These rhetorical elements of the job are not prescribed in the Constitution and as a result it is the presidents themselves who help shape the cultural understanding of presidentiality, of what it means to be president. When President Barack Obama participated in a “Slow Jam the News” comedy sketch on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon in 2012, he took the rhetorical presidency to a place it had never been before. -

But, for the sake of keeping this digitally coherent, here are some connections I could make: A) Loud > Librarian > Art Museum B) Quiet > Actor > Grocery Store C) Scared > Mechanic > Truck Stop And so on… Then you look at your connections and you try to think of some situation that those make sense. Or you go the complete opposite and connect ones that are total rubbish to put together. For example, what if a librarian, who is forced to stay quiet in her natural environment (the library) made up for it by being loud everywhere else? Next, you would brainstorm that scenario. -

The Queer “Third Species”: Tragicomedy in Contemporary LGBTQ American Literature and Television A dissertation submitted to the Graduate School of the University of Cincinnati in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department English and Comparative Literature of the College of Arts and Sciences by Lindsey Kurz, B.A., M.A. March 2018 Committee Chair: Dr. Beth Ash Committee Members: Dr. Lisa Hogeland, Dr. Deborah Meem Abstract This dissertation focuses on the recent popularity of the tragicomedy as a genre for representing queer lives in late-twentieth and twenty-first century America. I argue that the tragicomedy allows for a nuanced portrayal of queer identity because it recognizes the systemic and personal “tragedies” faced by LGBTQ people (discrimination, inadequate legal protection, familial exile, the AIDS epidemic, et cetera), but also acknowledges that even in struggle, in real life and in art, there is humor and comedy. I contend that the contemporary tragicomedy works to depart from the dominant late-nineteenth and twentieth-century trope of queer people as either tragic figures (sick, suicidal, self-loathing) or comedic relief characters by showing complex characters that experience both tragedy and comedy and are themselves both serious and humorous. Building off Verna A. Foster’s 2004 book The Name and Nature of Tragicomedy, I argue that contemporary examples of the tragicomedy share generic characteristics with tragicomedies from previous eras (most notably the Renaissance and modern period), but have also evolved in important ways to work for queer authors. The contemporary tragicomedy, as used by queer authors, mixes comedy and tragedy throughout the text but ultimately ends in “comedy” (meaning the characters survive the tragedies in the text and are optimistic for the future). -

The misleading idea has surely risen because of the main source of the comic fragments: Athenaeus, The Learned Banqueters. However, the contemporary and political aspect emerges again in the 4th c. BC in the creations of a small group of dramatists, among whom Timocles, Mnesimachus and Heniochus stand out (significantly, most of them are concentrated in the time of the Macedonian expansion). Firstly Timocles, in whose fragments the personal mockery, the onomasti komodein, is still present and sharp, often against contemporary political leaders (cf. frr. 17, 19, 27 K.–A.). Then, Mnesimachus (Φίλιππος, frr. 7–10 K.–A.) and Heniochus (fr. 5 K.–A.), who show an anti- and a pro-Macedonian attitude, respec- tively. The present paper analyses the use of the political and contemporary element in Middle Comedy and the main differences between the poets named and Aristophanes, trying to sketch the evolution of the genre, the points of contact and the new tendencies. As a stand-up comedian his material spans from a PG-13 to an R rating, with subjects that consist of growing up on the South Side of Chicago, the different types of comedians and the often requested crowd favorite that basketball star Shaquille O’Neal should retire from NBA and go back to his career as a rap artist. He his performed at a variety of clubs such as The World Famous Comedy Store (Hollywood), The Laugh Factory (Hollywood), The Improv (West Palm Beach) and Pechanga Comedy Club (Temecula) just to name a few and have been privileged to share the stage with comedy greats such as Damon Waynes, Chris Tucker and Robin Williams. His uniqueness as a comedic actor has given him the opportunity and distinction of being the only comic to perform on Playboy TV (Canoga Park and Totally Busted) AND Nickelodeon (Victorious) along with other T.V. and Movies projects. Such as Paramount Pictures “Save the Last Dance”, Groit Pictures “Redrum”, adding his voice to the Animation “Gangs of LA 1991_ and the award winning comedy from Jib Jab’s Shawshank in Minute, directed by John Landis. A gifted comedic writer, He has written numerous sketch comedy scenes of OBN and has written many spec productions with QRS Productions. -

As a special carrier of humor, sitcom, which is a type of comedy performance, has attracted millions of audiences with humorous utterances all over the world. The American sitcom The Big Bang Theory has been one of the most popular American sitcoms in China within these years which largely count on verbal humor to create general humorous effect. Based on the achievements made by previous researchers, the present study explores the verbal humor in the American sitcom The Big Bang Theory in the light of a new model—Adaptation-Relevance model so as to reveal its interpretive power of humor and its feasibility in analyzing verbal humor in the sitcom The Big Bang Theory. The paper mainly adopts the qualitative and descriptive methods to analyze the selected examples and finally comes to a conclusion that this Adaptation-Relevance model which is an integration of two powerful pragmatic theories holds the interpretive power for verbal humor and has feasibility in analyzing verbal humor by using the data in sitcom The Big Bang Theory. -

All were directed and written by Caty Borum Chattoo, produced under the auspices of the Center for Media & Social Impact at American University’s School of Communication. All three projects were funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The first project, Entertainment, Storytelling & Social Change in Global Poverty, an experimental design study that examined the persuasive impact of the comedic documentary film, Stand Up Planet, was published in February 2015; it was funded under the auspices of Learning for Action, LLC. Borum Chattoo was also the executive producer and producer of the documentary, which premiered in 2014 in the United States and India. Lauren Feldman, PhD, Associate Professor in the School of Communication and Information at Rut- gers University, served as peer reviewer for The Laughter Effect.
