IV Resumo A Rota Raiz consiste numa viagem ao território de Arruda dos Vinhos através da investigação, das artes e da programação cultural. Arruda dos Vinhos é um concelho do distrito de Lisboa da região oeste de Portugal. O território atravessa uma fase de grandes transformações: o legado rural tem vindo a ser ocupado pelo urbano. O território procura o seu ponto de equilíbrio. As rotas fazem parte da história de Arruda dos Vinhos. O território assumiu-se, ao longo do tempo, como um ponto de passagem, mas também de confluência de vários povos. A preservação da memória é uma urgência para que as transformações não se concretizem num território sem rumo. A mediação contemporânea da memória é fundamental para que sirva o presente e o futuro das comunidades e da sociedade. A Rota Raiz assenta em dois grandes momentos que mapeiam o território: a criação de novo património com o objetivo de constituição de arquivo, através da colheita de paisagens sonoras e fotografia; e a programação cultural enquanto mediação do arquivo e intervenção comunitária. A vertente teórica do projeto incide sobre: o estudo do território; a apresentação de estudos de caso, um deles resultante de observação participativa; e uma abordagem teórica à paisagem sonora, fotografia e envolvimento comunitário. A vertente prática consiste numa proposta desenhada a quatro anos, com o objetivo de integrar a estratégia cultural para o Município de Arruda dos Vinhos. A curadoria do projeto divide-se em quatro fases que fazem a analogia com os ciclos naturais e, concretamente, com os processos relacionados com a produção de vinho: Cultivo, Colheita, Fermentação e Amadurecimento. Este projeto apresenta contornos ambiciosos, justificando a sua pertinência através do impacto que pode ter no âmbito económico, social, educacional, cultural e artístico no território e na região. PALAVRAS-CHAVE Arruda dos Vinhos – Paisagem Sonora – Fotografia – Programação Cultura V Abstract The concept of Rota Raiz consists of a trip to the territory of Arruda dos Vinhos through research, the arts and cultural program. Arruda dos Vinhos is a municipality in the district of Lisbon in the West region of Portugal. The territory is undergoing through great transformations, as its rural legacy is quickly turning into an urban landscape and the territory seeks its own balance point. The routes are part of the history of Arruda dos Vinhos. The territory has assumed itself over time both as a crossing point but also as a point of confluence for different communities. It’s urgent to preserve the memory so that the transformations do not take place in a territory that lost its direction. Indeed, the contemporary mediation of memory is essential to serve the present and the future of the communities and society. The Rota Raiz is based on two great moments that map the territory: the creation of new heritage to constitute an archive through the collection of soundscapes and photography, and a cultural program as mediation of the archive and community intervention. The theoretical component of the project focuses on the study of the territory, presenting case studies with one of them resulting from participatory observation, and a theoretical approach to the soundscape, photography and community involvement. The practical component consists of a proposal designed four years ago, intending to integrate the cultural strategy for the Municipality of Arruda dos Vinhos. The project's curatorship is divided in four phases that make an analogy with the natural cycles and, specifically, with the processes related to wine production: Cultivation, Harvest, Fermentation and Ripening. This project has ambitious outlines, justifying its relevance through the impact it can have on the economic, social, educational, cultural and artistic spheres of the territory and the region.     Regional Dynamics and Social Diversity – Portugal in the 21st Century Teresa Ferreira Rodrigues Introduction hrough its history Portugal always presented regional differences concerning population distribution, as well as fertility and mortality trends. Local T specificities related to life and death levels reflect diverse socioeconomic conditions and also different health coverage. We will try to diagnose the main concerns and future challenges related to those regional differences, using quantitative and qualitative data on demographic trends, well-being average levels and health services offer. We want to demonstrate that this kind of academic researches can be useful to policy makers, helping them: (1) to implement regional directed policies; (2) to reduce internal diversity; and (3) to improve quality of life in the most excluded areas. Our first issue consists in measuring the link between Portuguese modernization and asymmetries on social well-being levels1. Today Portugal faces some modera- tion on population growth rates, a total dependency on migration rates, both exter- nal and internal, as well as aged structures. But national average numbers are totally different from those at a regional level, mainly if using non demographic indicators, such as average living patterns or purchase power2. The paper begins with a short diagnosis on the huge demographic and socioeco- nomic changes of the last decades. In the second part we analyze the extent of the link between those changes and regional convergence on well-being levels. Finally, we try to determine the extent of regional contrasts, their main causes and the rela- tionship between social change and local average wealth standards, as well as the main problems and challenges that will be under discussion in the years to come, in what concerns to health policies.

