RIVER MURRAY WEEKLY REPORT FOR THE WEEK ENDING WEDNESDAY, 11 JULY 2012 Trim Ref: D12/29243 Rainfall and Inflows There were fine, dry days and cold clear nights over the Murray-Darling Basin for much of the week until a slow moving trough brought cloud and renewed rainfall over the last few days. The system delivered widespread rain across the southern two thirds of the Basin (Map 1). Highest totals were recorded in the south-east ranges, although there were also good falls further inland including the Riverina and much of western NSW. In north-east Victoria there was 86 mm at Whitlands, 76 mm at Lake William-Hovell, 71 mm at Moroka Park and 67 mm at Cheshunt. Totals in NSW included 39 mm at Gundagai and Mt Ginini and 36 mm at Burrinjuck Dam, Tumbarumba, Gilgandra and Wellington. Out west, there was 33 mm at Menindee and on the NSW-Queensland border there was 49 mm at Hungerford. The Bureau of Meteorology has forecast further rain for the region in the days ahead. There has been a good stream flow response across the upper Murray tributaries with inflows now on the rise. On the upper River Murray, the flow at Jingellic has increased to 14,700 ML/day and is expected to continue rising towards 20,000 ML/day in the next day or two. On the Ovens River, the flow at Rocky Point increased from 3,500 to 8,300 ML/day with further rises expected, while downstream at Wangaratta, the flow has increased to over 5,000 ML/day but could exceed 20,000 ML/day in the days ahead. -

I lost my arm in that battle yet later became the only outlaw ever elected to parliament! On 24 Nov 1857 all men received the right to vote. Our Southern Cross flag is now the Australian flag. Down with tyranny! John Batman, Founder of Colonial Melbourne (1801 –1839) I was a Tasmania sheep farmer when I led an expedition to sign a ‘treaty’ with Aboriginal ‘chiefs’ in 1835 to found the settlement of Melbourne and the colony of Victoria. I captured bushranger Mathew Brady and married a runaway convict Eliza Callaghan. We had seven children in all. At Melbourne’s first land sale in 1837. I bought the Young and Jackson Hotel site opposite Flinders Street Station to build a home for my children. It became a schoolhouse in 1839 and today a famous pub. See Chloe upstairs! Ron Clarke, Runner 1937- I had the great honour of carrying the torch into the stadium in the Melbourne Olympic Games in 1956. I was also the first man to run three miles in under 13 minutes. They said I was fastest man on the planet when I broke 17 world records and 25 Australian records in 1965. -

LAND EXPLORERS of AUSTRALIA 3 William Hovell and Hamilton Hume Governor Brisbane asked Hamilton Hume (an Australian born expert bushman and explorer) to join William Hovell (an English sea captain and expert navigator) in an expedition from Lake George to Spenser Gulf. William Hovell Hamilton Hume Instead they decided to 1786 ~ 1875 1797 ~ 1873 go to Westernport. They set out in October 1824, and after two weeks they reached the Murrumbidgee River. It was in fl ood and they waited three days to cross it. On the 8th of November they discovered the Australian Alps. Eight days later they came to a wide, deep and clear river which they named the “Hume”; it is now known as the Murray. They continued on, crossing the Ovens and Goulburn rivers as well as the southern part of the Great Dividing Range. They fi nally reached Corio Bay, near where Geelong is now, and not Westernport as they believed, which was actually some 100km to the east. They then returned to Sydney claiming that they had found Hume and Hovell crossing the Murray River in 1824. good grazing land near Westernport. Captain Matthew Flinders (1774~1814)
Captain Matthew Flinders (1774~1814) Captain Matthew Flinders was born 16 March, 1774. He was one of the most successful cartographers and navigators of his time. In a career that only spanned twenty years he circumnavigated Australia, proved Tasmania was an island and was the person responsible for the name “Australia” being adopted. Born in Lincolnshire, England, Matthew Flinders was introduced to the sea through reading the book Robinson Crusoe. Coming from a family of doctors, Flinders was expected to follow the same profession, but at the age of 15 he joined the Royal Navy. By 1790, Flinders had been made a midshipman and worked transporting breadfruit from Tahiti to Jamaica where he developed his navigation skills under the leadership of Captain Bligh. Flinders first trip to Port Jackson, New South Wales was in 1795 as a midshipman. On this voyage he quickly proved himself as a fine navigator and cartographer. He also became friends with the ship’s surgeon George Bass. Not long after arriving in Port Jackson, Bass and Flinders made two small expeditions in small open boats, both named Tom Thumb. Their first journey was to Botany Bay and Georges River; the second south from Port Jackson to Lake Illawarra . These journeys allowed Flinders to upgrade the maps of the New South Wales coast. In 1798 Flinders was given command of the ship, Norfolk and given orders to investigate beyond the Furneaux’s Islands and explore the extent of the strait between the mainland and Van Diemen's Land ( now known as Tasmania). Flinders and Bass journeyed through the strait and circumnavigated Van Diemen's Land, proving that it was a separate island. -

