gable currently practices at Places for People in St. Louis. This site is a nonprofit community mental health center with core values that include providing mental health care to the underserved in the greater St. Louis region. The client population includes the chronically homeless, those with severe and persistent mental illness (e.g. schizophrenia, bipolar disorder), substance abusers, refugees, survivors of torture, and individuals with mental illness and co-occurring HIV. The majority of her clinical time is spent with SIUE pharmacy students during their clinical rotations, providing medication management and disease-state education to clients in the community, on the streets of St. Louis and at their places of residence. Gable is currently the only pharmacist in Missouri authorized to function as a psychiatric prescriber on community mental health teams. Chair of the Teaching Excellence Awards committee McKenzie Ferguson, PharmD, an assistant professor of pharmacy practice, cited Gable as an extraordinary educator. The committee noted Gable’s empathy and competence as a specialized healthcare provider who consistently encourages students to be self-reflective. She was recognized for being a strong role model for pharmacy students, nursing students, medical students and residents. Gable had previously been honored as the School of Pharmacy’s Preceptor of the Year and received the SIUE Department of Social Work Humanitarian Award.

E. Duff Wrobbel In 1970, the SIUE Alumni Association established the Great Teacher Award to recognize excellence in instruction and student interaction. SIUE faculty members are nominated by alumni, colleagues or current students. Those nominated have had a tremendous impact on the lives of their students, which carries on long past graduation. The SIUE Alumni Association is proud to present the 2014 award to Dr. Eric “Duff” Wrobbel, associate professor, Department of Applied Communication Studies. Wrobbel joined the SIUE faculty in 1993 and teaches across most of the applied communication studies curriculum. He earned a bachelor’s in communication and theater from Miami University Ohio, a master’s from San Diego State University and a PhD from the University of Texas-Austin. In 2000, Wrobbel received the SIUE Teaching Recognition Award and continues to have a tremendous impact on the lives of current and former students. One of his nominators wrote of Wrobbel: “When an alumna looks back on her college experience, there are always a few professors who stand out in her memory. Dr. Wrobbel would be one of those professors.” Another wrote: “Duff was straightforward, honest and eager to go above and beyond to be helpful.” When Wrobbel is not leading students, he serves as a local advocate in the Down syndrome community.

To Our Guests Commencement is the premier academic ceremony. This formal conferral of degrees marks the graduates’ mastery of SIUE curricula – undergraduate, graduate, doctoral and professional. At its best, it is an occasion of dignity, recognition and celebration. To preserve the decorum of the event, please exercise etiquette appropriate for the occasion and express your excitement in ways that will not prevent others from hearing the speakers and enjoying the ceremony. The University requests that all photographs be taken from your seat or following the ceremony.

For your convenience, we have made arrangements with Grad Images™ for a professional photographer to record the moment graduates receive their diploma covers. Students receive by mail a passport‑sized, full‑color image approximately one week after the ceremony. There is no obligation to purchase, and students will have the option of ordering several enlargement packages via web site, phone, facsimile or mail. This service enables each student to have a photograph of the ceremony. Family members and friends are requested to remain in their seats and enjoy the ceremony. Professional photographs are available for all students. Grad Trak Graduation Images™ guarantees complete satisfaction with the photographs or a full refund will be given with no questions asked. The transaction is between the student and the photographer; SIUE will not be involved.

In keeping with the occasion, we ask that all guests stand when the processional begins. After the ceremony has been completed, there will be a recessional of the platform party. Please remain in your seats until the platform party has cleared the Commencement area.

** The Commencement program was printed with accurate graduation records as of 4:30 p.m., Monday, December 1, 2014. A final version with full records will be available the week following the ceremonies at siue.edu/commencement.

22 Congratulations on your graduation and welcome to the SIUE Alumni Association! As you celebrate this milestone, please consider the fact that you are now among more than 95,000 individuals who can proudly call themselves alumni of Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. Upon your graduation, you automatically become a member of the SIUE Alumni Association, an organization established in 1972 and dedicated to assisting you in building upon the relationships and history you created here as a student. The Association offers a wealth of benefits to help you succeed personally and professionally. Our mission statement reads: The SIUE Alumni Association will be a valued partner of Southern Illinois University Edwardsville through the advancement and promotion of SIUE alumni, the University and its friends. In a few short weeks you will receive your Association Membership card and other materials which are the key to unlocking those benefits mentioned only briefly here. In the meantime, I invite you to visit our website at siue.edu/alumni to learn more about the benefits and opportunities derived from being part of the SIUE Alumni Association, as together we work to Engage, Educate and Empower Cougars for Life.
