Elevenlarch- and pine-feeding populations of the larch budmoth were studied in Western Europe using 24 allozyme loci. Hierarchical F-statistics between larch and pine forms (FSTO.O65) were much greater than those between localities within larch (FSTO.0O2) and within pine (FST 0.026), even when sympatric host-associated populations were considered. Analysis of Nei's genetic distance produced similar results, and a UPGMA tree of all populations consistently clustered samples from the same hosts together. Three loci, autosomal Pgm and Mdh-s and sex-linked Idh-s, were the most important loci involved in differences between the two forms. Previously considered to be conspecific, it is now clear that the larch and pine biotypes of Z. diniana are either host races (sensu Diehi & Bush, 1984) or good sympatric species which hybridize rarely. Regardless of taxonomic status, the distribution of larch and pine in the Pleistocene, phenological differences between the two hosts, together with the great vagility of Z. diniana, an outbreak pest, suggest that sympatric or parapatric differentiation is at least as likely as allopatric divergence. The survey came about following a request from Tai Po Environmental Association. Recording, using ultraviolet light sources and live traps in four sub-sites, took place on the evenings of 24 April and 16 October 2009. In total, 825 moths representing 352 species were recorded. Of the species recorded, 3 meet IUCN Red List criteria for threatened species in one of the three main categories “Critically Endangered” (one species), “Endangered” (one species) and “Vulnerable” (one species” and a further 13 species meet “Near Threatened” criteria. Twelve of the species recorded are currently only known from Hong Kong, all are within one of the four IUCN threatened or near threatened categories listed. Seven species are recorded from Hong Kong for the first time. The moth assemblages recorded are typical of human disturbed forest, feng shui woods and orchards, with a relatively low Geometridae component, and includes a small number of species normally associated with agriculture and open habitats that were found in the SSSI site. Comparisons showed that each sub-site had a substantially different assemblage of species, thus the site as a whole should retain the mosaic of micro-habitats in order to maintain the high moth species richness observed.

This paper describes differences in canopy arthropod community structure and herbivory between old-growth and regenerating coniferous forests at the H. 3. Andrews Experimental Forest in western Oregon. Species diversity and functional diversity were much higher in canopies of old-growth trees compared with those of young trees. Aphid bio- mass in young stands was elevated an order of magnitude over biomass in old-growth stands. This study indicated a shift in the defoliator/sap-sucker ratio resulting from forest conversion, as have earlier studies at Coweeta Hydrologic Laboratory, North Carolina. These data indicated that the taxonomically distinct western coniferous and eastern deciduous forests show similar trends in functional organization of their canopy arthropod communities. No approach is unanimously accepted (Ruesink 1976; Getz and Gutierrez 1982). One alternative to this seemingly unresolv­ able dispute is to analyze past experience in order to learn from it. A fair assessment of any scientific approach would be to compare its achievements with its initial objectives as defined by the scientists directly involved. In this context forest-insect systems are of particular interest because they repre­ sent relatively natural ecosystems. Since forest pest insects cause often damages of high economical concern, several have been studied on a long-term basis. Particularly challenging to ecology is the class ofecosystem with cyclic populations. They pose a challenge because the simplicity of their dynamics ought to allow for pre­ dictions about the temporal behavior of the cyclic population with relative ease. How­ ever, until the present, except for the most trivial extrapolations based 'on the perio­ dicity of the phenomenon, we are not able to predict accurately population numbers for any well-defined set of environmental factors. Ifit should turn out that no predic­ tions can be made, ecology as a scientific discipline would be at stake. The main problem is that ofpopulation regulation. Today we have a set of compet­ ing hypotheses: natural enemies, host organisms, or self-regulation are proposed as main regulating mechanisms. Its taxonomic history is a classic example of the confusion that results from a lack of clarity regarding generic concepts (Gilligan & Wright 2013, Gilligan et al. 2013). Here we present, in the form of a revised catalogue, the taxonomic implications of a phylogenetic analysis of the group by Gilligan et al. (2013). That study produced revised definitions of Eucosma and Pelochrista based on female genital morphology, concluded that nearly all North American Phaneta belong in the redefined Eucosma, and described Eucopina as a new genus of Pinaceae-feeding species that previously had been placed in Eucosma.

H. Zhang & H. H. Li Abstract A total of 231 valid species in 34 genera of Eucosmini (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) are included in this catalo- gue. One new synonym, Zeiraphera hohuanshana Kawabe, 1986 syn. n. = Zeiraphera thymelopa (Meyrick, 1936) is established. 28 species are firstly recorded for China. Catálogo de los Eucosmini de China (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) Resumen Se incluyen en este Catálogo un total de 233 especies válidas en 34 géneros de Eucosmini (Lepidoptera: Tor- tricidae).   • Tarset and Greystead Biological Records
    Tarset and Greystead Biological Records published by the Tarset Archive Group 2015 Foreword Tarset Archive Group is delighted to be able to present this consolidation of biological records held, for easy reference by anyone interested in our part of Northumberland. It is a parallel publication to the Archaeological and Historical Sites Atlas we first published in 2006, and the more recent Gazeteer which both augments the Atlas and catalogues each site in greater detail. Both sets of data are also being mapped onto GIS. We would like to thank everyone who has helped with and supported this project - in particular Neville Geddes, Planning and Environment manager, North England Forestry Commission, for his invaluable advice and generous guidance with the GIS mapping, as well as for giving us information about the archaeological sites in the forested areas for our Atlas revisions; Northumberland National Park and Tarset 2050 CIC for their all-important funding support, and of course Bill Burlton, who after years of sharing his expertise on our wildflower and tree projects and validating our work, agreed to take this commission and pull everything together, obtaining the use of ERIC’s data from which to select the records relevant to Tarset and Greystead. Even as we write we are aware that new records are being collected and sites confirmed, and that it is in the nature of these publications that they are out of date by the time you read them. But there is also value in taking snapshots of what is known at a particular point in time, without which we have no way of measuring change or recognising the hugely rich biodiversity of where we are fortunate enough to live.

Box 960, Comer Brook, Newfoundland, Canada A2H 653 Abstract The Canadian Entomologist 131: 465 - 474 (1999) A survey of larval and pupal populations of the spruce bud moth, Zeiraphera canadensis Mutuura and Freeman (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), conducted from 1994 to 1996 in eastern Newfoundland, disclosed that the incidence of endemic parasit- ism by Hymenoptera was up to 50% for Tycherus osculator (Thiinberg) (Ichneu- monidae), up to 15% for Earinus zeirapherae (Walley), under 3% for Ascogaster (Wesmael 1835) sp. and Clinocentrus (Haliday 1833) sp. (Braconidae), and under 1% for Lamachus (Foerster 1868) sp. and Triclistus (Foerster 1868) sp. (Ichneu- monidae). Tycherus osculator, E. zeirapherae, Ascogaster sp., and Clinocentrus sp. represent new distributional range extensions to Newfoundland, and to the nearctic region in the case of Z osculator. The biology of European populations of Z osculator was studied on a natural host, Zeiraphera diniana (GuenCe). Only fe- males overwintered and ovarian maturation did not occur until after several months of exposure to near-freezing temperatures. Tycherus osculator successfully parasit- ized prepupae and pupae of Z. diniana of all ages but, in the laboratory, appeared to prefer pupae. Host feeding by Z osculator was common but not necessary for ovar- ian maturation. Tycherus osculator imported from Europe attacked and successfully developed within the spruce bud moth host in laboratory screenings. Morphological comparisons indicated that Z osculator reared from Z. canadensis were smaller than those reared from Z.