A Cordial Encounter? 53 A Cordial Encounter? The Meeting of Matthew Flinders and Nicolas Baudin (8-9 April, 1802) Jean Fornasiero and John West-Sooby1 The famous encounter between Nicolas Baudin and Matthew Flinders in the waters off Australia’s previously uncharted south coast has now entered the nation’s folklore. At a time when their respective countries were locked in conflict at home and competing for strategic advantage on the world stage, the two captains were able to set aside national rivalries and personal disappointments in order to greet one another with courtesy and mutual respect. Their meeting is thus portrayed as symbolic of the triumph of international co-operation over the troubled geopolitics of the day. What united the two expeditions—the quest for knowledge in the spirit of the Enlightenment—proved to be stronger than what divided them. This enduring—and endearing—image of the encounter between Baudin and Flinders is certainly well supported by the facts as we know them. The two captains did indeed conduct themselves on that occasion in an exemplary manner, readily exchanging information about their respective discoveries and advising one another about the navigational hazards they should avoid or about safe anchorages where water and other supplies could be obtained. Furthermore, the civility of their meeting points to a strong degree of mutual respect, and perhaps also to a recognition of their shared experience as navigators whom fate had thrown together on the lonely and treacherous shores of the “unknown coast” of Australia. And yet, as appealing as it may be, this increasingly idealized image of the encounter runs the risk of masking some of its subtleties and complexities. -

Dooley: Uses of Adversity The Uses of Adversity: Matthew Flinders’ Mauritius Writings. Gillian Dooley My work in Special Collections at the Flinders University Library has brought me into close contact with many aspects of our namesake Matthew Flinders, especially recently. Over the years my predecessors have assiduously collected every scrap of information or memorabilia on Flinders that came their way, and my current project is cataloguing this material, providing subject access via our library catalogue.1 We have a few treasures, but the real value of the collection lies in its collocation of many bits and pieces from two centuries of academic and journalistic interest in Flinders. And inevitably this work has led me to follow other trails, reading some of the many excellent biographies, and his own work as well, ranging from his journals, now available in facsimile and transcript on the State Library of NSW web site,2 to his monumental Voyage to Terra Australis, in Tim Flannery’s timely abridged version3 — light enough to carry on the bus — and his memoir of his devoted ship’s cat Trim. And I have discovered that Matthew Flinders was a writer of considerable ability — which is to say, I have ‘discovered’ the fact in the same way 1 URL <voyager.flinders.edu.au> 2 The Private Journal is also about to be published by Crawford House in an edition by Anthony J. UI John Batman was born at Parramatta, Sydney, in 1800, and emigrated to Van Diemen's Land twenty years later, where be became a flourishing farmer. At this time considerable difficulty was beinag experienced with the natives, and the niame of John Batman stands out as a splendid example of humane treatment, in place of the "crow-shooting" adopted by many of the settlers and ex-convicts at that time. -
