Wenatchee is 3-1 in WCL series openers after rallying to beat Bend, 5-4, last night for their closest win in 2021. The Sox got four runs off five hits in the first three innings before chilling offensively. The Elks tied it with a run in the sixth but the AppleSox scored the game-winning run in the eighth on Jackson Van De Brake's bases-loaded walk. Wenatchee welcomed some new faces to the fold last night. Catcher John Newman Jr. started the game, went 1-for-3 with a run. Collin Villegas finished the night behind the plate as defensive replacement in the ninth and prevented the tying run from scoring by holding onto the ball after being knocked over on a suicide squeeze attempt. Michael O'Hara collected three hits and drove in a pair, Zach Toglia reached base safely three times and Justin Simpson pinch-ran for Newman in the eighth, stole second and scored the go- ahead run. O'Hara's 3-hit, 2-RBI game was the 1st one this season for Wenatchee. It was just the 3rd time this season a Sox hitter got 3 hits or more in a single game. Last night the squad struck out a season-low 6 times while also earning more walks (7) than whiffs for the 1st time in 2021. After yesterday's win, the AppleSox hitting still ranks ninth in the 10-team WCL with a .203 batting average .315 OB% and a .282 SLG%. Pitching-wise, Sox arms are third in the league with just 35 walks allowed, fourth in wild pitches (8), Tied for fourth with a 1.41 WHIP and have allowed four homers. 2021 Scoring By Inning 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 Total Opponents 05 07 13 14 07 04 02 02 01 54 AppleSox 08 03 05 06 04 04 02 08 00 40 2 Tonight's AppleSox Starter Record When Overall................................6-4 Freshman, #11 1st Half................................6-4 Jacob Hughes Oregon 2nd Half................................0-0 Non-League...........................0-2 SUMMER 2021 GAME LOG Division.................................4-2 GAME DATE OPPONENT W/L IP R ER H K BB HBP HR P Home.......................................5-2 June 4 POR ND 2.0 0 0 0 3 0 0 0 23 Road........................................1-2 June 10 WW ND 5.0 1 1 4 6 0 0 0 69 Day.........................................0-0 SUMMER 2021 TOTALS Night......................................6-4 0-0, 1.28 ERA, 2 G (1 GS), 7 IP, 9 K, 0 BB, 4 H, 0 HBP .167 OAVG... NATIONAL COLLEGIATE BASEBALL WRITERS NEWSLETTER (Volume 43, No. 7, December 10, 2004) NCBWA President’s Message By NCBWA President Mike Montoro Though the holiday and bowl seasons are here upon us, we hope the recently-released preseason NCBWA All-America team will bring some warm thoughts of spring to you. Our deepest sympathies go to the family and friends of late NCBWA member Matt Smith, who died while on a basketball road trip to Mississippi State on Dec. 3. The South Alabama SID was a frequent contributor and one of the top young SIDs in the nation. His passing at this time of the year strikes home particularly hard to those who knew or worked with Matt. Don’t forget to email any news items to Bo Carter ([email protected]) for the newsletter, and thanks for staying attuned to some upcoming developments which can affect the NCBWA and college baseball as a whole. There are some exciting possibilities and some possible new awards on the horizon, so be on the watch for nomination forms, releases and other forthcoming information. In the meantime, here’s wishing you the happiest of holiday seasons (and bowls for many of you), safe travels, and good cheer for the end of 2004 and the start of what promises to be an outstanding year in 2005. Mike Montoro NCBWA President NCBWA Member Matt Smith of South Alabama Dies Suddenly Matt Smith, media relations director for the University of South Alabama, died unexpectedly on Dec. 3, 2004, of an apparent heart attack in Starkville, Miss., while traveling with the USA basketball team.
