This week we are going to look at different types of music that have become popular from 1990- 2020. Over time more and more different styles of music have emerged and many of these split into subgenres. Here are some of them:

Pop - Britpop

• Started in the . • Britpop bands were inspired by some of the great British bands of the 1960s including the Beatles, and . • Britpop bands used traditional pop instruments, usually based on 1-2 lead guitars, bass guitar, drum kit and a vocalist. • It had elements of , and rock. • Key Britpop bands include Pulp, Blur, Oasis and Suede.

•Very popular in the 1990s but less popular now. •Tended to focus on singing (rather than playing instruments). •British and Irish groups included , , Take That, , etc. •The songs ranged from ballads to dance numbers. •Songs were often about love.

Ballad A song that tells a story. Often slow and emotional. Club

Here are the main types of club dance styles that have been used since 1990: Techno Fast, hard beat, usually 130-150bpm. Few or no vocals. Little or no chord movement. Sounds mechanical and electronic. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UaN5V2nwyxc

Jungle Fast tempo, often around 170bpm. Drum-based. Short fast notes called break beats play between the main beats which can sound militaristic. Very repetitive bass line. Lots of drum machine sounds. Off-beat hi-hat patterns. Looped samples. Synthesizer riffs. Club Dance Music Here are the main types of club dance styles that have been used since 1990:

Trance Around 120-150 bpm. Very repetitive sound. Uses electronic sounds and lots of effects. Builds ups layers gradually. Slow chord changes over a fast beat. Meant to make you feel like you’re in a trance. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2r3gJ50h0ko
