SIUE Alma Mater...... 27 WELCOME TO SOUTHERN ILLINOIS UNIVERSITY EDWARDSVILLE On behalf of the faculty, staff and students of Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, I am pleased to welcome you to the 123rd commencement celebration. Our graduates have achieved a significant milestone in their lives, excelling in their academic pursuits while exemplifying the values of citizenship, excellence, inclusion, integrity and wisdom upon which the University is founded.

SIUE is a place where dreams are built and futures are formed. The University community is proud to have supported each of our students during their time on campus. At the conclusion of today’s ceremony, the graduates will share alumni status with more than 100,000 fellow Cougars. SIUE will continue to provide assistance as our students transition to the professional world or pursue an advanced course of study.

Graduates, congratulations on your very special accomplishment. We recognize both you and those who have supported you throughout your academic experience. Thank you for helping SIUE fulfill its mission to shape a changing world. We look forward to learning of your many achievements in the years to come.

Congratulations!

Randall G. Pembrook, PhD Chancellor To Our Guests

Commencement is the premier academic ceremony. This formal conferral of degrees marks the graduates’ mastery of SIUE curricula—undergraduate, graduate, doctoral and professional. At its best, it is an occasion of dignity, recognition and celebration. To preserve the decorum of the event, please exercise etiquette appropriate for the occasion and express your excitement in respectful ways that will not prevent others from hearing the speakers and enjoying the ceremony.

For your convenience, professional photographs will be available for all graduates. GradImages™ will photograph students before they cross the stage. They will capture the moment graduates receive their diploma covers and will photograph each graduate after they cross the stage.

Graduates will receive a passport sized, full color image by mail approximately one week after the ceremony. Graduates and their families will have the option of ordering from a variety of photo packages. There is no obligation to purchase photos from GradImages™.

Family members and friends are asked to remain in their seats and enjoy the ceremony.

GradImages™ guarantees complete satisfaction with the photographs or a full refund will be given with no questions asked. The transaction is between the graduate and the photographer; SIUE will not be involved. Photos will be available to view and order as soon as 48 hours after the ceremony by visiting gradimages.com.

The University requests that all photographs be taken from your seat or following the ceremony. Please move to the lobby areas or outdoors, weather permitting, for photos. Two SIUE backdrops are available in the Student Fitness Center so graduates and their loved ones can take celebratory photos before and after today’s ceremony.

In keeping with the occasion, we ask that all guests stand when the processional begins. After the ceremony has been completed, there will be a recessional of the platform party, faculty and graduates. Please remain in your seats until everyone has cleared the Commencement area.

Thank you, Commencement Staff

** The Commencement program was printed with accurate graduation records as of 9 a.m., Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2018. A final version with full records will be available the week following the ceremonies at siue.edu/commencement. The SIUE School of Nursing offers dynamic undergraduate programs of study that are both theoretical and practical, designed to meet current and future challenges of nursing and healthcare. The School prepares graduates to work in a wide variety of clinical settings and provide the necessary foundation for a master’s and doctoral degree in nursing. The traditional bachelor of science in nursing (BS) program is intended for students seeking their first degree with no prior college experience. This option is offered at the SIUE campus and through the SIUE Regional Nursing Program on the SIU Carbondale campus. The post-baccalaureate accelerated bachelor of science degree in nursing (ABS) option allows students with a bachelor’s degree to attain a BS degree in nursing through three semesters and one summer session. It is an intense, defined curriculum with a combination of classroom instruction and clinical experiences for students seeking a second baccalaureate degree. Registered nurses (RNs) who hold an associate degree in nursing or a nursing diploma can pursue the RN to BS option. This baccalaureate program is offered in a flexible, entirely online format to accommodate the needs of working RNs. The program format consists of eight-week courses and can be completed in one year if most of the general education requirements are met at the time of admission. The goal of the SIUE School of Nursing graduate program is to prepare expert nurses for leadership in professional nursing practice and patient-centered healthcare delivery. The School offers two masters(MS) programs, two fully online dual degree programs and a doctor of nursing practice degree (DNP) with three specializations. The fully online MS in Healthcare and Nursing Administration (HCNA) prepares nurses for entry into management positions in healthcare organizations, and refines the skills of experienced nurse managers to mentor them for executive-level positions. A dual MS in HCNA and Healthcare Informatics provides a unique opportunity. The online program equips healthcare professionals to leverage prior education and experience to provide leadership to teams using technology to improve patient healthcare options. The MS in Nurse Educator program is meeting the ever-increasing need for nursing faculty, SIUE’s nurse educator graduates are actively sought throughout the St. Louis metropolitan region, as well as nationally. The nurse anesthesia DNP specialization prepares registered nurses with baccalaureate degrees to provide individualized anesthetic patient care for surgical, diagnostic, therapeutic or pain management procedures. The family nurse practitioner DNP specialization program provides students with the required clinical competencies and theoretical foundation to deliver quality primary care for patients and their families. The post-master’s DNP program is designed for nurses holding a master’s degree as an advanced practice nurse, or holding a bachelor of science in nursing and a master’s degree appropriate to their advance nursing practice role. The dual Masters of Business Administration(MBA) and DNP is primarily online with two on-campus immersion experiences. The program is designed to develop the professional capabilities of managers working in business, focusing on topics such as quantitative analysis, decision making, negotiation, enhancing quality and innovation and program management.

25 * cum laude ** magna cum laude *** summa cum laude H Honors Scholars CONGRATULATIONS SIUE GRADUATES Congratulations graduates! Welcome to the SIUE Alumni Association. Your hard work has paid off, and we are happy to celebrate this momentous occasion with you today. You now belong to a group of more than 100,000 proud alumni.

The word commencement refers to “a beginning” or “to start,” and today’s ceremony represents a new beginning not only for you, but for your relationship with SIUE.

As you reflect on your time at SIUE in the days ahead, I invite you to do the following:

Stay Connected: You will soon receive your Alumni Association card with your Cougar ID. Please use your Cougar ID to sign in to Cougar Tracks, the official alumni portal, at siue.edu/alumni. Using Cougar Tracks, you can keep your records up-to-date (We want to stay connected with you, too!), add class notes, find information about alumni events and locate other SIUE alumni, among many other options.

Be Informed: Read the eDition monthly email and eConnection publication so you stay current on the leading-edge teaching techniques and research going on at the “e.” Check the headlines and read SIUE news stories at siue.edu/news.

Get involved: We want to see you at Homecoming the last weekend in September! You can attend Cougar athletic events, participate in the annual fund or join a committee. Check out siue.edu/alumni to learn more about the many ways you can get involved.

Always be proud of your alma mater!

Best regards for your ongoing success,

Rachel C. Stack Vice Chancellor for University Advancement CEO, SIUE Foundation

Mission Statement: The SIUE Alumni Association will be a valued partner of Southern Illinois University Edwardsville through the advancement and promotion of SIUE alumni, the University and its friends.
