KEY POINTS • Thanked the Vice Chairman for hosting a meeting on behalf of the Shanghai Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference. Met with Mr. Qian Jinglin during Shanghai Week in Brisbane on Friday, 26 June 2009. • Thanked the Shanghai Government for their support during the celebration of the 20th anniversary of the Sister State relationship in June 2009 in Queensland, and acknowledged the success of the Shanghai Week program which took place in Brisbane from 24 to 30 June 2009. Mr Qian Jinglin, Vice Chairman of Chinese People’s Political Consultative Committee led a 231 delegate mission, including government and business leaders, to Queensland to celebrate this important achievement. • Reinforced Queensland’s commitment and friendship, as well as building a stronger relationship with the Shanghai Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference Shanghai. • Strengthened Queensland relations with Shanghai including the development of parliamentary bilateral relations. • Noted the Shanghai Week celebration was a significant milestone and as part of the lead up to the World Expo 2010 celebrations. • Noted the achievements of the Sister State relationship in building and strengthening collaborations in trade, education, sports, science and technology, arts and creative industries between the two States. • Expressed desire for Queensland Parliament to have on-going dialogue with Shanghai. • Want Queensland to be active participants in World Expo in 2010.

Viewing of a Model of the Shanghai World Expo Site

KEY POINTS • Reaffirmed Queensland’s commitment to participate in the Shanghai World Expo 2010 (World Expo). • Noted the progress of the World Expo preparation. • Congratulated the Shanghai World Expo on the successful recruitment of more than 240 countries and international associations having confirmed their participation at the World Expo, themed “Better City Better Life.” • Highlighted that Queensland and Shanghai have enjoyed an extensive Sister State relationship for 20 years which has built and strengthened collaborations between the two States in education, tourism, trade and investment, science and technology, arts and creative industries. A recent example of this was “Shanghai Week”, which was successfully co-hosted by the Queensland and Shanghai Governments in Brisbane, between 24 to 30 June 2009. • Noted that Queensland has entered into a platinum sponsorship agreement with the Australian Government to participate in World Expo through the Australian pavilion. The pavilion will highlight Australia’s dynamic economy, business and industry sectors; innovation and technological sophistication; outstanding universities and research institutions; exciting tourism destination; diverse society; and commitment to sustainable development.

ISSUES • World Expo will be the biggest in history, with an estimated 70-80 million visitors during the six months of operations from 1 May to 31 October 2010. At least 240 nations and international organisations will take part, including all of Australia’s key market and competitor countries. • The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has acknowledged that China views Australia’s involvement as integral to the World Expo and expects a significant Australian presence, commensurate with the breadth and depth of bilateral political and economic relations. • Participation at World Expo in a substantive and innovative way will showcase Australia’s advanced economy and display the nation as a sophisticated society with some of the world’s most liveable, dynamic and environmentally friendly cities. The World Expo will also be a platform to profile Queensland’s expertise in a range of areas including business, science, technology and innovation, arts and culture, education, training, tourism, green building and clean energy. • It is essential that Trade Queensland ensure that Queensland companies are notified of this significant event and advised of how they can become involved.

KEY POINTS • Met with Mr Lin Yuanhe, Secretary General of Foshan Municipal Committee and representatives from the Standing Committee of Foshan People's Congress. • Noted that Foshan Mayor Mr Cheng Yunxian had been invited to visit Australia in October 2009 as the guest of the Australian Government because he has been identified as an emerging Chinese leader. • Foshan has had a successful Sister City relationship with Townsville since 2006.

Page 13 • Nova Deko, a Queensland company with significant investment in Foshan, has produced innovative green building products from its Foshan factory and is gearing to export to a number of countries from its plant in China. The green building sector is a top priority area for both Queensland and Foshan Governments. • Foshan is the centre for most of the Chinese students studying in Australia.

KEY POINTS • Attended the official opening of works by Queensland artist Steven Dix, titled "Travelling Across Boundaries". Mr Dix was introduced to the gallery by the Queensland Trade Office in Hong Kong and in just three months, Mr Dix's stunning contemporary oil paintings were on exhibit at one of the busiest shopping arcades in Hong Kong. • Wines from some of Queensland award winning vineyards wines were available for tasting to the public. Vineyards showcasing their products were Sirromet Winery, Jimbour Winery and Symphony Hill winery.

KEY POINTS • Briefed the Ambassador on the objectives of visit to Vietnam. • Received a briefing on the current political and business climate in Vietnam and the Vietnam-Australia relationship. • Noted the increasing linkages between Queensland and Vietnam educational institutions. • Highlighted to the Ambassador that, while off a relatively low base, Queensland’s exports to Vietnam have grown by 273 per cent over the past decade to A$145 million in 2008-09. • Ambassador explained advantages of Central Region where Queensland universities are strong. • Introduced University of Southern Cross Professor Neil Ryan to the Ambassador. Prof Ryan provided a brief on the work they are currently undertaking in Vietnam.

KEY POINTS • Held meeting with Professor Huynh Phuc, Department of Science and Technology. Discussed the need of weed eradication with Southern Cross University. • Received a briefing on the noxious weed problem. This weed will cost the Government millions to eradicate. A scientist from the Southern Cross University has been contacted with an aim to try to eradicate the weed genetically. The scientist will visit Danang in the near future.

KEY POINTS • Acknowledged that it was a pleasure to again meet the Chairman. • Advised the Chairman that the Queensland Government recently had the pleasure of hosting Ms Do Phuong Thao from the Danang Government's International Cooperation Division for a one week program as part of Ms Thao’s studies in Australia. • Introduced Professor Neil Ryan from the Southern Cross University and advised of actions taken to assist Government with weed eradication. • Sought an update on Danang’s recent tourism development and the opportunities for Queensland education providers to partner with local institutions for the delivery of courses related to tourism and hospitality management. • Advised that the Chair of the Queensland Education and Training International Board would visit Danang with a delegation of education and training providers on Monday 2 November. • Enquired as to how the University of Queensland, Griffith University and James Cook University had been exploring these opportunities since last meeting. • Highlighted the growing interest of Queensland education institutions in Vietnam, in particular the fast-growing regions of Vietnam such as Danang. • Outlined plans to meet with representatives from The University of Queensland, Griffith University and Charlton Brown students in Danang. • Advised that at the September 2009 Queensland Education and Training International Awards, a Vietnamese student studying on full scholarship at a

KEY POINTS • Held a lunch meeting with Mr Luong Minh San, Director and representatives of Danang Foreign Affairs Department.

The rest of the program on Monday and Tuesday were cancelled due to the Universities being ordered to be shut because of the approaching typhoon. Visitors in Danang were also ordered to stay in a safe room at their hotel. All flights were cancelled.
