    We went to an amusement park, my family and I. We rode on rides so scary I expected I would die. We rode a roller-coaster called The Homicidal Comet. It had so many loop-de-loops it nearly made us vomit. We rode The Crazed Tornado and it jerked us hard and quick. If it was any longer we would certainly be sick. We rode The Psycho Octopus, which packed a nasty punch. I think we’re pretty lucky that we didn’t lose our lunch. Title: Always Talk to Strangers Abstract approved: Redacted for Privacy Marjorie Sandor Always Talk to Strangers contains the first seven chapters to a novel. The novel focuses on the friendship between Amanda and Maria, two fourteen-year-old girls who are experiencing their last summer before high school in Madison, Wisconsin. Their friendship is a complicated one: Maria was kidnapped four years ago, the same sunmier that Amanda's father abandoned Amanda and her mother. These best friends must deal with various forms of loss: the loss of sexual innocence, the loss or "reinterpretation" of traditional father figures, the loss of believing in that ever elusive "happily ever after." The relationships in Always Talk to Strangers often grow and transform through subtle psychic undercurrents. Many thoughts and feelings of sadness, hope, and betrayal travel between the characters not through words but through body language and the innate understanding that we all carry our pasts with us. Our pasts, indeed, haunt us like ghosts: Amanda and Maria don't often verbally discuss the kidnapping or Amanda's father; Amanda and her mother don't discuss theman they've both lost, or their respective problems with marijuana and alcohol abuse; Amanda's mother and grandmother don't discuss their different religious and spiritual belief systems. Always Talk to Strangers is, in the end, a coming-of-age novel that shows us we are all composed of contradicting emotions and desires.

Every May, Canobie sponsors a PHYSICS DAY for high school students. This educational experience is designed for older students who test and apply scientific theories on our major thrill rides. The INTERACTIVE CLASSROOM is also a day dedicated to teaching how principles of science are applied to amusement park rides. This day is geared towards the middle school grades. Both days feature demonstrations and exhibits in addition to the lessons learned on the rides. Still, requests for additional learning guides beyond those previously produced continued. It is to this need that Canobie Lake Park Corporation proudly responds with “ELEMENTS OF FUN!” Your comments are welcomed, since this program’s raison d’être is the educational enrichment of your students. Understanding teachers’ need for a formal focus, and using the same to create examples, activities, extensions, problems and enrichment samples, educators from around New England have listed in general terms both the desired learnings and minimum essentials for this curriculum as an appendix to this document.