Under Salazar's New State it was passed over in favour of earlier periods from which that nationalist regime sought to draw inspiration; subsequent historians preferred to concentrate on social and economic developments to the detriment of the difficult evolution of Portuguese liberalism. This picture is changing, thanks to an awakening of interest in both contemporary topics and political history (although there is no consensus when it comes to defining political history). The aim of this article is to summarise these recent developments in Portuguese historiography for the benefit of an English-language audience. Keywords Nineteenth Century, History, Bibliography, Constitutionalism, Historiography, Liberalism, Political History, Portugal Politics has finally begun to carve out a privileged space at the heart of Portuguese historiography. This ‘invasion’ is a recent phenomenon and can be explained by the gradual acceptance, over the course of two decades, of political history as a genuine specialisation in Portuguese academic circles. This process of scientific and pedagogical renewal has seen a clear focus also on the nineteenth century. Young researchers concentrate their efforts in this field, and publishers are more interested in this kind of works than before. In Portugal, the interest in the 19th century is a reaction against decades of ignorance. Until April 1974, ideological reasons dictated the absence of contemporary history from the secondary school classroom, and even from the university curriculum.

    200 CIRA-ARQUEOLOGIA III – ATAS - CONGRESSO CONQUISTA E ROMANIZAÇÃO DO VALE DO TEJO Duas fortificações do final da Idade do Ferro/ início da romanização: São Salvador (Cadaval) e sítio do Castelo (Arruda dos Vinhos) GUILHERME CARDOSO ARQUEOLÓGO ASSEMBLEIA DISTRITAL DE LISBOA Resumo: O Castro de São Salvador localiza-se no município do Cadaval, Freguesia do Cercal, na par- te oriental da Serra de Montejunto, a partir do qual se domina um vasto território. Foi identificado nos anos 40 do século XX por Hipólito Cabaço. Os materiais re- sultantes das suas pesquisas, encontram-se guardados em Alenquer, no mu- seu que ostenta o seu nome. Entre 1989 e 1991, João Ludgero Gonçalves efectuou três sondagens que lhe permiti- ram perceber a técnica de construção da segunda linha de muralhas do castro e reco- lher vários materiais arqueológicos. Nos anos de 1996 e 1997, procedemos também a mais três sondagens arqueológi- cas, neste castro, onde foram identificados vestígios de estruturas num pequeno es- paço virado a sul, bem como um pequeno espólio arqueológico, que se encontra guardado no Museu Municipal do Cadaval. Mais a sul, já no concelho de Arruda dos Vinhos, entre 1988 e 1993, João Ludge- ro Gonçalves, procedeu a escavações arqueológicas no sítio do Castelo, localiza- do no extremo norte de um esporão bem próximo do Casal do Castelo, sobre o vale do rio Grande da Pipa. Sítio que já tinha sido identificado por Joaquim Gonçal- ves, quando prospectava estações arqueológicas com o fim de elaborar a Carta Ar- queológica do concelho de Sobral de Monte Agraço. Continuámos neste mesmo local escavações nos anos de 1996 e 1997, onde efec- tuámos três sondagens arqueológicas, que confirmaram os dados coligidos por João Ludgero Gonçalves anteriormente, ou seja, uma grande escassez de estru- turas, certamente devido à implantação do Forte do Paço, em 1809.
