melinda’s star trek las vegas convention report / aug 9-12, 2007 the las vegas star trek convention was the first large scale convention that i have attended. from what i’ve read, there were close to 4,000 fans in attendance. what a remarkable testament to this beloved franchise. it’s been over 20 years since i went to a convention, so i was more than a little excited for this big trip. wednesday, august 8th my good friend, karen, and i arrived in vegas on wednesday night and pre-registered. thank goodness for pre-registration the night before the convention because the lines the next day to register were ridiculously long! when we first walked through the large convention area, giant star trek banners of the various crews in the star trek series were hanging on the walls. one very large banner had all the guests pictured that would be appearing at the convention. after grabbing a bite to eat, it was on to the “chocolate on the edge of forever” welcoming party where they had all kinds of chocolate goodies. tim russ (tuvok from voyager) was performing with his band as the entertainment. i really had no idea that tim russ was a singer and a guitar player, and i was impressed with his talent. after he ended his set, he stayed and signed copies of his cd that he was selling and graciously posed for pictures with fans for quite some time. it was a very casual setting. while tim russ signed, there was also a karaoke contest going on, and the fans had a lot of fun with that. -

Copyright 2013 Shawn Patrick Gilmore THE INVENTION OF THE GRAPHIC NOVEL: UNDERGROUND COMIX AND CORPORATE AESTHETICS BY SHAWN PATRICK GILMORE DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in English in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2013 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Professor Michael Rothberg, Chair Professor Cary Nelson Associate Professor James Hansen Associate Professor Stephanie Foote ii Abstract This dissertation explores what I term the invention of the graphic novel, or more specifically, the process by which stories told in comics (or graphic narratives) form became longer, more complex, concerned with deeper themes and symbolism, and formally more coherent, ultimately requiring a new publication format, which came to be known as the graphic novel. This format was invented in fits and starts throughout the twentieth century, and I argue throughout this dissertation that only by examining the nuances of the publishing history of twentieth-century comics can we fully understand the process by which the graphic novel emerged. In particular, I show that previous studies of the history of comics tend to focus on one of two broad genealogies: 1) corporate, commercially-oriented, typically superhero-focused comic books, produced by teams of artists; 2) individually-produced, counter-cultural, typically autobiographical underground comix and their subsequent progeny. In this dissertation, I bring these two genealogies together, demonstrating that we can only truly understand the evolution of comics toward the graphic novel format by considering the movement of artists between these two camps and the works that they produced along the way. -

The sign or “target” for pages apparently lacking from the document photographed is “Missing Page(s)”. If it was possible to obtain the missing page(s) or section, they are spliced into the film along with adjacent pages. This may have necessitated cutting through an image and duplicating adjacent pages to assure you of complete continuity. 2. When an image on the film is obliterated with a round black mark it is an indication that the film inspector noticed either blurred copy because of movement during exposure, or duplicate copy. Unless we meant to delete copyrighted materials that should not have been filmed, you will find a good image of the page in the adjacent frame. 3. When a map, drawing or chart, etc., is part of the material being photo graphed the photographer has followed a definite method in “sectioning” the material. It is customary to begin filming at the upper left hand corner of a large sheet and to continue from left to right in equal sections with small overlaps. If necessary, sectioning is continued again—beginning below the first row and continuing on until complete. 4. For any illustrations that cannot be reproduced satisfactorily by xerography, photographic prints can be purchased at additional cost and tipped into your xerographic copy. -

It was a terrific nightmare vision and instantly I added the name of Murray Leinster to the list that already held A. Merritt, Edgar Rice Burroughs, and a few others. I have been reading and admiring his stories ever since, and I hope they go on forever. Mr. Leinster is a professional, in the finest sense of the word, meaning that he has the skills of his profession at his fingertips. And his profession is that of a master story-teller. His stories take hold of you from the first page and build with a sheer craftmanship and econ omy of effort that are the envy and despair of anyone who has ever tried to do the same thing. In science-fiction, imagination is even more important than writ ing skill, and the boldness of his imaginative concepts is one big rea son why Murray Leinster’s name has been up there in the bright lights for so long. -

Raoul Walsh to Attend Opening of Retrospective Tribute at Museum
The Museum of Modern Art jl west 53 Street, New York, N.Y. 10019 Tel. 956-6100 Cable: Modernart NO. 34 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE RAOUL WALSH TO ATTEND OPENING OF RETROSPECTIVE TRIBUTE AT MUSEUM Raoul Walsh, 87-year-old film director whose career in motion pictures spanned more than five decades, will come to New York for the opening of a three-month retrospective of his films beginning Thursday, April 18, at The Museum of Modern Art. In a rare public appearance Mr. Walsh will attend the 8 pm screening of "Gentleman Jim," his 1942 film in which Errol Flynn portrays the boxing champion James J. Corbett. One of the giants of American filmdom, Walsh has worked in all genres — Westerns, gangster films, war pictures, adventure films, musicals — and with many of Hollywood's greatest stars — Victor McLaglen, Gloria Swanson, Douglas Fair banks, Mae West, James Cagney, Humphrey Bogart, Marlene Dietrich and Edward G. Robinson, to name just a few. It is ultimately as a director of action pictures that Walsh is best known and a growing body of critical opinion places him in the front rank with directors like Ford, Hawks, Curtiz and Wellman. Richard Schickel has called him "one of the best action directors...we've ever had" and British film critic Julian Fox has written: "Raoul Walsh, more than any other legendary figure from Hollywood's golden past, has truly lived up to the early cinema's reputation for 'action all the way'...." Walsh's penchant for action is not surprising considering he began his career more than 60 years ago as a stunt-rider in early "westerns" filmed in the New Jersey hills. -
