These sites exposed a set of sedimentary deposits currently attributed to the Aurelia and to the Vitinia Formations correlated with MIS 9 and MIS 7, respectively. In the present paper we reconstruct the geologic-stratigraphic setting in the western sector of Rome within the wider context of glacio- eustatically controlled, geochronologically constrained aggradational successions defined for this region. We present a chronostratigraphic study based on dedicated field surveys, that, combined with five new 40Ar/39Ar ages and eighteen trace-element and EMP glass analyses of volcanic products, allow us to revise age and correlation with the Marine Isotopic Stages for 10 sites out of 12 previously attributed to the Aurelia Formation and the Torre in Pietra Faunal Unit. In particular, we demonstrate a MIS 13/MIS 11 age for several sections along the Via Aurelia between Malagrotta and Castel di Guido. Based on this new geochronological framework, the first occurrences of Canis lupus and Vulpes vulpes in Italy are antedated to MIS 11, within the Fontana Ranuccio Faunal Unit of the Galerian Mammal Age, consistent with the wider European context. This contribution is intended as the groundwork for a revision of the Middle Pleistocene Mammal Ages of the Italian peninsula, according to the improved chronostratigraphy of the geologic sections hosting the faunal assemblages. Introduction 2 The Aurelian Mammal Age (AMA) is based on the faunal assemblages mainly recovered at 3 several sites along the Via Aurelia west of Rome (Gliozzi et al., 1997, Figure 1). These sites 4 exposed a set of continental to transitional sedimentary deposits that were attributed by the 5 authors to the Aurelia and to the Vitinia Formations. Deposition of these successions was 6 correlated with Marine Isotopic Stage (MIS) 9 and MIS 7, respectively, based on rather weak 7 geochronological markers pointing out to an age around 350 - 300 ka for the former one 8 (Conato et al., 1980). Within the AMA, two faunal units (FU) corresponding to the Early and to 9 the Middle Aurelian were defined: Torre in Pietra FU and Vitinia FU, correlating to MIS 9 and 10 MIS 7, respectively (Gliozzi et al., 1997). Representative local fauna for the Late Aurelian was 11 recognized only later on (Melpignano FU and Ingarano FU; Petronio et al., 2007). 12 Gliozzi et al. (1997) and Petronio et al. (2011), proposed that the beginning of the AMA was 13 approximately in correspondence with MIS 10 and characterized by the appearance of the 14 taxa representing the core of the present day mammal fauna, considered to mark the early 15 Aurelian or Torre in Pietra FU (MIS 10-9). In particular, the faunal renewal in this region 16 was characterized by the disappearance of the cervid species Megaceros savini, 17 Megaceroides verticornis, Cervus elaphus acoronatus, which were replaced by Megaloceros 18 giganteus, along with the spread of the quasi endemic subspecies of Cervus elaphus 19 eostephanoceros and rianensis, and by the first occurrence (FO) of several carnivorous 20 species, including Mustela putorius, Ursus spelaeus, Vulpes vulpes, Canis lupus, Felis 21 silvestris, and Panthera spelaea. However, the Italian FO's of these latter species postdate 22 those reported in the literature of the new Millennium for western Europe, where a MIS 12 23 lower boundary for the AMA is generally assumed (e.g., Barishnikov, 2002). 24 The middle Aurelian faunal assemblages constituting the Vitinia FU (MIS 8.5-7) were 25 characterized by appearance of a subspecies of fallow deer, Dama dama tiberina, and of a 26 small sized equid with slender

PL: Well, I do believe I was quite lucky, if we can put it this way, I was born in the last century, 1898, in Rome and not from a family were cultural marked point was strong. My father was very inventive himself, he could draw horses. He loved to walk long distances. I remember as a young boy we used to walk outside the gates of Rome in Via Solaria or toward Ostia, and he was not a very tall man but while he walked, and while he talked he grew, I thought he was very tall, and he was inspired, his chest forward because he was the bandolier, which is a sort of an elite corps in the Italian army and he volunteered very young. So going back to our walks, he was familiar with the Roman ruins and frescoes in churches particularly those churches on the outskirts of Rome.

