While alterations are not planned, if any changes are made to this document they will be clearly announced at the beginning of class periods. II. Course Description The purpose of this course is to provide a context for better understanding the relationship between filmed programs and disaster management. The course begins with the suggestion that filmed programs are an important factor in contributing to society’s perception and understanding of both emergency management and disasters themselves. As film and mass media are ubiquitous in today’s world, it can be argued that much of the basis for understanding contemporary societal issues is provided by some form of filmed programs.

  • Documenting the Director: Delbert Mann, His Life, His Work, and His Papers
http://spider.georgetowncollege.edu/htallant/border/bs10/fr-harw.htm Border States: Journal of the Kentucky-Tennessee American Studies Association, No. 10 (1995) DOCUMENTING THE DIRECTOR: DELBERT MANN, HIS LIFE, HIS WORK, AND HIS PAPERS Sarah Harwell Vanderbilt University Library The Papers of Delbert Mann at the Special Collections Library of Vanderbilt University provide not only a rich chronicle of the award-winning television and motion picture director's life and work, but also document the history of aspects of American popular culture and motion picture art in the latter half of the twentieth century. Delbert Mann was born in Lawrence, Kansas, in 1920. He moved to Nashville, which he considers his home town, as a young boy when his father came to teach at Scarritt College. He graduated from Hume-Fogg High School and Vanderbilt University, where Dinah Shore and Mann's future wife, Ann Caroline Gillespie, were among his classmates. Also in Nashville he developed a lifelong friendship with Fred Coe through their mutual involvement in the Nashville Community Playhouse. Coe would play a very important role in Mann's life. A few months after his graduation from Vanderbilt in 1941, Mann joined the Eighth Air Force, for which he completed thirty-five missions as a pilot of a B-24 bomber. After the end of the Second World War he attended the Yale Drama School, followed by two years as director of the Town Theatre of Columbia, South Carolina. In 1949, Fred Coe, already a producer at NBC television network, invited Delbert Mann to come to New York to direct live television drama on the "Philco Television Playhouse." Then in its infancy, television offered many fine original plays to its relatively small viewing audience.

  • A Tribute to Ernest Borgnine by Jarrod Emerson
Rise Of The Everyman A Tribute to Ernest Borgnine by Jarrod Emerson SPECIAL FOR FILMS FOR TWO® Ernest Borgnine with the Oscar he won for Marty. Photo Credit: John McCoy/ZUMA Press/Newscom (1/21/11) In the 1995 comedy sequel Grumpier Old Men, “Jacob Goldman” (Kevin Pollack) mentions the name of an “available” woman to his lonely widower father “Max” (Walter Matthau). Upon hearing the woman’s name Max balks, replying, “She looks like Ernest Borgnine!” Having been born in the mid-1980’s I had no idea who Matthau’s character was referring to, but that would soon change. As my interest in cinema progressed, I began to notice the late actor popping up here and there. Eventually, two things occurred to me. Firstly, I am in complete agreement in that I wouldn’t be keen to date a woman who resembled Ernest Borgnine. Secondly, for anyone to remember Ernest Borgnine as “that homely actor” simply does not do him justice. He was one of Hollywood’s greatest – and long-lived – character actors, staying busy in film and television, right up to his death from heart failure last July at the age of 95. Perhaps best remembered as “McHale” from the beloved sitcom McHale’s Navy, that role was but the tip of the iceberg in terms of Borgnine’s capabilities. Over the course of six decades, Borgnine forged a richly diverse film career as he collaborated with multiple generations of talented filmmakers. His Academy Award for the heartwarming 1955 film Marty helped pave the way for future generations of immensely talented character actors.

Take That, Tyson: 'Raging Bull' LaMotta Brings 'Lady and the Champ' Back to the Stage - NYTimes.com JULY 6, 2012, 9:21 AM Take That, Tyson: ‘Raging Bull’ LaMotta Brings ‘Lady and the Champ’ Back to the Stage By DAVE ITZKOFF It might not be advisable for Jake LaMotta to take on Mike Tyson in the ring, but he can still go head-to- head with him in the arena of New York theater. Just before Iron Mike arrives on Broadway with his one-man show, Mr. LaMotta, a former middleweight champion whose life inspired the film "Raging Bull," is bringing back his show "Lady and the Champ" for a two-week run at the Richmond Shepard Theater in Manhattan, press representatives for the production said. Mr. LaMotta, who turns 91 on Tuesday, will star in "Lady and the Champ" with Denise Baker, who wrote the show with Bonnie Lee Sander and directed it for the stage. A news release describes the production (which has previously run at the Triad Theatre and Feinstein's at the Loews Regency) as "an evening of stories, videos, and song and dance" in which Mr. LaMotta recounts "in ribald detail" his boxing career and the years that followed, during which he ran various bars, worked as a stand-up comic and was married numerous times. (The news release says Mr. LaMotta "affectionately refers" to Ms. Baker "as his future seventh wife, 'Lucky #7.' ") Mr. LaMotta is also the author of the memoir "Raging Bull," which was adapted into Martin Scorsese's Academy Award-winning film starring Robert De Niro.
