INTRODUCTION

This booklet has been produced to help guide visitors through a beautiful and unspoilt part of West within the National Park. The Octagon Parish is made up of eight villages with churches: Stansted, , Stoughton, , , , Compton and Forestside and two villages without churches: and . Blessed with wonderful walks and fine views down to the south coast, its small ancient downland churches are noted for their spiritual peace and tranquility, some dating back to Saxon times. There are two stately homes in the area: Stansted House and Uppark. To mark the Diamond Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in 2012, The Octagon decided to establish a long circular walking route using existing footpaths and bridleways to link all the villages together. This is called The Octagon Way and is about 18 miles long. There are also eight circular Octagon Short Walks of 2–4 miles each.

POINTS OF INTEREST Distance: See information under Walk 5. 3 miles Time: 1½ hours Access: Some steep ascents. ROUTE No stiles,10 gates and 5 block steps at start of walk.  From village square turn left  at pub. Walk 200 Getting there: See Walk 5 yards along road to The Old Post Office (now a Parking: See Walk 5 private home). Turn right  across road. B2141  Climb block steps; follow diagonal path across field; through pine woodland; across next field uphill; up bank by footpath fingerpost, through Uppark Compton tall swing gate into West Hanger Wood (used for pheasant breeding). Village Shop & Climb steeply uphill past cross-track Tea Room footpath fingerpost, then through Jubilee St Clump Coach & Mary’s second swing gate into field. Follow Compton Horses diagonal path to fingerpost. Down West Hanger Wood East  Turn right , then uphill towards Jubilee Clump on hilltop (planted to Marden celebrate Queen Victoria’s Diamond B2146 Hill Jubilee in 1897). Turn left  at Barn fingerpost. Continue to wood edge; bear right  along track between hedgerows to Hill Barn. Turn right . Continue with hedge (on left) and field (on right). Enter woods 100 yards ahead. Continue to bridleway fingerpost.  Turn right . Pass through gate; continue past bridleway marker post and descend to next gate. Continue on path through further two gates keeping woods on right.  Metal gate leads into grass field; take left diagonal across field to fence line.  Pass through gate onto lane; turn right  for 150 yards to kissing gate and turn right  back into field. Cross diagonally, descending to fence on left.  Turn left  through kissing gate; cross field with fence (on right); through last kissing gate to road. Lodge  Turn right .
