NATIONAL COLLEGIATE BASEBALL WRITERS NEWSLETTER (Volume 43, No
NATIONAL COLLEGIATE BASEBALL WRITERS NEWSLETTER (Volume 43, No. 7, December 10, 2004) NCBWA President’s Message By NCBWA President Mike Montoro Though the holiday and bowl seasons are here upon us, we hope the recently-released preseason NCBWA All-America team will bring some warm thoughts of spring to you. Our deepest sympathies go to the family and friends of late NCBWA member Matt Smith, who died while on a basketball road trip to Mississippi State on Dec. 3. The South Alabama SID was a frequent contributor and one of the top young SIDs in the nation. His passing at this time of the year strikes home particularly hard to those who knew or worked with Matt. Don’t forget to email any news items to Bo Carter ([email protected]) for the newsletter, and thanks for staying attuned to some upcoming developments which can affect the NCBWA and college baseball as a whole. There are some exciting possibilities and some possible new awards on the horizon, so be on the watch for nomination forms, releases and other forthcoming information. In the meantime, here’s wishing you the happiest of holiday seasons (and bowls for many of you), safe travels, and good cheer for the end of 2004 and the start of what promises to be an outstanding year in 2005. Mike Montoro NCBWA President NCBWA Member Matt Smith of South Alabama Dies Suddenly Matt Smith, media relations director for the University of South Alabama, died unexpectedly on Dec. 3, 2004, of an apparent heart attack in Starkville, Miss., while traveling with the USA basketball team. -

San Antonio Missions National Historical Park (PDF)
A fact sheet from 2017 Marcia Argust/The Pew Charitable Trusts Repairing door beams at Mission San José—one of the four protected within the park—is part of a $7.4 million maintenance backlog. Carol Highsmith/Library of Congress San Antonio Missions National Historical Park Texas Overview San Antonio Missions National Historical Park is one of America’s cultural treasures, designated in 2015 as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The park preserves four Spanish frontier missions built in the 1700s for Franciscan friars who hoped to convert the Native Americans to Catholicism. Over time, the Spanish and local tribes built a new culture in what is now South Texas. Drawing more than a million visitors a year, the park is also a boon to San Antonio’s economy. But it faces a maintenance backlog of $7.3 million that includes restoring the missions and key infrastructure. Maintenance challenges The park’s most urgent repairs are to its historic buildings and visitor center. The center is more than 20 years old and needs more than a half-million dollars to update its interpretive displays. Nearly $400,000 is needed to repair the office and sacristy of the Franciscan father-president, who oversaw development of the missions. A compound where Native Americans lived, and the walls that encircle it, also requires restoration at a cost of $600,000. Repair needs go beyond the buildings that define San Antonio Missions. Several parking lots are showing their age and require almost a million dollars to resurface, and its water and communication systems are deteriorating and must be replaced. -

Minor League Baseball and Its Clubs Embodied the Mission of Milb
2019 MiLBTM COMMUNITY REPORT LETTER FROM PAT O’CONNER LETTER FROM PAT Dear Friends and Colleagues, Thank you for your efforts in making 2019 another successful philanthropic year for Minor League Baseball, our 160 teams and MiLB Charities. As we prepare for the 2020 season, we have many accomplishments from last season to celebrate. None of our efforts would be possible without the great work of our teams, continued dedication from staff at the national office and the support of our millions of fans nationwide. For a fifth straight year, all 160 clubs reported their charitable giving and contributions, allowing us to accurately assess our collective efforts. It gives me great pleasure to say that in 2019, MiLB Charities donated nearly $50 million in cash and gifts in kind from our teams, leagues and partners — once again setting a new record-high total. In addition, MiLB and its teams nearly doubled our volunteer efforts from 2018, giving more than 26,000 hours in service of our communities. This report highlights MiLB Charities’ many programs and initiatives, including the MiLB CommUNITY Initiative presented by Allegiant Air, the Stars & Stripes Caps Program with New Era Cap Company, the Derrick Hall Pro-State Foundation Father’s Day Initiative, Ed Randall’s Fans For the Cure, the Joe Torre Safe At Home Domestic Violence Awareness Initiative, and the “Cover Your Bases” Sun Safety Initiative with the American Cancer Society. These are just a few of the ways our teams and partners are working together to make positive and lasting impacts in our MiLB communities. -
