6 Honorary Degree John Simmons John Simmons earned his baccalaureate in political science from SIUE and his Juris Doctor from Southern Methodist University of Law in Dallas. He is the founder and chairman of Simmons Browder Gianaris Angelides & Bernard LLC, a national law firm headquartered in Alton, Illinois. Since founding his law firm, Simmons has given time, service and finances that have benefitted SIUE and the surrounding community. In 2004, he donated $1 million to renovate the SIUE baseball complex. He made a $10.5 million gift to the University in 2005 to help build the Simmons Cancer Institute at SIU in Springfield and has made significant contributions toward construction of an SIUE golf training facility. In addition to donations, Simmons has served as a member and chair of the SIU Board of Trustees. He continues to be highly involved with the University. Beyond the University, Simmons’ philanthropy is evident in the nearly $5 million the Simmons Family Foundation has awarded to charities and events throughout the St. Louis region. The firm’s employees, motivated by Simmons’ generosity, started their own Simmons Employee Foundation in 2004, which has donated more than $1 million and countless volunteer hours to charitable organizations throughout Madison County and beyond. In addition to donations to charities and nonprofits across the bi-state area, the Simmons Law Firm has donated more than $10 million to mesothelioma cancer research through the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation, the Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization and its national sponsorship of Miles for Meso 5K fundraising events. Distinguished Service Award Dixie Engelman Dixie Engelman, dean emerita of the SIUE College of Arts and Sciences and associate professor emerita of speech pathology and audiology, has been a community advocate and volunteer for more than 35 years. She was the first president and remains a charter member of the SIUE Meridian Society, a group of women who provide leadership through philanthropy and pool their resources to assist SIUE community-based projects. The society makes annual grants each spring to fund SIUE projects that provide direct services in the community. Since 2003, the Meridian Society has distributed more than $207,000 in awards to more than 100 community projects. Her dedicated service to the University was exemplified in her willingness to return from retirement in 2005 and donate an extensive amount of time and work as the volunteer chair of SIUE’s 50th anniversary celebration. She devoted two years of planning and oversight of more than 100 volunteers from the University faculty, staff and students to make the year-long celebration a success. In addition to her legacy of service at SIUE, Engelman’s philanthropic support extends to volunteering on committees and governance groups at her church. She also served as the first female trustee on the Roxana School Board and as its first female board president. During her winters in Florida, Engelman works closely with elementary school children at an area school. She volunteers through a national program, Guideposts Knit for Kids, knitting sweaters for children in need around the world. Her commitment to the education and advancement of women inspired Engelman to organize an evening chapter of P.E.O. (Philanthropic Educational Organization). The international nonprofit organization celebrates the advancement of women through scholarships, grants, awards, loans and stewardship, motivating women to achieve their highest aspirations.

34 To Our Guests Commencement is the premier academic ceremony. This formal conferral of degrees marks the graduates’ mastery of SIUE curricula – undergraduate, graduate, doctoral and professional. At its best, it is an occasion of dignity, recognition and celebration. To preserve the decorum of the event, please exercise etiquette appropriate for the occasion and express your excitement in ways that will not prevent others from hearing the speakers and enjoying the ceremony. The University requests that all photographs be taken from your seat or following the ceremony.

For your convenience, we have made arrangements with Grad Images™ for a professional photographer to record the moment graduates receive their diploma covers. Students receive by mail a passport‑sized, full‑color image approximately one week after the ceremony. There is no obligation to purchase, and students will have the option of ordering several enlargement packages via web site, phone, facsimile, or mail. This service enables each student to have a photograph of the ceremony. Family members and friends are requested to remain in their seats and enjoy the ceremony. Professional photographs are available for all students. Grad Trak Graduation Images™ guarantees complete satisfaction with the photographs or a full refund will be given with no questions asked. The transaction is between the student and the photographer; SIUE will not be involved.

In keeping with the occasion, we ask that all guests stand when the processional begins. After the ceremony has been completed, there will be a recessional of the platform party. Please remain in your seats until the platform party has cleared the Commencement area. Congratulations on your graduation and welcome to the SIUE Alumni Association! As you celebrate this milestone, please consider the fact that you are now among more than 95,000 individuals who can proudly call themselves alumni of Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. Upon your graduation, you automatically become a member of the SIUE Alumni Association, an organization established in 1972 and dedicated to assist you in building upon the relationships and history you created here as a student. The Association offers a wealth of benefits to help you succeed personally and professionally. Our mission statement reads: The SIUE Alumni Association will be a valued partner of Southern Illinois University Edwardsville through the advancement and promotion of SIUE alumni, the University and its friends. In a few short weeks you will receive your Association Membership card and other materials which are the key to unlocking those benefits mentioned only briefly here. In the meantime, I invite you to visit our website at siue.edu/alumni to learn more about the benefits and opportunities derived from being part of the SIUE Alumni Association, as together we work to Engage, Educate and Empower Cougars for Life.