Ningún otro país de nuestro entorno al norte del Mediterráneo ofrece mayores posibilidades para el estudio y disfrute de los registros paleontológicos del Plioceno y Pleistoceno. En este contexto destacan las principales cuencas sedimentarias como las de Besalú-Bañolas, Vallés, Calatayud-Teruel, o ya en el sur las cuencas intrabéticas, donde merece especial interés la de Baza y Guadix, con localidades emblemáticas como Baza 1 para el Plioceno, y como los yacimientos de Orce (Fuente Nueva 1 y 3, Venta Micena o Barranco León, entre otros) para el Pleistoceno inferior. Hi ha incerteses en la recerca dels ancestres dels hipopòtams insulars, les quals es deuen al desenvolupament de caràcters endèmics i a la confusió existent a la sistemàtica de les espècies continentals europees. A aquest treball es compara la morfologia craniana i la biometria dels hipopòtams insulars del Pleistocè amb la de les espècies continentals, i s'introdueix una discussió sobre la seva sistemàtica. Hippopotamus amphibius podria ser l'ancestre d'Hippo­ potamus pentlandi, el qual a la seva volta podria ser l'ancestre d'Hippopotamus melitensis. Hippopotamus antiquus sembla ser ]'ancestre d' Hippopotamus creutzburgi. Los hipopótamos comunes se desenvuelven en zonas de aguas tranquilas y someras, que abandonan durante la noche para pacer vegetación terrestre (Nowak 1999). Por ello, sus poblaciones experimentan una mortalidad acusada durante las sequías prolongadas, debido a la escasez de pastos en las inmediaciones de las pozas de barro a las que se ven confinados (Eltringham, 1999). Los hipopótamos no nadan, se desplazan caminando por el fondo de los ríos y lagos; por ello, sus huesos, cortos y robustos, presentan la cavidad medular rellena de tejido esponjoso, para regular su flotabilidad. Por sus condiciones ecológicas de alta dependencia del medio acuático y al no soportar temperaturas frías extremas, los hipopótamos resultan excelentes indicadores climáticos y ecológicos, mostrando una estrecha relación con los homininos donde ambos coexisten. Hippopotamus antiquus es una especie extinta con un amplio registro en los yacimientos del Villafranquiense superior y el Galeriense de Europa y Asia occidental.

These fossils recently became available for study. The bones are quite well preserved, included in a hard reddish matrix with calcareous clasts. The fossil is part of a faunal assemblage referred to the Late Villafranchian (Early Pleistocene). M. whitei from Monte Argentario is characterised by elongated upper canines, stronger than those of the Upper Valdarno (Tuscany) specimens and similar to the Pirro Nord (Apulia) fossil. The manus is robust, the first phalanges are quite long in comparison to the metacarpals. The Early Pleistocene European M. whitei represents an African element that took part in the faunal dispersal from Africa to Europe that occurred at the Plio-Pleistocene transition. The larger mammal fossils have been found mainly in a restricted area in the southern pan of the North Sea notably the Deep Water Channel and the Brown Bank. The list of mammal species are divided into two main groups: a group which Itve in a marine envi- ronment and a group of terrestrial mammals. The terrestrial mammals from the North Sea are di- vided in four fauna-associations which are regarded as groups of larger mammals with a compar- able age although not necessarily regarded as contemporaneous. Heavily mineralized mammalian remains are referred to fauna-associations I and II. Fauna-association I, with Anancus arvernensis and Mammuthus meridionalis, of Early or Middle Villafranchian age is correlated with the Tigliart. INTRODUCTION The taxonomic relationship of fossil endemic mammals on Mediterranean islands with their continental counterparts is a question debated by paleontologists since the last two cen- turies. Among large mammals, hippos inhabited western and eastern Mediterranean islands during Pleistocene times. Apart the size - being the endemites smaller - numerous morpho- logical characters distinguish the island inhabitants from their continental forerunners. The Sicilian hippo has been firstly informally described by Pentland (1832) who consid- ered the taxon peculiar for Sicily similar to the living hippo (Hippopotamus amphibius) but of reduced size and demanded a formal attribution. In the same year the Sicilian hippo received its formal name Hippopotamus pentlandi von Meyer 1832. Moreover in Malta was found a smaller taxon named Hippopotamus minutus Blainville 1847 nowadays considered synony- mous pro parte of Hippopotamus melitensis Major 1902. Falconer (1868) and Woodward (1886) considered the smaller Maltese form different from the Sicilian one and attributed all the Maltese taxa to H. minutus and the Sicilian ones to H.

Greece) and intercalated between lignite Seam II and III yielded a collection of small vertebrate remains. The assemblage includes fish and small mammals; the mammal assemblage encompasses a variety of species, dominated by voles (arvicolids) of the genera Arvicola and Microtus. Other rodents are represented by a dipod cf. Alactaga and a murid of the genus Apodemus. In addition, there is a number of insectivore remains that refer to the family Soricidae, and more specifically to the genus Crocidura. The unrooted Arvicola molars show a positive‘Mimomys’ enamel differentiation with a mean SDQ value of 122, indicating a late Middle Pleistocene age (ca. 400 ka.)

Rome is the largest municipality in Europe, with an inhabited surface area only slightly smaller than that of Greater London and almost double that of the inner Paris suburbs (the Petite Couronne). e spatial distribution of buildings within the municipality is distinctive. Unbuilt areas comprise 73 percent of the territory. ese voids are oen farmland (paradoxically, Rome is the largest rural municipality in Italy) or areas with high environmental, historic or cultural value. Fiumicino, previously part of the municipality of Rome, became an independent municipality in 1991. Its autonomy, made all the more signicant because Fiumicino hosts the international airport, marked the start of an extensive process of economic deconcentration along the route connecting Rome to the airport. In Italy’s case, the implementation of the UrbanSIM model posed several challenges, notably the availability, homogeneity and completeness of data. is paper uses four specic cases (land use, travel times, accessibility, and residential land values) to propose a general methodology to solve problems related to missing or non-homogeneous data. For the land use, we simply combine two different land use data sources, while for accessibility and travel time data, we propose the use of geostatistical methods in order to estimate missing and unavailable data, calculating also the accuracy of the predictions.
